May “From American history books to Pirates of the Caribbean, the work of Howard Pyle continues to captivate us...”-Big Think “...it has a significant, universal theme, and it presents the details of daily life in Germany of the thirteenth century accurately and unobtrusively, making the period real and alive.”-Malcolm Usrey “He is as careful and painstaking and artistic with his children’s books as the very best novelist are with their novels...But best of them all is Pyle’s Otto of the Silver Hand. It is a story of German chivalry in the days of the robber barons.”-Willa Cather Otto of the Silver Hand (1888), Howard Pyle’s first novel for children, is a grim yet empowering narrative of medieval Germany, following the adventures of a young hero caught between the power struggles of two families. With its gripping battle scenes, romance, and villainous warlords, this is a reading experience that continues to thrill over one hundred years after its initial publication. Otto, a gentle boy born to a noble germanic family in the middle ages, has been raised in the compassionate seclusion of a monastery to protect him from the violent rivalries of his family. When the boy turns twelve years old he is retrieved back to Drachenhausen, his ancestral castle to begin his training in knighthood. Soon Otto discovers that his father, the Baron Conrad, a brutal robber baron, is in the midst of a savage vendetta with his the family of his slain foe, the Baron Fredrick. When Otto’s father and his knights are summoned to the Imperial Court the Fredrick clan attacks Castle Drachenhausen, burns it to the ground, and kidnaps the boy. Baron Henry, the heir of Fredrick’s clan, keeps Otto in the dungeon of his own fortress. Until his father arrives to rescue him, Otto experiences both terrible brutality and the gentle affections of Henry’s beautiful daughter. Through Otto’s ordeals and suffering he recognized the deficiencies of the human character, yet he rose above the wickedness with his gentleness and love. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Otto of the Silver Hand is both modern and readable.

It was first published in 1888 by Charles Scribner's Sons. The novel was one of the first written for young readers that went beyond the chivalric ideals of the time period, and showed how cruel the time period could really be.Plot summaryThe book centers upon the life of Otto, the son of German warlord Baron Conrad. Otto's mother, Baroness Matilda, has died in premature labour, brought on by the sight of the Baron's battle wounds, prompting Conrad to take his newborn son to be raised in a nearby monastery. When Otto reaches the age of eleven his father returns to claim him from the gentle monks, taking him back to live in Castle Drachenhausen, ("Dragons' House", in German) the ancestral mountaintop fortress from which the Baron launches his attacks. Here Otto learns of and is horrified by his father's life as a robber baron. Otto is particularly horrified by the revelation of how Conrad killed a defeated, surrendering enemy, Baron Frederick. A rival robber baron, Baron Frederick had been with his men defending a column of merchants in return for the tribute they were paying him.Shortly thereafter, Baron Conrad obeys a summons to the Imperial Court, taking the vast majority of his men-at-arms with him as an impressive escort but leaving Castle Drachenhausen practically undefended as a result. The late Baron Frederick's heir, his nephew Baron Henry, then attacks the castle and burns it to the ground. Baron Henry then takes Otto captive to his own fortress, Castle Trutzdrachen ("Dragon-scorner," in German). In the dungeon of his castle, Baron Henry explains to Otto that he has sworn a solemn oath that any member of Baron Conrad's House who fell into his hands would never be able to strike a blow like the one which killed his uncle, Baron Frederick. Because Otto is so young, the Baron keeps this oath by cutting off his right hand instead of killing him, and as an afterthought has a healer sent to tend to him. While Otto is feverish from the pain of his wound, he is comforted by Baron Henry's eight-year-old daughter Pauline, who visits his cell.Otto's father Baron Conrad then returns and rescues him with the help of a few remaining loyal followers. Baron Henry and his men give chase and Otto's father kills Baron Henry in single combat but dies in the process, choosing to sacrifice his life so that his son can escape. Otto flees to the monastery where he grew up and is given refuge there. After Otto regains his health the Abbot accompanies him to an audience with the Emperor, who promises restitution and takes responsibility for Otto's future upbringing. ........................Howard Pyle (March 5, 1853 - November 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. Book excerpt: Born into a family that is already engaged in a blood feud with another noble house, Otto is sent to live with monks, but is reclaimed at age 12 by his militant, but loving father. The gentle-natured boy is kidnapped and mutilated by the rival family. Pauline, his captors daughter helps him escape. His father allows him to return to the monks who place him under the emperor's protection. His silver hand is a replacement for the one Otto lost while in captivity, but his injury does not prevent him from maturing wisely and marrying Pauline.A rich and engrossing thread of Romance runs through this tale of the motherless son of a valiant robber baron of Medieval Germany. Young Otto, born into a warring household in an age when lawless chiefs were constantly fighting each other or despoiling the caravans of the merchant burghers, is raised in a monastery only to return to his family's domain and become painfully involved in the blood feud between his father and the rival house of Trutz-Drachen.The narrative is told with Howard Pyle's consummate skill and illustrated with some of the most enchanting sketches ever done for a book of this type. Like the same author's version of The Story of King Arthur and His Knights and his collection of original stories known as The Wonder Clock, this book has become a legend, a modern story with the feel and sound of an ancient tale. It is a reading adventure that youngsters will not soon forget
