Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autobiography is reflective of the many dimensional attitudes of the author, Dato’ Jeyaraj C. Rajarao. As he recounts his life story it is evident that he has lived a life with passion, integrity, wit and mischief. A life of black and white, with very little grey in it. The narrative begins with a simple story of love that spans decades. It then takes the reader through a young boy’s experience of the Japanese occupation of Malaya until she gains independence. It is obvious that the political, social and economic situation of the period influenced Rajarao as a young boy and helped form his ideologies. Rajarao is hard-hitting and critical when he conveys his opinions about the activities of the Prime Minister, and his cohorts, that caused Malaysia to be regarded as the worst kleptocratic country in the world. However, the reader becomes aware of how much Rajarao loves and despairs for Malaysia as he shares how she is being torn apart by race and religion-based policies. No doubt, there is much that can be regarded as controversial or confrontational but that is inevitable when truth is told. The book is intensely personal and immensely interesting. He is brutally honest as he admits his mistakes and apologizes. This book is recommended reading for the young and the old, as it is both a history book as well as an autobiography. It is dribbled with sharp observations on life, and draws the reader into a different era, yet it also educates them and recommends a purpose driven life. The Odyssey is certainly most thought-provoking, enlightening and stimulating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time riddled with war, Philip A. G. Kelly was one of the brightest pupils in the Infants School in Essex. Everything changed when drastic surgery led to deafness, but Philip didn’t let that deter him, developing his love for aviation into a talent for aircraft recognition.Remaining in civilian life whilst his three close brothers were accepted into the Armed Forces, Philip started gardening, then moved up to electronic process work and later fine grinding. After working in three districts of Essex, Philip gained forklift truck driving and gardening experience in Lancashire. Later on, he was in charge of the petroleum store. My Odyssey is Philip’s tale of life, narrating all the twists and turns he encountered along the way through his working life and stays in hospital for surgery. Experiencing a long-lasting concussion gave him a special insight into the effects of brain injury which added to his spiritual life and understanding of the Bible. He expresses his affinity with Jesus Christ who he believes visited his hospital bedside, teaching him lessons he could not have learned in any other way.Philip is inspired by the Holy Bible itself, as well as R.G. LeTourneau’s Mover of Men and Mountains and Five Miles From Bunkum by Christopher Ketteridge and Spike Mays.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Rathbones Folio Prize • Winner of the 2021 Kate O'Brien Award • Winner of the 2021 Dalkey Emerging Writer Award Sinéad Hynes is a tough, driven, funny young property developer with a terrifying secret. No-one knows it: not her fellow patients in a failing hospital, and certainly not her family. She has confided only in Google and a shiny magpie. But she can't go on like this, tirelessly trying to outstrip her past and in mortal fear of her future. Across the ward, Margaret Rose is running her chaotic family from her rose-gold Nokia. In the neighbouring bed, Jane, rarely but piercingly lucid, is searching for a decent bra and for someone to listen. And Sinéad needs them both. As You Were is about intimate histories, institutional failures, the kindness of strangers, and the darkly present past of modern Ireland; about women's stories and women's struggles; about seizing the moment to be free. Wildly funny, desperately tragic, inventive and irrepressible, As You Were introduces a brilliant voice in Irish fiction with a book that is absolutely of our times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first six chapters of this book are autobiographical. The first chapter describes a tragedy that occurred to the family of the author when he was fifteen years old. In the subsequent chapters, he describes his roots, early childhood, experiences during the World War II, and how he started a career in medicine at a very young age. In the seventh chapter, he poignantly describes how he met his future partner for life. For the rest of the book, he describes the journey they took together, starting with their training at the Philippine General Hospital in Manila where they met, their five-year participation in the US State Department Exchange Visitor Program for further training, and their return to their homeland with an intent to serve the country of their birth. Finding themselves to seem like foreigners in their home country, they decided to return to America, where they were able to achieve a level of success in life that they never thought possible, even in their wildest dreams. The author, encouraged and supported by his loving wife, went on to become a leading advocate of intraocular lens implantation during cataract operations in Massachusetts, despite vigorous opposition from leading Boston ophthalmologists. His reputation as a young ophthalmologist at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston led to his recruitment to practice his specialty in a small rural city, Greenfield, Massachusetts, where he was given a much-coveted deferment from serving in Vietnam. While achieving prominence in ophthalmological circles in Massachusetts, he never forgot his home country. He periodically visited his old alma mater to share his knowledge and experience with his younger colleagues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this delightful book, historian Charles P. Roland chronicles his life from boyhood in 1920s rural Tennessee to retirement after a distinguished fifty-year academic career. Modestly and with understated humor, this prominent scholar of southern and Civil War history turns his perceptive eye to his own past, mixing personal recollections with incisive social commentary to provide fascinating details about growing up in the South during the Great Depression, soldiering in World War II, and teaching college history in the turbulent second half of the twentieth century. By turns charming, gripping, and tragic, Roland’s memoir is a testament to the extraordinary events of the seemingly ordinary life. The son and grandson of educators, Roland graduated from Vanderbilt University at age twenty and spent his early working years as a teacher and National Park Service historian in Washington, D.C. Like most members of the “greatest generation,” he saw his world change abruptly on December 7, 1941, with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He served as a captain in a front-line infantry battalion in Europe, fought in the most crucial sector in the Battle of the Bulge, and earned a Purple Heart fighting in the Remagen Bridgehead. The author describes his many close brushes with death, the loss in battle of numerous cherished friends, the massive destruction of major German cities, and his postwar depression. Blending his own observations with current scholarship, he draws a striking comparison between World War II and the American Civil War. Using the GI Bill, Roland earned his doctorate in history at Louisiana State University and spent time with some of the most recognizable names in the historical profession, including Bell Irvin Wiley, T. Harry Williams, and Francis Butler Simkins. He returned to the military as assistant to the chief historian of the army during the Korean War before pursuing an academic career in earnest. Roland taught history for eighteen years at Tulane University and for another eighteen at the University of Kentucky, at the same time immersing himself in research and writing numerous books and journal articles. He officially retired in 1988 at the age of seventy but continues to be an active scholar, author, editor, and lecturer. A succinct and satisfying epic of the life of a thoughtful citizen-soldier and scholar, My Odyssey through History is also a valuable remembrance of major twentieth-century events.

