It also highlights the skill, patience, and pictorial imagination of the many thousands of craftsmen and their patrons. The timeline runs for almost two thousand years, from the Buddhist stupa at Sanchi of the first century BC/AD to Rajput palace interiors of c. 1900. Hundreds of atmospheric photo- graphs are juxtaposed with graphic transpositions of the designs, patterns, and ornamentation to reveal the nature of the architectural detail, where stone, wood, mirror work, and plaster are transformed into masterworks of decorative art.

Book Synopsis The Topkapi Scroll by : Gülru Necipoğlu
Download or read book The Topkapi Scroll written by Gülru Necipoğlu and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since precious few architectural drawings and no theoretical treatises on architecture remain from the premodern Islamic world, the Timurid pattern scroll in the collection of the Topkapi Palace Museum Library is an exceedingly rich and valuable source of information. In the course of her in-depth analysis of this scroll dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, Gülru Necipoğlu throws new light on the conceptualization, recording, and transmission of architectural design in the Islamic world between the tenth and sixteenth centuries. Her text has particularly far-reaching implications for recent discussions on vision, subjectivity, and the semiotics of abstract representation. She also compares the Islamic understanding of geometry with that found in medieval Western art, making this book particularly valuable for all historians and critics of architecture. The scroll, with its 114 individual geometric patterns for wall surfaces and vaulting, is reproduced entirely in color in this elegant, large-format volume. An extensive catalogue includes illustrations showing the underlying geometries (in the form of incised “dead” drawings) from which the individual patterns are generated. An essay by Mohammad al-Asad discusses the geometry of the muqarnas and demonstrates by means of CAD drawings how one of the scroll’s patterns could be used co design a three-dimensional vault.
Book Synopsis Paradigms of Indian Architecture by : G. H. R. Tillotson
Download or read book Paradigms of Indian Architecture written by G. H. R. Tillotson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores conceptions of Indian architecture and how the historical buildings of the subcontinent have been conceived and described. Investigating the design philosophies of architects and styles of analysis by architectural historians, the book explores how systems of design and ideas about aesthetics have governed both the construction of buildings in India and their subsequent interpretation. How did the political directives of the British colonial period shape the manner in which pioneer archaeologists wrote the histories of India's buildings? How might such accounts conflict with indigenous ones, or with historical aesthetics? How might paintings of buildings by British and Indian artists suggest different ways of understanding their subjects? In what ways must we revise our conceptions of space and time to understand the narrative art which adorns India's most ancient monuments? These are among the questions addressed by the contributors to the volume.

Book excerpt: This work ventures to study Indian Art and Architecture with reference to, and in the context of, its theory which, though available to us in Sanskrit texts, is not generally studied and it is essentially a study of the Theory of SILPA (Indian Plastic Arts) from the Ancient to Medieval times. The first Chapter studies 'Mithuna' in the temple forum. Overwhelming textual prescriptions affirm that Devangana Mithuna sculptures both in Dance and Kama (Erotic) postures are incarnation of Srngara. Roct Cut Temple Architecture has been studied in the next chapter. A Saila Guha (Cave) is excavated into the living rock while a saila mandira is carved out of the Rock; independent and structural, it has all the four facades and a grand superstructure open to sky. another chapter is devoted to the study of sculptural aestheticism. Iconography prescribed the figure and its broad outlines, and sometimes the posture too with weapons and ornaments but it did not prescribe the depth of the sculpture in the third dimension, and the sculptor was free to bring out an expression. The chapter on Lahara Vallari is study of a formal ornament in Indian Art. It has no floral element and it rises and falls like wave and moves forth with exquisite grace like a sinuous scroll. The Chapter on the Inter relationship of the Performing and the Plastic Arts is devoted to the study of non iconographic devangana sculptures. The last chapter deals with lotus fountain of the Rang Mahal Red Fort DELHI of Shah Jehan 1628-58 A.D, which is unique creation of Indian Sculptor during the Medieval Period. Its petals appear to rise and fall when water ripples on their edges like a magical charisma.
