Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Naval War With France The spoliation of American commerce by the French, and the resulting hostilities during the last years of the eighteenth century, form the earliest episode of importance in our history under the Federal Constitution. It is, perhaps, natural that they should have been to a great extent overshadowed by the tremendous convulsions of the French Revolution. Yet these hostilities between the United States and France continued in an acute form nearly three years, and amounted to actual war, although war was declared on neither side. Important frigate actions and very many minor contests furnish some of the most stirring exploits in the early history of the navy. An examination of manuscript sources and contemporary newspapers has brought to light much material never before utilized. For aid in this search, the writer is indebted to the officials of the Navy Department, the Boston Public Library, and the Massachusetts Historical Society, and to many other persons. He is under especial obligations to Professor Edward Channing of Harvard University, and to Charles W. Stewart, Esq., Superintendent of Library and Naval War Records, Navy Department. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Next Naval War Though the announcement in the morning papers of March the 1st, 1895, that the French Ambassador had presented to our Minister of Foreign Affairs the afternoon previously a demand for an early evacuation of Egypt by our troops, came upon the country like a clap of thunder, it was soon evident that for some years France had been secretly but energetically preparing for war. The great irritation against England of recent years, due to our prolonged stay in Egypt, had been much increased by the Congo treaty and the gradual extension of our influence north of Uganda. There was no doubt a footing in Khartoum from the south would soon follow, and we should thus obtain a hold upon Egypt, compared with which our present position in its northern portion is unimportant. The bitter animosity against Germany now was diverted to ourselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Against all this we have next to nothing to set except the smart little action in the Heligoland Bight, which was forthwith heralded as a glorious victory. Of course we have captured many helpless German merchantmen, and seized some undefended or weakly defended German colonies, but there is nothing very glorious about that. Altogether, it is a sorry tale of inaction, disappointment, and frequent reverse.' To all these crabbed and cross-grained critics I would reply, 0 yo of little faith, how little you know of the things which belong to your peace! You betray an equal ignorance of naval history and of the nature of naval warfare. Do you think that a fleet, however powerful and confident, can engage the enemy if he will not give it the opportunity? Do you think that any nation can ever go to war without suffering occa sioual disappointments and partial reverses Do you not know that in the Great Revolutionary War, which began in 1793, it was more than a year before the first fleet action was fought by Lord Howe on the glorious first of June 1794 Do you forget that throughout that war, both before Trafalgar and after, British merchant-vessels were captured by the French in hundreds every year, scores of them being snapped up even in the Channel day by day, to the very end of the war? Do you not know that the Seven Years' War, the most successful that England ever fought, began with the loss of Minorca and the trial and death of Byng? The Navy has done nothing, forsooth Why, it has done everything, literally everything; for without it nothing could have been done that has been done) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Operations of the American Navy in France During the War With Germany Seen on a chart of the North Atlantic Ocean, that part of France lying west of a line drawn from Havre on the north, to Bordeaux on the south - from the mouth of the river Seine to the mouth of the river Gironde - juts forth into the' sea like the head and forearm. Of some gigantic beast, some incredibly huge bear. Audierne Bay, Douarnenez Bay, and the harbor of Brest form the mouth of this bear. It was into this maw, and into certain subsidiary orifices north and south, that troops and stores from America were poured for France. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Navy During the Rebellion, Vol. 1 With England and France, therefore, the most interesting question connected with our affairs has been, whether we could create a truly formidable Navy. Our naval strength was the standard by which they measured their power to attack, and ours to defend. They did not believe it possible for us to pro duce a Navy in a few months which could both seal up our long line of sea-coast and defy their own most formidable ships, and this mistaken judgment was the main influence in deciding their policy in regard to American affairs. A history of the Navy, then, is a history of that power by which Europe gauges our national importance, and by which our rank among nations is assigned: because, until a true Christian civilization prevails, the nobler attributes of a nation will be overlooked in view of its ability to carry on a great war; and because, if the 'united States should ever wage a great European war, the battles would be mainly upon the seas. While our Army has done a work beyond all praise, and has settled the question of our ability to defend our territory against any force which could be brought here, the Navy has saved us from foreign intervention that could not have been otherwise avoided, while at the same time its labors in putting down the rebellion have been far greater than has been gener ally supposed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Years of Naval Warfare A history of the naval war since 1914 is of a very far reaching character, but I have endeavoured to localise the many campaigns into separate chapters, although a small amount of overlapping is unavoidable. The stupendous events Of the last few years have followed one another in such rapid succession that few people realise the enormous task which our Navy was called upon to perform. From the terribly sudden collapse Of the whole fabric of Germany's commerce the success Of this work must be evident; and although in 1915 many of our ships were still engaged on foreign service, practically all naval matters centralised in home waters. The book is divided into two parts, the first dealing with the work Of the Royal Navy around our shores, and the second part treating the British and Allied Fleets abroad. The veil over our Fleet remains as inscrutable as ever, and One is tempted to question the need for such absolute secrecy. The enemy is, Of course, greatly hindered in learn ing Of the dispositions and strength Of our squadrons and patrols, but the disappointment which the public feels is keen. It tends to make us overlook the wonderful patience of our sailors in their long and weary vigil for the hiding foe. Some/day let us hope that we shall be told the full story of the glorious deeds Of our men who had kept the seas in fair weather and foul, in winter and summer, by night and day, in the hope of encountering the enemy, in the enforcing of the blockade, in the protection of our vast overseas trade, in the supplying Of our overseas forces, and in keeping our coasts immune from the inhuman and murderous invader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning study of the Franco-American undeclared naval war at the turn of the nineteenth century, this history of the nearly forgotten struggle is filled with the dramatic actions of such frigates as the Constellation and her capture of l'Insurgente, as well as the sundry operations that protected American commerce from the depredations of the French corsairs in the Caribbean. First published in 1987, the book avoids the parochialism of earlier studies by placing the American war within a European context. It takes a critical look at the command and operations of the first secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert, and how under his direction the Navy proved itself ship for ship as--if not more--effective against French privateers than the Royal Navy. The book also examines how the Navy served the nation's commercial and diplomatic interests, a pattern of activity that would become known as gunboat diplomacy, and how the Navy's successes assured it a permanency that had eluded the Continental Navy. Awarded prizes from the American Revolution Round Table of New York and other organizations, the respected work answers penetrating questions about what happened and why, and the author's judicious evaluations of participants and their policies make an important contribution to the literature. This new Classics edition is introduced by the author, chair of the maritime history department at East Carolina University and author of three other books, including Origins of Maritime Strategy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy in the War of the American Revolution As soon as the War of the Revolution was fairly entered upon, the subject of a navy engaged the attention of public men, and this was very natural, as the majority of the colonists were descendants of those who owed allegiance to the Mis tress oi the Seas. In October, I776, the Americans (i here use for the first time this distinctive title), had thirteen vessels in course of construction, and ten comparatively large, with several smaller ones in actual service. Early in 1781 all of these, having done more or less good service, had been removed from the list by various causes, mostly disasters. About this time Congress ordered to be built three 74's, five frigates and two smaller vessels. I can find no record of the larger vessels referred to, excepting the America, seventy four guns, a new ship, which was presented to Louis XVI of France in 1782. Private armed vessels, mostly small ones, were fitted out by the Colonies and accomplished, for the opportunities ai forded, effective service.
