Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic poultry production has increased significantly in recent years to keep up with increasing consumer demand for organic eggs and meat. There are many guidelines and restrictions on what should go into the feedstuffs of organically farmed poultry, from which difficulties arise when trying to ensure a well-balanced nutritious diet without the use of any unapproved supplements. This, the second edition of Robert Blair's classic and bestselling book on the nutrition and feeding of organic poultry, presents advice for organic producers, and the agencies and organizations serving them. It covers: - selecting suitable ingredients; - preparing appropriate feed mixtures and integrating them into organic poultry production systems; - international standards of organic feeding; - breeds that are most suitable for organic farming; - examples of diets formulated to organic standards. Completely updated and revised to address how to formulate organic diets in situations where there is a declining supply of organic feed, this new edition also includes up-to-date information on the nutritional requirements of poultry and feed-related disease incidence in organic flocks. Also including the feasibility of utilizing novel feedstuffs, such as insect meal, and their acceptability by consumers of organic meat products, this book forms a comprehensive reference for students and researchers of poultry science, organic farmers and veterinarians.

The focus of this study is on businesses that might choose to adopt organic poultry production, as well as free-range producers who might wish to convert to full organic standards. It is assumed that organic poultry production systems are unlikely to result from the conversion of intensive conventional poultry units

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sustainable and all-encompassing method of growing chickens that puts an emphasis on human health, environmental sustainability, and animal welfare is known as organic poultry farming. We will examine the essential ideas, advantages, and difficulties of raising organic poultry in this chapter. 1.1 What is farming poultry organically? Raising chickens, ducks, turkeys, and other poultry species in conformity with organic standards and principles is known as organic poultry farming. The use of synthetic chemicals, antibiotics, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and other artificial inputs in the manufacturing process is usually prohibited by these regulations. Rather, to enhance the health and welfare of their birds, organic poultry producers depend on natural and organic means. 1.2 Organic Poultry Farming Principles Several fundamental ideas underpin organic chicken farming: 1.2.1 Care for Animals: For organic poultry producers, the well-being, comfort, and instinctive behavior of their birds come first. They provide the flock plenty of room to roam about, access to the outside world, and hygienic living arrangements to guarantee their wellbeing. 1.2.2 Care of the Environment: The focus of organic poultry production is on environmentally friendly, sustainable methods. This entails lowering pollution, preserving resources, and fostering biodiversity in the agricultural setting. 1.2.3 Organic Sources: To maintain the health and immunity of their birds, organic chicken producers employ natural inputs including probiotics, herbal supplements, and organic feed. They stay away from using growth accelerators, herbicides, and artificial chemicals. 1.3 Advantages of Raising Organic Poultry There are several advantages to raising chickens organically for customers, farmers, and the environment. 1.3.1 Product Healthier: Because organic chicken products don't include artificial chemicals or antibiotics, eating them is safer and healthier. Additionally, they often include greater levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids among other nutrients. 1.3.2 Preservation of the Environment: Soil, water, and air quality are protected by organic poultry farming, which prioritizes sustainable techniques. It encourages biodiversity on the farm and lessens the need for chemical inputs. 1.3.3 Care for Animals: Birds raised at organic chicken farms are given a more compassionate and natural environment, which reduces stress and enables them to display their natural behaviors. 1.3.4 Need in the Market: The market for organic poultry products is expanding as a result of increased consumer knowledge of the advantages organic goods provide for their health and the environment. Farmers of organic poultry now have the chance to sell their produce at exclusive marketplaces and for a higher price.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive study of poultry meat safety offers readers the most up-to-date information on food safety concerns in poultry meat production. Chapters address recent topics of interest such as organic poultry production, antimicrobial resistant pathogens in poultry, antibiotic usage in poultry production, and pre- and post- harvest approaches to improving poultry meat safety. The last couple of decades have observed a significant increase in poultry meat production in the US. However, poultry meat is a potential source of foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter spp. and pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC linked to human infections), leading to economic losses to the poultry industry and impacting public health. Advances in knowledge in microbiology, molecular biology, immunology and “omics” fields have intensified efforts to improve the microbiological safety of poultry by targeting virulence mechanisms of the pathogens, developing vaccines and improving gut health in chickens. Moreover, due to the emergence of multidrug resistance in poultry-borne pathogens, and growth of organic poultry production, there exists significant interest for developing natural strategies for controlling pathogens in chickens. This edited volume provides insight into these strategies and covers other material of interest to food microbiologists, public health personnel, and poultry scientists. Readers of various backgrounds will appreciate its incorporation of recent developments not covered in other publications on the subject.

There is absolutely no country in the world, except perhaps the Arctic regions, – where man has not reared ducks, chickens and other poultry for table purposes down the centuries. Apart from these being an easy source of eggs to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, you also knew that you would have a tough old rooster for dinner, when a large number of family members popped in unexpectedly, demanding sustenance. We are going to be concentrating on chicken farming, for domestic purposes in this book. You have this dream of raising chickens in your backyard. You are interested in a continuous supply of eggs, and the occasional chicken for your pot of a Sunday. Layers are those chickens, which are normally raised for egg production. The chickens which are going to go straight into the pot are called broilers. Since ancient times, human beings have been raising poultry for domestic purposes and also for marketing purposes. Poultry farming has been a part of rural life in the east down the centuries. All the kitchen waste was fed to the hens. These hens came under the 21st century poultry farming term – free ranging. That meant they were allowed to scratch about in the backyard, getting their fill of insects, worms, green vegetables, organic matter, and was it a wonder that they laid delicious, nutritious, and proteinaceous eggs? Every intelligent householder kept three or four hens depending on the size of his family, and he bought a cock from the market, when he needed chickens. Once a clutch of chickens was hatched, Cocky Locky went into the cook pot. One of the common mistakes made by new poultry farmers is buying a large number of birds, because they are not very clear about whether they want these words for home consumption or they want to trade in the eggs and poultry meat. Around 50 years ago, one of my father’s colleagues was facing this problem. He had this huge garden and backyard. He had heard about dad rearing poultry in that garden successfully. So he also wanted to experiment in this exciting new activity which would keep his family well supplied with eggs, and fresh meat. So the next time dad went visiting to his base on a tour, he asked dad the best way to raise birds without too much of a hassle. You are going to get these easy tips in the book.
