Book excerpt: Australian and New Zealand volunteers were already in Serbia, treating wounded Serbian soldiers and fighting a typhus epidemic, before the ANZACs landed at Gallipoli in 1915. The Gallipoli Campaign sealed Serbia’s fate, however, as Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria moved to secure a land supply corridor to Turkey through Serbia. Australians and New Zealanders accompanied the Serbian Army on a deadly retreat over wintry mountains to the Adriatic coast. When the fighting shifted to the Salonika or ‘Macedonian’ Front, many served there with the British Army, the Royal Flying Corps, two AIF units and six Royal Australian Navy destroyers in the Adriatic and Aegean Seas. Some died in action, others from disease. Several hundred doctors, nurses and orderlies treated the wounded and sick in an Australian-led volunteer hospital and in British and New Zealand Army hospitals. The author Miles Franklin was a medical orderly supporting the Serbian Army; her little-known memoir is quoted extensively in this book. Fifteen hundred Australians and New Zealanders served on this little known yet crucial battlefront. Now for the first time we have an engaging and comprehensive account of what they experienced and achieved in the Great War.

Get this into the paws of the sea dog in your life.' - Griff Rhys Jones 'A book that had to be written' - Let's Talk 'People ashore don't realise what a grim war we are waging at sea with the Germans. A cold-blooded war, in a way I think requiring the maximum of bravery from the men of both sides in the long run, as it is so ceaseless and intangible. You just don't know whether the next moment will be your last.' Robert Hichens, RNVSR Several years ago, Julia Jones was searching through long-forgotten items stored at her house and discovered some suitcases of old written material, which turned out to be accounts by her father of his experiences in the RNVSR (Royal Naval Volunteer Supplementary Reserve). She realised that as a child she'd met some of the people mentioned, and although she was too young to truly know them, these youthful impressions spurred her on to rediscovery and understanding. In this absorbing book Julia tells the compelling stories of the yachtsmen. Some were famous (such as Sir Peter Scott), others were wealthy (such as August Courtauld, who returned his pay to help with the war effort) but the majority were just 'ordinary' professionals such as publishers, lawyers and advertising agents, who signed up because they loved sailing. Few could ever have dreamed that they would end up acting in areas that were so far beyond their normal lives, as they found themselves commanding destroyers and submarines, and undertaking covert missions of sabotage. Some undertook the dangerous daily drudgery of minesweeping; others tackled unexploded bombs, engaged the enemy in high-speed attacks or played key roles in Ian Fleming's famous intelligence commandos. This varied crew of men were given tasks vital to the war effort, requiring endurance, extraordinary bravery, resourcefulness and quick thinking. Some died in the process, but for the ones who survived, Julia asks how their experiences changed them. Could their love of sailing and the sea survive the harsh realities of war?

This, their record, is written for Berkshire readers. If it shall, in after years, enable my comrades to recall the events and some of the emotions of our soldier-life; if it shall tend to unite us in sympathy; if it shall present to our friends a fuller view of our deeds and experiences, and bring out more vividly the merits of our "fallen brave," I shall be satisfied. Writing it has been to me a "labor of love." I have written fully and earnestly of the principles underlying this struggle; otherwise, I have confined my pen to our regimental life as it came within my observation and experience. It would be sad to believe those principles were no part of that life. My chief regret is, that fuller data did not enable me to do justice to all our dead. The engraving of Colonel Bartlett, one of the best evidences of the skill of the leading engraver of New York, A. W. Ritchie, needs this remark: On applying for a photograph, from which to obtain an engraving, the Colonel sent me several, taken in different styles, by different artists, at different times. Book excerpt: John Potts Slough, the Union commander at the Battle of Glorieta Pass, lived a life of relentless pursuit for success that entangled him in the turbulent events of mid-nineteenth-century America. As a politician, Slough fought abolitionists in the Ohio legislature and during Kansas Territory's fourth and final constitutional convention. He organized the 1st Colorado Volunteer Infantry after the Civil War broke out, eventually leading his men against Confederate forces at the pivotal engagement at Glorieta Pass. After the war, as chief justice of the New Mexico Territorial Supreme Court, he struggled to reform corrupt courts amid the territory's corrosive Reconstruction politics. Slough was known to possess a volcanic temper and an easily wounded pride. These traits not only undermined a promising career but ultimately led to his death at the hands of an aggrieved political enemy who gunned him down in a Santa Fe saloon. Recounting Slough's timeless story of rise and fall during America's most tumultuous decades, historian Richard L. Miller brings to life this extraordinary figure.

