Book excerpt: Due to changes in the learning and research environment, changes in the behavior of library users, and unique global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic, libraries have had to adapt and evolve to remain up-to-date and responsive to their users. Thus, libraries are adding new, digital resources and services while maintaining most of the old, traditional resources and services. New areas of research and inquiry in the field of library and information science explore the applications of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other technologies to better serve and expand the library community. The Handbook of Research on Knowledge and Organization Systems in Library and Information Science examines new technologies and systems and their application and adoption within libraries. This handbook provides a global perspective on current and future trends concerning library and information science. Covering topics such as machine learning, library management, ICTs, blockchain technology, social media, and augmented reality, this book is essential for librarians, library directors, library technicians, media specialists, data specialists, catalogers, information resource officers, administrators, IT consultants and specialists, academicians, and students.

Book excerpt: From businesses, public administrations, universities and schools, to hospitals, prisons, political parties, or the military, peoples’ lives are inextricably bound up with organizations from cradle to grave. Yet we receive little training in how - as members, customers, voters, or patients - to deal with them. In Organizations Stefan Kühl asks and answers many questions. What are these entities that wield such strong influence in our society? What makes them tick? What are our options for intervening, either from within or without? This book explains how organizations function by examining their three central features: their purposes or goals, their hierarchies, and their memberships. The author presents the three aspects of organizations - the display, formal, and informal aspects, explaining them in metaphorical terms as façades, machines, and games. Acknowledging that the seminal systems theory developed by sociologist Niklas Luhmann is not easily accessible, Professor Kühl presents Luhmann’s organizational concept in a succinct and user-friendly form that will be readily grasped by a practitioner audience and provides new insights in this ambitious theory.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, there have been many reports about the success and failure of investments in ICT and information systems. Failures in particular have drawn a lot of attention. The outcome of the implementation of information and communication systems has often been disastrous. Recent research does not show that results have improved. This raises the question why so many ICT projects perform so badly. Information, Organization and Information Systems Design: An Integrated Approach to Information Problems aims at discussing measures to improve the results of information systems. Bart Prakken identifies various factors that explain the shortfall of information systems. Subsequently, he provides a profound discussion of the measures that can be taken to remove the causes of failure. When organizations are confronted with information problems, they will almost automatically look for ICT solutions. However, Prakken argues that more fundamental and often cheaper solutions are in many cases available. When looking for solutions to information problems, the inter-relationship between organization, information and the people within the organization should explicitly be taken into account. The measures that the author proposes are based on organizational redesign, particularly using the sociotechnical approach. In cases where ICT solutions do have to be introduced, Prakken discusses a number of precautionary measures that will help their implementation. The book aims to contribute to the scientific debate on how to solve information problems, and can be used in graduate and postgraduate courses. It is also helpful to managers.

It describes a process that leads from fuzzy, ill-defined requirements to requirements that can be modeled and prototyped. Managing Systems Requirements presents methods for communicating requirements and achieving buy-in from system users and owners before expensive programming begins. There are techniques, tools, and software suggestions for project managers and systems analysts, plus case studies that illustrate how the whole requirements gathering process works. The cornerstone of the book is its practicality: it combines in one place a suite of methods, templates, off-the-shelf computer-based tools, and real-world examples that software developers can use to get a handle on software requirements and solve the problems they face every day on the job. IS managers, system project managers, systems analysts, and programmers will find the book indispensable and value how it integrates technical methods with organizational realities.
