One of the few regions that never forced a draft, thousands of men volunteered, motivated by patriotism, abolitionism or a yearning for adventure. Neither they nor their families were ever the same, and local author Natalie Joy Woodall relates their diverse experiences. William Adriance enlisted twice, despite suffering from rheumatism, marrying and starting a family during the war. Otis Mason Miner and his brother enlisted shortly after Fort Sumter surrendered, and in later years, Otis and his wife became pillars of their community. Many others made the ultimate sacrifice or suffered from wounds--seen and unseen--for the rest of their lives. Discover the fascinating stories of survival and sacrifice from Oswego County and the Civil War.

This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the 400,000 men from New York State called to duty in the Union armed forces during the Civil War, approximately 12,000 or 75 percent of the voting population, called Oswego County home. Veterans from other states or Canada later settled in Oswego County and made the place their home as well. This book tells the stories of thirty-seven of these soldiers. Some were chosen for their post-war activities, whether it was volunteerism, politics, or profession. Others were selected to demonstrate the high cost of war for survivors who returned to civilian life. Still others, who had re-enlisted for a second tour of duty, made the ultimate sacrifice, leading to far-reaching consequences for those they left behind. Along with the men who served, this book also tells the story of the women who supported them and who were involved in supporting the Union cause. Author Natalie Joy Woodall has conducted extensive research to uncover many previously unknown stories of many of these brave men and gives the precise location for each gravesite.

Book excerpt: Oswego County, New York, bordering the southeastern shore of Lake Ontario, is an area rich in history from the colonial period up to the present. In the years before the Civil War, concerned residents participated in the abolition movement and the underground railroad, assisting runaway slaves to safety in Canada. By 1865 Oswego County had furnished an estimated 12,000 men to the Union cause. Of this number over a thousand formed the 110th Regiment NYSV which was enrolled in the summer of 1862 after President Abraham Lincoln called for 300,000 additional troops to replace dead, disabled, or discharged troops. The citizens of the county rallied to ensure that its quota of one regiment would be filled by enlistments and not the dreaded draft. So great was the response that another regiment, the 147th, would also be filled. Reasons for enlisting included patriotism and hatred of slavery, to say nothing of the newly implemented system of bounties. Men of all ages from many walks of life enrolled and when the final roster was completed, the number of enlistees was 1,025. Unlike many regiments, the 110th saw little battlefield action but its story was eventful nonetheless. Time spent in Louisiana and Dry Tortugas, Florida, deeply affected these soldiers, most of whom had never traveled beyond Oswego County. Men of the 110th Regiment: Oswego's Own tells the story of this organization and traces the career of every member of the unit.

Book excerpt: This is Civil War history from the front lines, by a woman who lived it. She is an unknown heroine in her Central New York home county where she lived for 78 of her 93 years. What is most fascinating are the letters, newspaper articles, and United States Sanitary Commission Agent reports that she wrote during and after the war. Her descriptions of locations, activities, and battles put the reader right there with her. After the war, she, her husband, and their parents homesteaded in central Kansas, where she was left alone after their deaths; to survive she wrote articles for the local newspaper about her Civil War experiences. She was the only woman at the Oswego County's 147th Volunteer Regiment Gettysburg monument dedication to receive a veterans' medal. Her life after the Civil War was one of struggle, pain, and loss, yet she remained steadfast in her desire and drive to serve others. Local history, women's history, and Civil War history are all covered in this absorbing story.

Book Synopsis Freedom Journey by : Edythe Ann Quinn
Download or read book Freedom Journey written by Edythe Ann Quinn and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-01-31 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through wonderfully detailed letters, recruit rosters, and pension records, Edythe Ann Quinn shares the story of thirty-five African American Civil War soldiers and the United States Colored Troop (USCT) regiments with which they served. Associated with The Hills community in Westchester County, New York, the soldiers served in three regiments: the 29th Connecticut Infantry, 14th Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (11th USCT), and the 20th USCT. The thirty-sixth Hills man served in the Navy. Their ties to family, land, church, school, and occupational experiences at home buffered the brutal indifference of boredom and battle, the ravages of illness, the deprivations of unequal pay, and the hostility of some commissioned officers and white troops. At the same time, their service among kith and kin bolstered their determination and pride. They marched together, first as raw recruits, and finally as seasoned veterans, welcomed home by generals, politicians, and above all, their families and friends.
