Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1890, Italian immigrants began settling in Bridgeport to work in the mills and factories along the Schuylkill River. With more than 5,000 residents by 1923, the need for an Italian parish was evident. Rev. John Colantonio was sent to establish the parish, and in 1924, construction began on the lower church. Shortly thereafter, Bridgeports oldest and longest-running event was created in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast. Since its beginning the feast has continued to be a family tradition. The vintage images in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Italian Feast feature that tradition and the thousands of visitors who have made a pilgrimage to Bridgeport each year to celebrate the feast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Lake View is one of Chicago's most popular neighborhoods. But what exactly is East Lake View? It is Wrigleyville, Boystown, and Belmont Harbor. It is New Town, if you talk to a longtimer. Change has swept East Lake View many times, often leaving a new name behind. One thing has stayed the same--the neighborhood's popularity. East Lake View drew tourists as far back as 1854, when Lake View House opened as a rural resort. This book unfolds the history of East Lake View, from the 19th century to the 21st century. Readers will learn about the neighborhood's time as a Swedish enclave and then as a haven for Japanese Americans, including Tokyo Rose. The book charts the wild 1970s on Broadway, the gay 1980s on Halsted, and the beer-soaked 1990s in Wrigleyville. This visual history of East Lake View mines Chicago archives and old-timers' scrapbooks to reveal the neighborhood in hundreds of never before published photographs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island is a beautiful region with a unique community whose history and ethnic composition have resulted in the evolution of a powerful sense of identity and place. While outsiders may think only of the island's perennial economic woes and long economic dependence on coal mining and steel production, it is also the home of a rich, vibrant, and distinct culture. Brian Douglas Tennyson's Cape Bretoniana is the first bibliography to gather together all known publications relating to the history, culture, economy, and politics of Cape Breton Island. With more than 6000 entries, it not only provides a comprehensive listing of publications and post-graduate theses, but also detailed annotations on the listings. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, volume and issue number in the case of periodicals, and page references, followed by a brief description of the item. Cape Breton has never been so thoroughly documented. This bibliography will help to ensure that ? even in a world becoming increasingly homogenized by the forces of globalization ? unique cultural identities like Cape Breton's can be preserved and nurtured.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roseto is a small Italian-American community in east-central Pennsylvania. This fifteen-year study drawing on medical histories, physical examinations, and laboratory tests, compared a large sample of Rosetans to inhabitants of two neighboring communities, Bangor and Nazareth, and followed up this research with a sociological study of the three communities. Despite a greater prevalence of obesity in Roseto, and despite similar dietary, smoking, and exercise habits and similar ethnic and genetic background, the inhabitants of Roseto were relatively immune to heart disease at the beginning of the research in 1963. They were also strikingly tenacious in adhering to Old World values and customs. When these traditional values and relationship were abandoned by the rising generation, the death rate from heart disease climbed toward the American norm. The study concluded that unconditional interpersonal support counteracts life stress and thus preserves life.

Book excerpt: In over 200 images accompanied by an insightful narrative, this collection uncovers the trials and triumphs of migration, ethnic survival, and daily life. Italians have been a part of the Chicago community since the 1850s. The city's Italian immigration rate peaked in 1914, and many of these new residents settled in neighborhoods on the north, west, and south sides of the Loop and in the industrial suburbs of Chicago. An intriguing visual tour, Italians in Chicago explores the lives of over four generations of the community's residents and experiences.
