Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Ancestors in Europe: An Introduction to American History It is still generally admitted that the most important history for every child is that of his own country, but happily the old narrow conception of the American story as a thing apart from the rest of the world seems to be rapidly passing. The roots of American civilization are in Europe. Our beginnings and early development form a part of one of the most far-reaching changes of history: the expansion of Europe beyond the ancient limits of the Mediterranean world, the discovery of the American continents, the opening of direct sea routes to India and the far East, the commercial revolution, the first stages of the Europeanization of the world. Only in this larger setting can the history of the United States become really intelligible. If we are to understand our own country and how it came to be what it is, we must know something of the story of our ancestors in Europe and of the heritage we have received from them. It was to serve the purpose of such an introduction to American history that the present volume was planned. The general field and larger topics have been chosen to meet the requirements for the sixth grade prescribed by the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association, while that freedom in the choice and treatment of details which the Committee itself so wisely urges, has been exercised. The book may also serve its purpose apart from the Committee's course in any of the grammar grades or early years of the "junior high school." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you conduct your research in person or by mail, this celebrated manual - now in its fourth edition - will guide you in finding your ancestors in Britain or Ireland. Angus Baxter provides detailed instructions for locating records abroad and shows how easy it is to do by mail - or on a vacation trip! He begins with step-by-step instructions on drawing up a family tree, and explains how to use sources close at hand. The search continues by correspondence with family history societies, record offices, and other organizations, before concluding with a possible - but not essential - trip to the source, Britain or Ireland. The new Fourth Edition of this classic work includes discussions of the following topics: -The transfer of important genealogical records from Chancery Lane and St. Catherine's House to the new Family Records Centre in London - most notably, civil registration records, census returns, and records of the prerogative Court of Canterbury. -The 1986, 1996, and 1998 reorganization of counties in England and Wales and the latest information on where to find local records. Where available, URLs are given for country record offices (CROs), as well as for major repositories. Phone and fax numbers, if available, are also given for CROs and other archives. -The British Library transfer of many of its collections from the Great Russel Street location (inside the British Museum) to a new facility at St. Pancras, London -The establishment of the Irish Genealogical Project -The 1998 amalgamation of the Public Record Office and State Paper Office into the National Archives of Ireland. Finally, Baxter demonstrates how the threads of fact can be woven into a rich and detailed family history, the ultimate goal of all searchers determined to find their family roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publication of Lost Worlds introduces to English-speaking readers one of the most original and engaging historians in Germany today. Known for his work in historical demography, Arthur E. Imhof here branches out into folklore, religion, anthropology, psychology, and the history of art. Imhof begins by reconstructing the world and worldview of Johannes Hooss, a farmer in a remote Hessian village. The everyday life of such a man was particular to his region; he spoke a local dialect and shared a regional culture. By exploring the various systems that made sense out of this circumscribed existence - astrology, the folklore of the seasons, and Christian interpretations of birth, confirmation, marriage, and death - Imhof expands the book into a speculation on why life in the late twentieth century can seem meaningless and difficult. Rooted in Imhof's belief that we need stability and values that transcend the individual, Lost Worlds inspires us to examine our own ways of seeing the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Beginnings in Europe and America The history of the United States is a branch of the history of the world. Life in America is a transplanted European life. Its development here has been largely determined by new world conditions, but its origins were in Europe or even in that older world about the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. As civilization has been handed on from race to race during the ages, each people has. added its own peculiar contribution to it. Primitive men who lived before the dawn of history, the earliest civilized nations of the Old East, the Hebrews, the Greeks, the Romans, the English, and all the other European nations whose sons had a hand in colonizing America were the makers of our civilization. Our life today cannot be fully understood without adding to a clear knowledge of its growth in America an appreciation of our debt to each of the races who were our cultural ancestors. This book is an attempt to tell in a plain and simple way the story of the growth of our civilization from its earliest beginnings in prehistoric times, to point out the contribution to it made in turn by each of the great peoples of the Old World, and to show how in the fullness of time it was transferred from Europe to America. The sub-title of the book - How Civilization Grew in the Old World and Came to the New - exactly expresses its theme.
