Book Synopsis Episcopal Elections 250-600 by : Peter Norton
Download or read book Episcopal Elections 250-600 written by Peter Norton and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-02-22 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Norton covers a topic of great relevance to students of early Church history and late antiquity alike. He challenges the conventional view that after the adoption of Christianity by the Roman empire the local community lost its voice in the appointment of bishops, and argues that this right remained in theory and practice for longer than is normally assumed. Given that bishops became important to the running of the empire at the local level, a proper understanding of how they came into office is essential for our understanding of the later empire.
Book Synopsis Electing Our Bishops by : Joseph O'Callaghan
Download or read book Electing Our Bishops written by Joseph O'Callaghan and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2007-03-09 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one become a bishop in the Catholic Church? Electing our Bishops: How the Catholic Church Should Choose Its Leaders explains how history, politics, and religious tradition converge to produce the episcopacy. The book gives an historical overview from the earliest times when bishops were elected by the clergy and people of the diocese to the present day where they are normally appointed by the pope. In light of the current clergy sexual abuse scandal, many distinguished theologians, canonists, and church historians have called for greater popular participation in the selection of bishops, and Electing our Bishops discusses ideas for new forms of election that involve both clergy and laity. This book is an important tool for Catholics who want to understand the history and process of the election of bishops as well as how the process might change in the future.

Book Synopsis The Legacy of Demetrius of Alexandria 189-232 CE by : Maged Mikhail
Download or read book The Legacy of Demetrius of Alexandria 189-232 CE written by Maged Mikhail and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of Demetrius of Alexandria (189–232 ce), who generated a neglected, yet remarkable hagiographic program that secured him a positive legacy throughout the Middle Ages and the modern era. Drawing upon Patristic, Coptic, and Arabic sources spanning a millennium, the analysis contextualizes the Demetrian corpus at its various stages of composition and presents the totality of his hagiographic corpus in translation. This volume constitutes a definitive study of Demetrius, but more broadly, it provides a clearly delineated hagiographic program and charts its evolution against a backdrop of political developments and intercommunal interactions. This fascinating study is a useful resource for students of Demetrius and the Church in Egypt in this period, but also for anyone working on Early Christianity and hagiography more generally.

Book Synopsis A History of the Christian Church: From the Earliest Times to A.D. 461 by : F. J. Foakes-Jackson
Download or read book A History of the Christian Church: From the Earliest Times to A.D. 461 written by F. J. Foakes-Jackson and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of long truces and temporary agreements, Christianity and the State had become two rival powers striving for the mastery of the world, and until the close of the final contest under Diocletian there could be no real peace between them. The Church was herself fully prepared for the struggle. During the first century of her existence she had perfected her organization, and her leaders, the bishops, had obtained unquestioned authority. -from "The Conquest of Heathenism by Christianity: A.D. 161-A.D. 313" With equal measures of reverence and erudition, this classic 1891 history of Christianity offers a succinct survey of the Church, from its pre-Christian foundations in Israel through its ascendency to an absolute force for cultural and religious power during the Dark Ages. In crisp, readable prose, Foakes-Jackson, a respected and prolific Biblical scholar, discusses: -how Jewish synagogues forged the path to churches -the rise of the family of Herod -the societal impact of Jesus during his lifetime -the work of the apostles in the decades after the Crucifixion -clashes between the Roman government and the Church -the origins and principles of Gnosticism -Christian thought in the early centuries of the Church -the organization of the Church -the influence of Constantine -and much more. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Foakes-Jackson's A Brief Biblical History: Old Testament. British theologian FREDERICK JOHN FOAKES-JACKSON (1855-1941) was a fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge, and a professor of Christian institutions at New York City's Union Theological Seminary. Among his many works are An Introduction to the History of Christianity, A.D. 590-1314 (1921), Josephus and theJews: The Religion and History of the Jews as Explained by Flavius Josephus (1930), and Peter: Prince of Apostles: A Study in the History and Tradition of Christianity (1927).

Book Synopsis The Rise of Bishops by : David W. T. Brattston
Download or read book The Rise of Bishops written by David W. T. Brattston and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of Bishops reveals how Christian congregations, which were self-governing in the second and third centuries, became subject to the general supervision and direction of diocesan bishops and higher officeholders, thus ending their independence from outside the local parish. The New Testament says nothing about church government after the apostles. Thus, the question becomes “who replaced the apostles?” Local church congregations in the period between AD 100 to 300 appear to have been administered by bishops and deacons, and sometimes elders, all as congregational officeholders, with no superstructure above the congregation. Yet, the fourth century sees congregations governed in groups by a collective hierarchy, based on diocesan bishops. This book attributes most of the change to Constantine the Great and his immediate successors, motivated by desire for more efficient functioning and greater control by the emperors once the majority church was co-opted into the Roman state. Although bishops have long been key officials in the church, surprisingly little has been written in our time on how the framework for choosing and regulating them developed in early times. What little is available consists of journal articles rather than standalone publications. The Rise of Bishops helps close this gap.
