Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An achingly beautiful work of historical fiction that moves between Germany on the eve of World War II and present-day Wisconsin, unspooling a thread of love, longing, and the powerful bonds of family. • A TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK! Based on the author’s own family letters, Send for Me tells the story of Annelise, a young woman in prewar Germany. Growing up working at her parents’ popular bakery, she's always imagined a future full of delicious possibilities. Despite rumors that anti-Jewish sentiment is on the rise, Annelise and her parents can’t quite believe that it will affect them; they’re hardly religious. But as she falls in love, marries, and gives birth to her daughter, the dangers grow closer. Soon Annelise and her husband are given the chance to leave for America, but they must go without her parents, whose future and safety are uncertain. Two generations later in a small Midwestern city, Annelise’s granddaughter, Clare, is a young woman newly in love. But when she stumbles upon a trove of the letters her great-grandmother wrote from Germany after Annelise's departure, she sees the history of her family’s sacrifices in a new light, leading her to question whether she can still honor the past while planning for her future.

Book excerpt: A vivid and varied collection that addresses family loyalties, dysfunction, violence, and differences, Hurrah’s Nest is White’s imaginative and emotionally honest exploration of growing up the second oldest, first daughter of seven siblings. Childhood experiences are looked at with rawness, sensitivity, and crafted with precision: be it the cutting of her dreadlocks, mother’s abortion, drug trafficking, or her sister’s developmental disability, the language is tender and startling. Hurrah’s Nest—from the confusion of our lives—asks us to make meaning and good from what we’ve bargained and haven’t bargained for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the the award-winning author of Five Star Billionaire and The Harmony Silk Factory comes a whirlwind personal history of modern Asia, as told through his Malaysian and Chinese heritage. In The Face: Strangers on a Pier, acclaimed author Tash Aw explores the panoramic cultural vitality of modern Asia through his own complicated family story of migration and adaptation, which is reflected in his own face. From a taxi ride in present-day Bangkok, to eating Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1980s Kuala Lumpur, to his grandfathers’ treacherous boat journeys to Malaysia from mainland China in the 1920s, Aw weaves together stories of insiders and outsiders, images from rural villages to megacity night clubs, and voices in a dizzying variety of languages, dialects, and slangs, to create an intricate and astoundingly vivid portrait of a place caught between the fast-approaching future and a past that won’t let go. “Mr. Aw is a patient writer, and an elegant one. His supple yet unshowy prose can resemble Kazuo Ishiguro's.… He's a writer to watch." —Dwight Garner, The New York Times “Tash Aw is an essential voice for the global world we live in today." —Yiyun Li, author of Gold Boy, Emerald Girl “Aw is emerging as a master storyteller.' —The Times “Aw's prose can be powerful and mesmerising in its sense of place…and psychological acuity. Haunting and memorable.” —Maya Jaggi, The Guardian Born in Taipei to Malaysian parents, Tash Aw grew up in Kuala Lumpur before moving to Britain to attend university. He is the author of three critically acclaimed novels, The Harmony Silk Factory (2005), Map of the Invisible World (2009), and Five Star Billionaire (2013), which have won the Whitbread First Novel Award, a regional Commonwealth Writers' Prize, and twice been longlisted for the Man Booker prize; they have also been translated into twenty-three languages. His short fiction has won an O. Henry Prize and been published in A Public Space and the landmark Granta 100, amongst others.

Book excerpt: THE 128 POEMS IN "Enduring Ties" celebrate family life, collecting in a single anthology the human story through poetic glimpses of our most intimate and committed relationships. Organized in sections that track the course of a single life -- growing up, marrying, childbearing, parenting, growing older, parting, and inheriting -- these short and accessible poems are drawn from twenty-five-hundred years of world literature: from Sappho to Nikki Giovanni and Elizabeth Bishop, from John Donne to Yehuda Amichai and James Merrill. The ties of family life are universal, and Grant Hardy's selection represents a multicultural experience. African American, Latino, and Asian American voices are all represented here, as are poetic traditions from around the world and through the ages, including a generous sampling from medieval China. Each poet affirms the strength and fragility of the long-term ties of kinship, the joy and pleasure set against the real possibility of disappointment and loss. And each poem in this volume is an expression of deep and abiding love, the kind that calls forth what is best in us and motivates us to keep trying. Brief biographies of the poets and an appendix with notes on poetic form, using examples drawn from poems in the anthology, will inform readers drawn to experiencing these works again and again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's writer and poet Amy Ludwig VanDerwater leads us on an adventure through poetry, pointing out craft elements along the way that students can use to improve all their writing, from idea finding to language play. "Poems wake us up, keep us company, and remind us that our world is big and small," Amy explains. "And, too, poems teach us how to write. Anything." This is a practical book designed for every classroom teacher. Each lesson exploration includes three poems, one by a contemporary adult poet and two by students in grades 2 through 8, which serve as models to illustrate how poetry teaches writers to: find ideas, choose perspective and point of view, structure texts, play with language, craft beginnings and endings, choose titles. Students will learn how to replicate the craft techniques found in poetry to strengthen all writing, from fiction to opinion, from personal narrative to information. "Poets arrange words and phrases just as prose writers do, simply in tighter spaces," Amy argues. "In the tight space of poetry, readers can identify writing techniques after reading one page, not thirty pages."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beautiful Poems and Short Stories is a book about life experiences and people who have made great impressions and have taught me a lot about life. I had a wonderful neighborhood with very interesting families that lived there. We all cared for each other even though we did not have a lot of money, but on our street we didn't consider ourselves as being poor. We all helped each other in need and because of our love for each other, we were rich in heart. It is about how much fun we all had as children, playing all kinds of games, running, jumping, playing sports, riding our bicycles and homemade go-carts all over the neighborhood until night fall. There are poems about my siblings that I grew up with, we had so much fun, and some were good at times and bad at times. Some of my poems are happy and sad, one minute you are laughing, then, the next time you are sad. It is about life and life's experiences. Some of my poems are inspiring and inspirational. Most of all it will take you back to the good old days when you were a child and you could walk in the streets of Little Rock, Arkansas south end at night and nothing happen to you. It will take you back to when you played without a care in the world. You could shout to the top of your lungs, right out loud and have fun. Life was never boring, it was always something going on good or bad. It is also about the times when my family and I would travel and we would get a chance to see the beautiful sites in Arkansas and other states in the USA. Some parts of this country is so breathtaking. This book is relaxing and calming as you read. It will take you back in the past, in the future and will still keep you in the present. It is always a good time to remember the good old days and reminisce about some of the things that happened in the past. It has poems about my dad, when he served in World War II and about my mother who has Alzheimer's. Each poem is very special and so very nice. When you start reading this book you won't want to put it down until you are finished.

Book excerpt: The book includes the poems and stories, out of those Zeitgeist for peace, The Nexus—a Relation, To Akriti (figure), Indian Air, Lady in Draught, Preserve our Family, Some thing, Enchanting belle of basilica are some of the poems of my liking. These are lovely in some or the other way. The book covers three published poems in the college magazine -Colors in Kargil, Indian Air, and Kair College Women. The poems are thematically arranged to present peace, country and God, and some other to women, gender and civilization; if some to human behaviour, other to nature and mysticism etc., Battle of Sexes is a unique poem in itself; its title has been derived from Swift’s Battle of Books; dedicated to the time not to show good or bad and new or old, but no highlight confrontation and compromise of genders’ heresy.
