Book Synopsis Experiments, Models, Paper Tools by : Ursula Klein
Download or read book Experiments, Models, Paper Tools written by Ursula Klein and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, chemistry emerged in Europe as a truly experimental discipline. What set this process in motion, and how did it evolve? Experimentalization in chemistry was driven by a seemingly innocuous tool: the sign system of chemical formulas invented by the Swedish chemist Jacob Berzelius. By tracing the history of this “paper tool,” the author reveals how chemistry quickly lost its orientation to natural history and became a major productive force in industrial society. These formulas were not merely a convenient shorthand, but productive tools for creating order amid the chaos of early nineteenth-century organic chemistry. With these formulas, chemists could create a multifaceted world on paper, which they then correlated with experiments and the traces produced in test tubes and flasks. The author’s semiotic approach to the formulas allows her to show in detail how their particular semantic and representational qualities made them especially useful as paper tools for productive application.
Book Synopsis Green Organic Chemistry by : Kenneth M. Doxsee

The level and writing style of the text, which emphasizes biochemical and biomedical applications, make it ideally suited for the mainstream organic chemistry laboratory. A student CD-ROM includes videos and photos related to the material in the text. Videos feature the exact glassware required for each experiment and demonstrate techniques for how to conduct experiments successfully and safely. Photos show lab equipment set-ups. "In this Experiment" is a new feature that appears before every microscale experiment. It presents the objective of the experiment and keeps students from getting bogged down in the minute details of experimental procedures. An instructor web site provides a forum where instructors can communicate directly with the text author about specific experiments and the implementation of microscale techniques. The site also includes PDF files from the Instructor's Resource Manual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the initial observation of proton magnetic resonance in water and in paraffin, the discipline of nuclear magnetic resonance has seen unparalleled growth as an analytical method. Modern NMR spectroscopy is a highly developed, yet still evolving, subject which finds application in chemistry, biology, medicine, materials science and geology. In this book, emphasis is on the more recently developed methods of solution-state NMR applicable to chemical research, which are chosen for their wide applicability and robustness. These have, in many cases, already become established techniques in NMR laboratories, in both academic and industrial establishments. A considerable amount of information and guidance is given on the implementation and execution of the techniques described in this book.

This book was released on 1996-11-26 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence - or absence - of soil organic matter (SOM) has important implications for agricultural productivity. It could also have significant implications for global climate due to its role as a source/sink of carbon. Therefore, it is important to understand the issues related to the accumulation or loss of SOM, to use what we have learned from experiments to make sound decisions about soil and crop management, and to test models and future concepts concerning SOM management. A database is included with the book, presenting tabular data for 34 sites in North America. Soil Organic Matter in Temperate Agroecosystems discusses all of these issues and more, answering such questions as:
