He had gone out to the Jordan and accepted at the hands of John the rite of baptism, thus indorsing the work of one whom he afterwards declared to be not less than the greatest of all the old-time prophets. After John was put to death, by the order of Herod, Jesus takes up his work, and re-echoes his proclamation, "The kingdom of God is at hand; the kingdom is coming, it is near. Prepare for it, repent, and be ready." It is worth our while to note just here, at the outset, that there have always been in the world two different classes of minds, people with diametrically opposite ways of looking at human society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Man of Nazareth IN writing this book, I have had the ordinarily intelligent man constantly in mind, and have tried to answer some of the questions about Jesus, which have often arisen in his thinking but have rarely passed his lips. But While writ ing for the people, I have never forgotten the experts, a fact which they will quickly perceive, if they will do me the honor to penetrate to the core of the volume. I have tried to observe the rules of the critical game, have practically used only the first three gospels, and, even in them, have clearly differentiated the sources. I am ready to defend my position in the scholarly arena. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. His tools were simple and few, and the wood he had to work with was poor, so that he could not do the fine work carpenters do nowadays. His name was Joseph, and he was quite poor. But he married a girl named Mary, and lived humbly and contentedly in his little house in Nazareth. Mary would do the simple housework and would spin flax or grind barley, while Joseph worked busily with his tools, and so they got along quite nicely. One day Mary was made very happy by God whispering in her heart that she should very soon have a little child. That was good news to Mary, and, as she thought about it, she determined that she would name her baby "Jesus." Now, some time after Mary had learned this good news, Joseph came home one day and said they should have to go to Bethlehem, another town, on some matter of business. So he saddled his patient little donkey, and put Mary on its back, and took his staff, and set out for Bethlehem. But when they reached Bethlehem, he found that there was no room for them in any house or at the inn. So he went into a little stable of the inn, where the cattle lived, and he and Mary lay down in the sweet hay to sleep. That very night, as they lay sleeping on the hay in the stable, the little baby was born. The good news had at last come true, and Mary was very happy indeed. She laid her little baby-boy in a manger, a trough out of which the animals ate their hay and grain, which made a very cosy crib for him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prophet of Nazareth This volume is not the manifesto of a school, a sect, or a party. The author acknowledges with gratitude the helpful suggestions and inspiring influence of every great thinker and every faithful worker with whom he has come in contact. But he has endeavored, so far as possible, to see with his own eyes the character of each important problem, and to present in his own language, simply and unequivocally, the conclusions to which many years of study and reflection have led him. In attempting to make a comprehensive statement within narrow limits of space, he has often been obliged to give the bare results where it would have been a pleasure to outline the course of protracted investigation. More frequently, a few suggestions of decisive facts will convince the reader familiar with the problems that nothing has been taken for granted without fresh examination. Wherever it seemed necessary to indicate carefully the grounds for a view not yet fully understood or generally adopted, the author has had no hesitancy in doing so at sufficient length. Particularly is this the case with the question as to the origin and significance of the term "son of man." As the author was the first to suggest that Jesus never used this term concerning himself, either to claim Messiahship in any sense, or to hint that he was "a mere man," or "the true man," but in some pregnant utterances used it in reference to "man" in general, his duties, rights, and privileges, he has felt it incumbent upon himself to attempt such a re-interpretation of the life and teaching of Jesus in the light of this conviction as has been urgently and rightly demanded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Living Jesus: The Words of Jesus of Nazareth It would seem to be unfortunate that the reader does not have the advantage that the hearers had, of coming to know the personality before being confronted with the announce ment of his identity. For two and a half months did the Great Teacher speak and min ister before he told who he was. He purposely refrained from that announcement, as he said, that he might make himself known before mak ing known his name. The reader will not be so prepared; yet he will not fail to find, if he reads with an open mind, that during his read-1 ing the truth is attested to by his own inner consciousness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sayings of Jesus of Nazareth Book on the Sayings of Jesus is no new thing. The great words are the world's most precious possession. However often we traverse them, there is always a wide hinterland of unexplored meaning, where the seekers in the land of thought never tire of wandering. Men have often desired to have them, free from their environment in the Gospels, so that they might be allowed to make their own unimpeded impression. And the desire has frequently been gratified in print. A new attempt must therefore not go out into the world of books without making some effort to justify its own special existence. The earliest compilation of Sayings of Jesus is that now known as the Logia. It comes in all probability from the hand of the disciple Matthew. It is not this journal of Matthew's which is the subject of the present book but all the extant words which fell from the Master's lips, as they are recorded in the New Testament, and in the extra-canonical writings, so far as they can be judged to be genuine words of the Lord. Although his sympathy for those despised by ortho doxy led him to admit pagans into the kingdom of God although he had resided more than once in a pagan country, and once or twice we surprise him in friendly relations with unbelievers it may be said that his life was passed entirely in the very restricted world in which he was born. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus, the Carpenter of Nazareth This life is written in short realistic pictures, endeavouring to avoid theology and sectarianism, that mothers of all creeds may read it to their children, and that children in later life may read it for themselves. Two points are dwelt on, which are common to all the Churches - the beauty of the Life of Jesus, and the personal contact of the Spirit, - beyond that, lie the dividing walls of creeds and dogmas. Amid the present day questioning of beliefs, writings, and authorities, and the ever broadening of common charity, it is well that our children should begin with Christianity as Jesus left it, that they may be enabled to judge for themselves how much of the sectarian structures of the succeeding ages they need regard as essential to religion, and how much as only optional. A cathedral is a good place to worship in, but some prefer the open field. A simpler Christianity is urgently wanted.
