It contains a selection of the papers prepared by the members for the monthly meetings; and in laying before a larger audience of scholars these results of studies conducted in various fields, the Club hopes to make a modest contribution to Oriental philology and archaeology. The papers are published in the order in which they were received by the Publication Committee. Each author contributing to this volume assumes the responsibility for his views. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty Years of Oriental Studies: Issued in Commemoration of Thirty Years of Activity of the Oriental Club of Philadelphia In the spring of 1888, Messrs. Trumbull, Lyman, Peters, Jastrow, Jr., Hilprecht, Hopkins, Williams and Culin issued an invitation to a number of scholars living in Philadelphia and in the vicinity, to meet for the purpose of forming a local Oriental Club. This meeting took place on April 30 of that year, at the home of Dr. Williams, 1833 Spruce Street, and was attended by 20 scholars: the signers of the call, and Messrs. Baba, Board man, Easton, Garrison, Harris, Jastrow, Sr., Law, McCauley, Myer, Rogers, Stronach and Sulzberger. Dr. Trumbull was elected chairman, Mr. Culin served as secretary, and Dr. Peters spoke informally upon "The Proposed University of Pennsylvania Expedition to Babylonia." A brief constitution was adopted, and thus the Oriental Club of Philadelphia came into being. Those present, and three others (Messrs. Adler, Goodell and Haupt, who were invited to the meeting and could not attend), were considered to be the foundation members. Since that time there has been an unbroken series of meetings, six to ten in each academic year, the thirtieth anniversary meeting being the 205th meeting; and in this time, sixty Orientalists, including two ladies, have accepted election to the Club, in addition to the twenty-three founders. The active membership list, at the end of the thirty years, included thirty-three names. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Study of Oriental Languages and Literature In explanation of the form of the following Discourse, it is requisite to state, that it was designed, in substance at least, to be read in the University of Edinburgh, at the opening of the session 1847-8, as introductory to a course of study in "Hebrew and other Oriental Languages," of which the Author had been appointed Professor. He was precluded, however, from performing this or any other official function by an enforcement of the University Tests; which have been in abeyance here, for nearly a century, though now and then voluntarily complied with; but which were revived in this case, as they were on a well-known occasion in 1804, and as they may be at intervals hereafter. As it was generally expected that they would soon be brought under the notice of the Legislature, he retained his commission, with the concurrence of the Patrons, till the approach of the present session of College. He then sent in his resignation; and, of course, the introductory Lecture now published was never delivered in the place for which it was intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oriental Studies: Being a Selection of Papers Read by the Members of the Oriental Seminary of the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD., At the Annual Meeting of the American Oriental Society, Held in New York, April, 1901 Nor have Semitic scholars, as a rule, taken the trouble to study my treatise on the Semitic sounds and their transliteration, pub lished eleven years ago in the first part of the Johns Hopkins Contributions to Assyriology and Comparative Semitic Philol ogy.l There are, however, a few notable exceptions. The dis tinguished Egyptologist of the University of Leipzig and editor of Baedeker's E ypt, Professor Steindorff, one of my first students in the University of ttingen, has evidently studied my phonetic researches for the phonology of his Coptic Grammarfand the well known Arabist, Count Landberg (two of whose magnificent col lections, comprising valuable Arabic (persian and Turkish) manuscripts, have recently been presented to Yale and Princeton) told me, at the last Oriental Congress, held in Rome in 1899, that he had found my phonetic researches very helpful for his studies in Arabic dialectology; and a few days ago Professor Eduard Sievers, of Leipzig, sent me the first part of his elaborate work on Hebrew Metrics, s which will have a most wholesome effect on the current ideas of Hebrew poetry. He states there in his pho nological introduction (p. 14, n. 1) that he agrees on all essential points with my views concerning the Semitic consonants. Sievers' treatise on Hebrew meters, which is a wonderful piece of work in view of the fact that he is not a Hebraist but a Germanic scholar (although he had the assistance of some distinguished Semitists like Socin, Kautsch, and Buhl), will probably give a new impetus to phonetic studies among Semitic scholars, and I hope the next edition of Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar, which will be issued in the course of this year, will eliminate several time-honored errors in the domain of Semitic phonetics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Lord Shang was probably compiled sometime between 359 and 338 BCE. Along with the Han Fei-Tzu, it is one of the two principal sources of Legalism, a school of Chinese political thought. Legalism asserts that human behavior must be controlled through written law, rather than ritual, custom or ethics, because people are innately selfish and ignorant. The law is not effective when it is based on goodness or virtue; it is effective when it compels obedience. This is essential to preserve the stability of the State. Reprint of Volume XVII in Probsthain's Oriental Series. With a Chinese index and an index of names and references. "The Book of Lord Shang or Shang-tzu is said to consist of 29 paragraphs, of which the text for nos. 16, 21, 27, 28 and 29 being no longer extant. The translation of Prof. Duyvendak therefore covers only twenty-four paragraphs and is based on an edition published by Yang Wan-li in 1793, which was reprinted by the Ch -chiang-shu-ch in 1876 in the "Collection of Twenty-two Philosophers." Of all the editions published before or after that date, this is the best known. (...) The Chinese text of the Book, like many other ancient writings, is obscure in some parts and corrupt in others. (...) The reviewer is therefore forcibly struck by the faithfulness, definiteness and clearness of Dr. Duyvendak's translation." --13 Chinese Soc. & Pol. Sci. Rev. 459-460, 462 1929. J.J.L. Duyvendak 1889-1954] was an interpreter for the Dutch embassy in Peking from 1912-1918. In 1919 he became a lecturer in Chinese at the University of Leiden. He was the author of China's Discovery of Africa; Lectures Given at the University of London on January 22 and 23, 1947 (1949) and edited and translated several works, including The Diary of His Excellency Ching-shan; Being a Chinese Account of the Boxer Troubles by Shan Jing (1924). He established the Sinological Institute at the University of Leiden in 1930. It is now one of the leading libraries for Chinese Studies in the Western world.
