Book excerpt: The thrilling second novel in the category-defying Silvers trilogy—melding X-Men and the novels of Blake Crouch—about six extraordinary people who become unwitting refugees on an unfamiliar Earth, and their epic quest to find out why. The end of the world was just the beginning for Hannah and Amanda Given. Saved from apocalypse by three mysterious beings, the sisters, along with four other refugees from their world, were each marked with a silver bracelet and transported to an entirely different Earth: a place where restaurants move through the air like flying saucers and the fabric of time is manipulated by common household appliances, as well as by their very own hands—and a place where terrifying new adversaries seem to be around every corner. Now, after six months in this alt-America and a tumultuous cross-country journey that landed them in New York City, the Silvers find themselves in more trouble than ever. Their new world is dying, and a clan of powerful time benders believes that killing them is the only way to stop it. To make matters worse, the U.S. government has sent its most ruthless covert spy agency to track and capture them. But the biggest threat of all comes from the three god-like beings who first saved them. They had a reason for bringing the Givens and their friends to this world. And when the Silvers learn the awful truth, nothing will ever be the same.

They have a comfortable home, loving parents and a bright future. Then, in a few short weeks, their world collapses. Both parents and a baby brother are taken by the epidemic, and six heart-broken orphans are forced out of the only home they have ever known into the the horrors of abject poverty. Rosey, George and Anabel have no choice but to stay with their cruel and greedy Uncle in the slums of Westminster. Angelic Letitia is snatched away from her family by her father’s corrupt business partner, and Eliza and Frank are consigned to the workhouse. Rosey, the eldest, is devastated when she realises that she has no chance of keeping the promise she made to her dying mother: to take care of her brothers and sisters. She and George, starving and browbeaten, are struggling to survive themselves. In the Westminster Orphans series, we follow Rosey’s never-ending effort to find her missing siblings. We suffer with Rosey, George and Anabel as Rosey tries desperately to carry on her mother’s legacy. We walk in Eliza’s shoes while she grows thin and weak in the workhouse, and is then punished for the lies told by spiteful Daphne when the two of them are sent out into domestic service. We feel Tish’s loneliness as she tries to adapt to a house that has everything but love, and then descends into a life of horror just when she thinks she has escaped. We suffer the bullying and unfair punishment in the workhouse meted out to Frank and his only friend, Ginnie. All they want to do is escape and seek a better, more hopeful life. Instead, they are faced with the most dangerous work they can imagine: long days working in a cotton mill with an owner who cares only how much money he can make. It seems impossible that even worse is to come… yet it does… But through it all, the six Shaw orphans and their good friend Ginnie keep battling, keep hoping, and desperately hold on to fast-vanishing memories of a life worth living.

Book Synopsis Crossing Textual Boundaries in International Children’s Literature by : Lance Weldy
Download or read book Crossing Textual Boundaries in International Children’s Literature written by Lance Weldy and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “As the first part of the title indicates, my interest in looking at intertextuality and transformation still maintains a prominent place throughout this book as well. If we believe that ‘no text is an island,’ then we will understand that the relationships between and within texts across the years become a fascinating place for academic inquiry. I included the word ‘boundaries’ into the title because we never get tired of voicing our opinions about texts which traverse relegated boundaries, such as genre or medium. Not only am I interested in discussing what these changes across boundaries mean socially, historically, and culturally, but also what they mean geographically, which accounts for the second part of my title. “I am very excited that this book will be placing even more emphasis on children’s literature in an international scene than my first book did, in the sense that I have added more scholars on an international level. I hesitate to list the nationalities of all of the contributors here because quite a few have themselves crossed international boundaries in different ways, by either studying abroad or finding permanent residency in foreign countries. Nevertheless, the writers have lived extensively in or identify as being from Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United States of America, and Wales.” —Introduction
Book Synopsis Screen Media for Arab and European Children by : Naomi Sakr
Download or read book Screen Media for Arab and European Children written by Naomi Sakr and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses gaps in our understanding of processes that underpin the making and circulation of children's screen contents across the Arab region and Europe. Taking account of recent disruptive shifts in geopolitics that call for new thinking about how children’s media policy and production should proceed after large-scale forced migration in both regions, the book asks to what extent children in Europe and the Arab World are engaging with the same content. Who is funding new content and who is making it, according to whose criteria? Whose voices are loudest when it comes to pressures for regulation of children’s screen content, and what exactly do they want? The answers to these questions matter for anyone seeking insights into diverse cross-cultural collaborations and content innovations that are shaping new investment and production relationships.
Book Synopsis Children, Film and Literacy by : Becky Parry
Download or read book Children, Film and Literacy written by Becky Parry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children, Film and Literacy explores the role of film in children's lives. The films children engage in provide them with imaginative spaces in which they create, play and perform familiar and unfamiliar, fantasy and everyday narratives and this narrative play is closely connected to identity, literacy and textual practices. Family is key to the encouragement of this social play and, at school, the playground is also an important site for this activity. However, in the literacy classroom, some children encounter a discontinuity between their experiences of narrative at home and those that are valued in school. Through film children develop understandings of the common characteristics of narrative and the particular 'language' of film. This book demonstrates the ways in which children are able to express and develop distinct and complex understandings of narrative, that is to say, where they can draw on their own experiences (including those in a moving image form). Children whose primary experiences of narrative are moving images face particular challenges when their experiences are not given opportunities for expression in the classroom, and this has urgent implications for the teaching of literacy.
