Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mazatlán's Historical Center is a wonderful place to spend a vacation. It has beaches for lounging, sunbathing, and dipping, plazas that are relaxing and lively at the same time, wonderful restaurants, cafés, and bistros, acrobatic and dance troupes and other entertainment with contributions voluntary, shopping opportunities everywhere with ambulatory vendors, kiosks, and art, folk art, and souvenir shops, numerous small grocery stores, a block-size municipal market that seems to offer nearly everything under the sun, and a large department store. And you may enjoy it all by casually strolling through the streets or hailing a pulmonia (something of a golf cart on steroids) to enjoy a speedy ride with the feeling of wind blowing about you. One suggestion is that if you're taking a pulmonia to a spot without a well-known name, a map may be helpful in pointing out the location. This guide provides information on the Historical Center of Mazatlán as of 2017. The Histórico Centro is a very rapidly changing city center with many street improvements and new businesses. On our subsequent visits in 2018 and 2019, we have seen many of these changes and hope to put together a later guide of what we've seen. As an example, one change since 2017 is that El Shrimp Bucket was open only sporadically in 2019, an apparent casualty of increased competition. Also, Macaws has changed ownership and apparently staff. Nonetheless, much of the information in this book remains quite current, and we hope that you find it a useful aid in enjoying the many delights that this city has to offer. One remark that we should definitely make is that we found Mazaltanians very friendly and very helpful, and very ready to offer assistance. The historical section of this guide gives an introduction to the history of Mexico and Mesoamerica through 4000 BP and a background summary of events that led to the formation of Spain in the 15th century CE, just prior to its great oceanic voyages and its American colonizations. We plan to continue the saga of Mexican history from 4000 BP to the present in subsequent guides.

Book excerpt: Great , great grandfather John Taylor braved the wilds and moved his family from the Pennsylvania Dutch country to the new state of Indiana at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Southern Indiana was sparsely settled but formed the base for the Taylor descendents. Dr. Taylors life was strongly influenced by his mothers great spiritual belief in god and the need for a Christian life and education for her children. The great depression years helped form the basis for a lifetime of hard work and accomplishments. The hope of giving something back to family and society makes life worthwhile. His choice of surgical training proved to be the basis for his subsequent success. A letter he was told he should not have written because it was not proper military protocol proved to be the source of a military career that was unsurpassed. He was chosen to help develop the medical care of Americas first men into space, Project Mercury. Forty years of pioneering surgery in the field of heart and lung surgery were the golden age of medicine. Farming, ranching, banking, real estate, flying and travel to all seven continents and over fifty countries fulfilled a life that was more than anyone could hope for.

Book excerpt: A straightforward account of a Couple's wacky voyage - cum - pilgramage from California to Ecuadar in the late 70's as seen through the eyes of the young wife. Full of local descriptions of Mexico, Central and South America, it combines a factual chronicle of their trip with a rich retelling of the human side with all of its foibles. It is not only about where they went but even more about how they went, but even more about how they went, how they managed to arrive. A "how-not-to" book. Great fun . . .

Book excerpt: Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) was already a well-established writer when he traveled to California as special correspondent for the New York Tribune in the summer of 1849. On his return to New York, Taylor established himself not only as one of America's great travel writers but as a true man of letters, producing distinguished novels and poems as well as nonfiction for the next quarter century. Eldorado (1850) consists of Taylor's rewritten dispatches to his paper. Volume 2 tells of the 1849 elections, horseback tours of the Sierras, gold camps on the Mokelumne River, analysis of the 1849 overland emigration, San Francisco social and cultural life, and a return to the East with stops in Guadalajara, Mazatlàn, Mexico City, Popcateptel, and Vera Cruz. Thomas Butler King's official report on California, 22 March 1850, is printed as an appendix.
