Book excerpt: The understanding of the in vivo performance of synthetic materials is largely dependent upon a profound knowledge of the properties of the materials in question. Analogous to materials science in its broadest sense, the basis for biomaterials science is formed by microstructural there. It is therefore, that in this series on structure property relationships in biomaterials a substantial part is devoted to the analysis of the basic properties of the various synthetic biomaterials. In addition, the effect of microstructural aspects on properties is considered at great length.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rigid internaI fixation of mandibular fractures has become a widely ac cepted practice among European surgeons. The caution or even outright re jection voiced at a congress of the German Society of Maxillofacial Sur 1970s is no longer prevalent. Through a process of geons held in the late critical review and implementation, rigid internaI fixation has become an established treatment modality at numerous centers, especially in Switzer land, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Netherlands. By comparison, the method has received very little attention in North America and the Anglo-Saxon countries. By and large, surgeons in these countries continue to treat mandibular fractures by intermaxillary fixation, possibly supplemented by the use of interosseous wires. Many recent edi tions of surgical texts confirm this. Lately, however, there appears to be a surge of interest in methods of functionally stable internaI fixation, especially in the United States of America, and AO/ ASIF instruction courses are increasingly in demand. This book is intended to aid course participants in their lessons and practi cal exercises and also to guide the clinical practitioner in the application of AO/ ASIF principles. Basel, September 1988 B.SPIESSL VII Acknowledgments I have received help from many sources. The colleagues of the past 20 years who have contributed to the case material upon which this manual is based are too numerous to credit by name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteotomies in the treatment of degenerative and posttraumatic arthritis seem to be a lost art. Even for young patients joint replacement is in vogue. An international group of renowned surgeons present an outstanding hands-on approach to perform correction osteotomies in posttraumatic deformities from the clavicle to the foot. Most of the content is based on case presentations and each case provides step-by-step description of case history, planning, surgical approach, osteotomy, fixation, rehabilitation, and finally pitfalls and pearls. Hundreds of full-color pictures, precise illustrations, and x-rays demonstrate the significant steps in deformity corrections. Long-term follow-ups demonstrate the efficacy of osteotomies in the treatment of malunions. In the principle part preceding the case presentations relevant theoretical information on posttraumatic deformities and osteotomies, operative techniques, and fixation methods, as well as the formation of a surgical plan is provided. Overall the book features over 110 detailed case presentations. This book should convince surgeons to use osteotomies in the treatment of posttraumatic deformities and consider joint-preserving techniques in the treatment of posttraumatic osteoarthritis.

Twenty years ago, Charnley first introduced bone cement to hip surgery, enabling total hip replacement to be practised on a larger scale. There is no question, however, that new approaches must be found to solving the problems of implant loosening, either by developing a new type of cement or by directly anchoring the implant without using ce ment. Much research has been done in this direction in recent years. The methods which have already been tested or are currently being tested were presented and discussed at a symposium on Cementless Fixation of Endoprostheses organized by the Orthopaedic Clinic of the University of Basel and held on 24-26 June 1982. Various possible ap proaches which might be realized in practice were discussed in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the biomechanical bases of cementless fixa tion of endoprostheses, the various models were discussed, with special regard to their biocompatibility, physical characteristics, design, clinical applicability, and previous clinical experience. This book contains the papers delivered at this symposium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the experience gained by the Orthopedic Study Group for the Knee (OAK) of the Swiss Orthopedic Society in dealing with knee problems relating to deficiencies of the cruciate ligaments. The editors, R.P. Jakob and H.-U.Staubli, have collaborated with international authorities to produce this ex cellent work dealing with a great many aspects of knee surgery and especially the problems of the cruciate ligaments. For clarity, the book begins with definitions and explanations of basic biomechan ical terms. The chapters on Anatomy and Biomechanics present up-to-date scien tific information based on anatomic and biomechanical principles as they are ap plied in modern knee surgery. The second part of the book focuses on the OAK-sanctioned approach to knee documentation and evaluation, which is a valuable supplement to other knee evaluation schemes. The European Society for Knee Surgery (ESKA) and the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) are currently at tempting to combine the advantages of the OAK system with an internationally valid evaluation scheme to create a standard evaluation and documentation sys tem that will be acceptable to all physicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second English-language edition of the Small Fragment Set Manual was enthusiastically received and quickly went into a second printing. In preparing a third edition, we found it necessary to revise the text extensively and partly restructure it. The reasons for this are numerous. Experience of recent years has brought technical refinements in the operative treatment of many types of small fracture. Many of these changes stem from the small-fragment-set training programs conducted in Switzerland since 1980, and also from courses and symposia that have been held in other European countries and the United States. These events were occasions for a fruitful ex change of experience with surgeons who were critical of our methods. As a result of this exchange, we perceived a need both to revise our indications and to give greater attention to alternative techniques. We also felt it necessary to respond to criticisms of the first two editions concerning the catalog-like instrument lists and illustrations, and the attention given to fundamental techniques. Many surgeons who work or would like to work with small implants, especially those practicing abroad, are inexperienced in operations on the larger bones. It is imperative that these colleagues be given a basic introduction to the "biomechanical thinking" of the Swiss Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (ASIF).
