This was his second marriage he had been a widower for a number of years before its occur rence, and the father of three sons. Every chance was now afforded Arnold of wise and just rulership. In spite of past disputes and adventures not wholly creditable, he still presented before the world a fairly clean record, and whatever minor blemishes may have spotted his good name, these were obscured by the almost dazzling lustre of his soldierly career. But no sooner was he installed in his new position at Philadelphia than he began to Show, with wilful perversity, those evil impulses which thus far had remained relatively latent. Almost as soon as he entered the town he disclosed to its citizens the most offensive traits of arrogance and tyranny. But this was not all. Not merely was he accused on every side of such faults as the improper issuing of passes, the closing of Philadelphia Shops on his arrival, the imposition of menial offices upon the sons of freemen performing military duty, the use of wagons furnished by the State for transporting private property but misdeeds of a far graver nature were traced to him, savoring of the criminality that prisons are built to punish. The scandal ous gain with which he sought to fill a spendthrift purse caused wide and vehe ment rebuke. For a man of such high and peculiar place his commercial dab blings and speculative schemes argued most deplorably against him. There seems to be no doubt that he made personal use of the public moneys with which he was intrusted; that he secured by unworthy and illegal means a naval State prize, brought into port by a Pennsylvanian ship; and that he meditated the fitting up of a privateer, with intent to secure from the foe such loot on the high seas as piratical hazard would permit. His house in Philadelphia was one of the finest that the town possessed he drove about in a carriage and four he entertained with excessive luxury and a large retinue of servants; he revelled in all sorts of pompous parade. Such ostentation would have roused adverse comment amid the simple colonial surroundings of a century ago, even if he had merely been a citizen of extraordinary wealth. But being an officer intrusted with the most important dignities in a country both struggling for its freedom and impover ished as to funds, he now played a part of exceptional shame and folly. His aspirations, his anxieties and his heart struggles, may have an interest for beings of higher intelligence, but for the mass of mankind these have no charms. But if by some cunning device, by some daring enterprise, or after long struggles and perseverance, he acquire a fortune, then the reluctant world is lavish in its admiration, his history is full of interest, and every one is anxious to know how he achieved success. To gratify this universal longing, it is proposed to give the history of the lives of six hundred successful men of Illinois. The Publishers found the second business principle on the fact that they are determined to spare neither labor nor expense in giving to the world the most authentic information how these men have won fortune, how the world has been benefited by their labors, and what has been the turning-point of their success. These examples are of great interest, may spread good seed, encourage the weary, give new life to the desponding, and energy to the aspiring. Although seldom expressed, and often not even acknowledged to themselves, they want only the inspiration of example to point the way, to accomplish a full fruition of their hopes. There are certain differences in the mythology which have been made a ground for supposing a separate authorship. But, in the first place, this would do nothing to explain them; in the second, they find their natural ex planation in observing that the scene of the wanderings is laid in other lands, be yond the circle of Achaian knowledge and tradition, and that Homer modifies his scheme to meet the ethnical variations as he gathered them from the trading navigators of Phoenicia, who alone could have supplied him with the information required for his purpose. That information was probably colored more or less by ignorance and by fraud. But we can trace in it the sketch of an imaginary voyage to the northern regions of Europe, and it has some remarkable features of internal evidence, sup ported by the facts, and thus pointing to its genuineness. In latitudes not de scribed as separate we have reports of the solar day apparently contradictory. In one case there is hardly any night, so that the shepherd might earn double wages. In the other, cloud and darkness almost shut out the day. But we now know both of these statements to have a basis of solid truth on the Norwegian coast to the northward, at the different seasons of the midnight sun in summer, and of Christmas, when it is not easy to read at noon. Negro girl. This gave Mrs. Ray an opportunity to prae tice her schemes of persecution on the child, by making him feel that he was nothing more than a slave. It was a year or more before his mother came to see him; then, finding how cruelly he was treated, she took him away. Mr. Adams well remembers the scrubbing she gave him in order to make him look like her boy. When seven years old, he removed with his mother and step-father, John Rogers, to Hoosick, Rensselaer County, New York, where he remained until he was nine years of age. His step-father was honest and temperate, but always poor. In the year 1817, known as the cold season, the cr0ps were all killed by the frosts; and, the next year, his parents removed to Cherry Valley, New York. In 1819 they removed to Monroe County, and settled near Rochester. At this time, Rochester was but a small village, with only one bridge across the river, and the country around was but thinly inhabited; while it was so unhealthy that there were not well people enough to take care of the sick. In this emergency, necessity compelled them to become a town charge; and, as if to add a keener edge to their grief, the law provided that the poor who had not gained a residence should be transported to the town from which they came. Hence Mr. Rogers and his family were compelled to travel from town to town until, in the spring of 1820, their eyes were gladdened by the familiar sight of the old Hoosick Mountains. The same spring, Jervis Adams' mother bound him out to her brother-ih-law. He was to stay two years, and receive his board, clothing, and six months' schooling each year. The last he did not get; but served his time faithfully, though going poorly clad. An important period in Mr. Adams' life begins here, and we give it in his own language: At the age of fourteen, I began to do for myself, on a very small scale.
