Unternehmenskultur“ insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund einer globalen Weltwirtschaft zur Erklärung schwer greifbarer Eigenheiten von Unternehmen durchsetzen können. Gleichzeitig mangelt es jedoch an einer einheitlichen, konkreten Definition. Stand bei den ersten wissenschaftlichen, praktischen Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Kulturvergleich japanischer und amerikanischer Unternehmen Anfang der 80er Jahre noch die Vorstellung im Vordergrund, Unternehmenskulturen seien der Schlüssel zum Erfolg internationaler Konzerne und schlicht kopierbar, hat sich heute die Erkenntnis durchgesetzt, daß die Kultur eines Unternehmens in den Köpfen der Mitarbeiter verankert ist. Kulturveränderungsprozesse müssen daher tiefer als bei den sichtbaren Ausprägungen von Kultur ansetzen. Der Organisationskultur kommt he ute eine große Bedeutung insbesondere in multinationalen Unternehmen und bei Unternehmensfusionen zu. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich vor diesem Hintergrund mit der Kultur von Unternehmen und den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen kultureller Veränderung. Dazu zieht sich zwei „rote Fäden“ durch die Ausarbeitung. Zum einen sollen die wesentlichen Erkenntnisse der Unternehmenskulturforschung dargelegt werden. Zum anderen soll anhand realer Beispiele die Bedeutung und Durchsetzbarkeit von Unternehmenskulturveränderungen überprüft werden. Zunächst ist dazu eine Abgrenzung der Begriffe Kultur und Organisation sowie ein Blick auf die Entstehung der Diskussion erforderlich, die in Kapitel zwei und drei vorgenommen wird. Darauf aufbauend, wird im Kapitel vier das oft zitierte Kulturmodell nach Edgar Schein erörtert und kritisch betrachtet. Kapitel fünf beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung von Subkulturen innerhalb eines Unternehmens, insbesondere mit der exponierten Stellung der Manager und deren Einfluss auf die Kulturprägung. Die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von kulturellen Veränderungen sollen in Kapitel sechs zunächst allgemein, und dann speziell bei Fusionen aufgezeigt werden. Kapitel sieben fasst schließlich die wesentlichen Ergebnisse zusammen und gibt einen Ausblick auf die möglichen zukünftigen Problemstellungen kultureller Anpassungen in Unternehmen.