Book excerpt: On March 5, 1985, Al Novak’s life changed forever—and not just because his wife was a week away from giving birth to their youngest daughter. That was the day he became chaplain at the Genesee County Jail in Michigan and began leading inmates from crime to Christ. Over the next thirty-three years, he helped those bound by sin and by the laws of man to find their way to the Lord. The pivot came after some tough years living in Gladwin, where the author learned not to rely on the mediocre employment he’d occasionally find or the welfare system but God himself. In this memoir, the author explores how he found his way to Christ—even when his fellow police officers seemed less than pleased with his newfound faith. He also looks back at his growing up days living in the Co-Op—families pooling their resources—to his high school adventures and then to marriage and a police career. Al shares his God hunt as he learned to be content with his wages and discovered the unlimited power of prayer. He moved from intimacy to legalism to grace to performing for God but found little spiritual satisfaction until He got a great big hug from God. You’ll be inspired to overcome challenges and find your faith renewed as you learn about the author’s incredible experiences in Chasing Intimacy.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Services of the Ninety-Sixth: Ohio Volunteers The Object in preparing this unpretentious volume is to place a sketch Of the History of the 96th Ohio Volunteers in permanent form, chiefly for the benefit Of the survivors of that command and the friends of those who gave their lives to their country while serving under its banner. As the events of the great war OF the rebellion become dimmed in the shadows Of receding years, increased interest will attach to them and the pages in which they are recorded become valuable, with all their omissions and imperfections; for our posterity cannot fail to refer with just pride to those who Offered their lives for the preservation Of republican liberty, as we do to those who, in the dark days Of seventy-six, won its blessings for the world, bequeathing all to our care and keeping. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One Hundred and Twentieth Regiment New York State Volunteers: A Narrative of Its Services in the War for the Union New York was behind none Of her sister States in the promptness with which she responded to the President's call, and in her large and free contributions of troops to swell the armies of the Republic. Her soldiers were found in every part of the widely-extended field where their services were needed. They stood shoulder to shoulder with comrades from other States, cheerfully bearing whatever burdens their duty to the country and love for the cause imposed upon them. This State has a bright record for the number and character Of the troops she furnished during the war, not less than for the amount of hard service they rendered in defending the flag and securing success for the national cause. Book excerpt: Mention of the Zulu War of 1879 inevitably conjures up images of the redcoats at Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift; it is often forgotten that the limited number of Imperial troops available led to the raising of several thousand local troops from Natal, Cape Colony and beyond. Typified by hard-riding white frontiersmen and lightly armed African infantry, these units made up for the British Army's severe shortage of cavalry scouts and local knowledge. Ian Castle's concise study of their organisation, uniforms, weapons, and campaign service covers a far wider range of units than ever previously published; it is illustrated with rare photographs and vivid colour plates.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Forty-Eighth Regiment: New York State Volunteers, in the War for the Union; 1861-1865 To My Comrades: The most gifted of modern women has written that, "If you would love a woman without ever looking back upon your love as a folly, she must die while you are courting her; and if you would maintain the slightest belief in human heroism, you must never make a pilgrimage to see the hero." I hope that in all your homes that double sarcasm is doubly contradicted. This book - which is the poor record of your heroic deeds - has been written chiefly that your children, who daily "see the hero," may know his history, and when they can no longer sec you. that they may still possess the story of your most glorious years. Three years ago, when 1 was requested to become the historian of the regiment, I consented conditionally that some one should be procured to write the historical sketch, while I would edit the book and see it through the press. For a while it seemed that we had succeeded in procuring the very services we needed from an officer who had been with the regiment through most of its career. But vexatious delays occurred, and finally, to our great disappointment, an entire miscarriage. Nothing remained but the abandonment of the enterprise - which all lamented - or my assuming the task. With great reluctance I therefore undertook it. I had but little time to give to it. and moreover I felt myself disqualified by the subordinate position I had held in the regiment to write its history.
