Book excerpt: Ce mémoire porte sur l'impact d'un apprentissage explicite de la morphologie dérivationnelle, en situation de classe, afin de vérifier si cette approche pourrait permettre une amélioration de l'orthographe lexicale des enfants tout-venant. Trois classes de CE2 et cinq classes de CM1 ont participé à l'étude. Cinq classes sur huit ont suivi un protocole d'entraînement avec feed-back continu sur 6 semaines, à raison de 15 minutes quotidiennes. Les résultats montrent une amélioration des performances de l'orthographe des mots sur lesquels il est possible d'utiliser la stratégie morphologique et ce, à court comme à moyen terme et quel que soit le niveau orthographique initial des enfants. Quelques élèves néanmoins ne voient pas leurs compétences morphologiques évoluer. L'analyse de quatre cas souligne l'aspect facilitateur de la taille du lexique orthographique. Toutefois aucun critère n'apparaît comme déterminant et seuls des facteurs interindividuels pourraient expliquer la variabilité du bénéfice de l'entraînement auprès des enfants.

Liaison affects a number of word-final consonants which are realized before a vowel but not pre-pausally or before a consonant. Liaisons have traditionally been classified as obligatoire (obligatory), interdite (forbidden) and facultative (optional), the latter category subject to a highly complex prescriptive norm. This volume traces the evolution of this norm in prescriptive works published since the 16th Century, and sets it against actual practice as evidenced from linguists’ descriptions and recorded corpora. The author argues that optional (or variable) liaison in French offers a rich and well-documented example of language change driven by ideology in Kroch’s (1978) terms, in which an elite seeks to maintain a complex conservative norm in the face of generally simplifying changes led by lower socio-economic groups, who tend in this case to restrict liaison to a small set of traditionally obligatory environments.

The abundant data come from primary sources-a large online newspaper corpus (for unofficial Anglicisms) and the dictionary (for official Anglicisms)-and secondary sources. This book examines the appearance and behavior of English items in the lexicon and morphology of French, and explains them in the context of French neology and lexical activity. The first phase of the latest contact period (1990-2015) has its own complex linguistic characterization, including a significant influx of nonce borrowings and very low frequency Anglicisms, heterogeneous and creative borrowing outcomes, and direct phraseological borrowing. This book is a counterargument to the well-known criticism that Anglicisms are lexical polluters. On the contrary, the use of Anglicisms requires the inventive application of complex linguistic rules, and the borrowing of Anglicisms into the French lexicon is convincing proof that language change is systematic. The findings bring novel interdisciplinary insights to the domains of borrowing in a non-bilingual contact setting; global English as a source of lexical creativity in the French lexicon; the phases, patterns and processes of integration of English loanwords; the morphology of borrowing; and computational corpus linguistics.