Book excerpt: In 1944, when Communism devastated Eastern Europe, it uprooted millions, setting the new "Displaced Persons" adrift, most often to a tragic fate. By unusual luck, young Stephane Groueff, a Bulgarian, landed on more hospitable shores. Spared from the destruction of his family and home after a happy, privileged childhood in a small Balkan kingdom, his eventful Odyssey threw him into the fascinating life of a "Paris-Match" foreign correspondent, led him to romantic experiences lived against the backdrop of Montmartre nightclubs, Egyptian pyramids, opulent Irish castles or Alpine ski resorts and involved him in anti-Communist exile activities. The reader of his candid narrative finds the budding historian of the Manhattan Project at the side of general Groves, the maker of the atomic bomb, follows him as a chronicler of science research at oceanography expeditions in the Pacific, at the Mt.Palomar telescope or on the South Pole, and meets him again in Mexico and at the service of the Sultan of Oman. His reportages bring him to Cape Canaveral and Saigon, to refugee camps in Thailand, and glamorous Hollywood. The bittersweet tale abounds with celebrities, famous friends, and amusing anecdotes, but is also filled with incurable nostalgia and heartbreaking details of the author's family's sufferings. Unexpectedly, a miracle interrupts the "Displaced Person's" voyage: the Communist regime collapses and Groueff can finally return to his native land. The circle is completed. The red carpet awaits him, but 46 years had passed and most people he loved are no longer there to welcome him.

Book excerpt: In 1963, Michigan State University, the nation’s first land grant college, attracted a record number of National Merit Scholars by offering competitive scholarships. One of these exceptional students was Michael Kindman. After the beginning of the Free Speech Movement in Berkeley, Kindman, in line to be editor-in-chief of the official MSU student newspaper, felt compelled to seek a more radical forum of intellectual debate. In 1965, he dropped out of school and founded The Paper, one of the first five members of Underground Press Syndicate. This gripping autobiography follows Kindman’s inspiring journey of self-discovery, from MSU to Boston, where he joined the staff of Avatar, unaware that the large commune that controlled the paper was a charismatic cult. Five years later, he fled the commune’s outpost in Kansas and headed to San Francisco, where he came out as a gay man, changed his name to Mica, and continued his work as an activist and visionary.

They want to love their children well, but it can be overwhelming to navigate the murky waters of television, movies, games, and more that their kids are exposed to every day. Popular culture doesn’t have to be a burden. The Pop Culture Parent equips mothers, fathers, and guardians to build relationships with their children by entering into their popular culture–informed worlds, understanding them biblically, and passing on wisdom. This resource by authors Ted Turnau, E. Stephen Burnett, and Jared Moore, provides Scripture-based, practical help for parents to enjoy the messy gift of popular culture with their kids. By engaging with their children’s interests, parents can explore culture while teaching their children to become missionaries in a post-Christian world. By providing realistic yet biblical encouragement for parents, the coauthors guide readers to engage with popular culture through a gospel lens, helping them teach their kids to understand and answer the challenges raised by popular culture. The Pop Culture Parent helps the next generation of evangelicals move beyond a posture of cultural ignorance to one of cultural engagement, building grace-oriented disciples and cultural missionaries.

Book excerpt: In 2014, Dr. K. Radhakrishnan was named one of the top ten scientists in the world by Nature magazine—the first Indian scientist to be so honoured. Earlier that year, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully ran the Mars Orbiter Mission, popularly known as the ‘Mangalyaan’ mission. ISRO’s Moon Rover, scheduled for 2018, is also Radhakrishnan’s brainchild. Witness to the transformation of India’s space programme in the early 1980s, Radhakrishnan cut his teeth with the SLV-3 project, the country’s first satellite launch vehicle. He worked with stalwarts like Dr Vikram Sarabhai, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Prof. Satish Dhawan and Mr Y.S. Rajan, wearing several different hats during his illustrious and challenging career. Radhakrishnan eventually turned major setbacks into roaring successes by his unfailingly belief in human endeavour and a commitment to excellence. Packed with invaluable information and insights, this fascinating memoir takes us behind the scenes of India’s cutting-edge world of scientific achievement.

Book excerpt: My Odyssey: Stories, Poems, and Verse began simply with a high school classroom assignment to write a short story. Author Joseph Kennedy had no idea what to write; he was prepared to fail instantly. Ultimately, however, he succeededso much so that his short story was published in his high schools collection of writings for that year. Thus began his interest in writing as a way to chronicle his thoughts and ideas. This collection is organized chronologically, following the growth of his creative voice as it develops through his odyssey. His growth, change, and adaptation are both obvious and subtlefrom the sad Elegy to Mama Cass to the quiet elegance of a January thunderstorm in January Noon, his voice resonates with strength and vibrancy. Elegy to Mama Cass This morning I am mourning the death of Cass Elliot Who died choking on a ham sandwich, An Epicurean delight; she excelled in the art of eating. Now by her own hand, the maid, goodly stuffed, Lies still with a smile beamin As the cortege intones strains of California Dreamin. John, Michelle, Denny, all who earned a penny With her on Creeque Alley now wish her bon voyage And happiness to deaths rally.
