Book Synopsis Die "andere" Reformation im Alten Reich / The "other" Reformation in the Old Empire by : Jan van de Kamp

This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [The "other" Reformation in the Old Empire. Bremen and North-West Europe] The history of the Reformation in the city of Bremen differs from many other Reformation processes in the Old Empire. Yet it has hardly been addressed, not even in the decade of lively commemoration of the Reformation. Bremen's was a "different" Reformation in comparison with similar developments in the "core territories" of the Reformation, as well as in the cities. In the first, Lutheran, phase of Bremen's Reformation, many aspects were similar to those elsewhere: the groundbreaking ideas, which were legitimated by reference to the Word of God, as codified in Holy Scripture; anticlericalism; provocative stances; violence and appeasement. From about 1550 onwards, however, Bremen's Reformation proceeded towards a more uncompromising second phase. The aim of this volume is to give Bremen its due within the field of Reformation research.
Book Synopsis T&T Clark Handbook of Anabaptism by : Brian C. Brewer
Download or read book T&T Clark Handbook of Anabaptism written by Brian C. Brewer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-30 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By utilizing the contributions of a variety of scholars – theologians, historians, and biblical scholars – this book makes the complex and sometimes disparate Anabaptist movement more easily accessible. It does this by outlining Anabaptism's early history during the Reformation of the sixteenth century, its varied and distinctive theological convictions, and its ongoing challenges to and influence on contemporary Christianity. T&T Clark Handbook of Anabaptism comprises four sections: 1) Origins, 2) Doctrine, 3) Influences on Anabaptism, and 4) Contemporary Anabaptism and Relationship to Others. The volume concludes with a chapter on how contemporary Anabaptists interact with the wider Church in all its variety. While some of the authorities within the volume will disagree even with one another regarding Anabaptist origins, emphases on doctrine, and influence in the contemporary world, such differences represent the diversity that constitutes the history of this movement.

Book Synopsis Stripping the Veil by : Marjorie Elizabeth Plummer
Download or read book Stripping the Veil written by Marjorie Elizabeth Plummer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protestant nuns and mixed-confessional convents are an unexpected anomaly in early modern Germany. According to sixteenth-century evangelical reformers' theological positions outlined in their publications and reform-minded rulers' institutional efforts, monastic life in Protestant regions should have ended by the mid-sixteenth century. Instead, many convent congregations exhibiting elements of traditional and evangelical practices in Protestant regions survived into the seventeenth century and beyond. How did these convents survive? What is a Protestant nun? How many convent congregations came to house nuns with diverse belief systems and devotional practices, and how did they live and worship together? These questions lead to surprising answers. Stripping the Veil explores the daily existence, ritual practices, and individual actions of nuns in surviving convents over time against the backdrop of changing political and confessional circumstances in Protestant regions. It also demonstrates how incremental shifts in practice and belief led to the emergence of a complex, often locally constructed, devotional life. This continued presence of nuns and the survival of convents in Protestant cities and territories of the German-speaking parts of the Holy Roman Empire is evidence of a more complex lived experience of religious reform, devotional practice, and confessional accommodation than traditional histories of early modern Christianity would indicate. The internal differences and the emerging confessional hybridity, blending, and fluidity also serve as a caution about designating a nun or groups of nuns as Lutheran, Catholic, or Reformed, or even more broadly as Protestant or Catholic during the sixteenth century.

Book Synopsis Convent Music and Politics in Eighteenth-Century Vienna by : Janet K. Page
Download or read book Convent Music and Politics in Eighteenth-Century Vienna written by Janet K. Page and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janet K. Page explores the interaction of music and piety, court and church, as seen through the relationship between the Habsburg court and Vienna's convents. For a period of some twenty-five years, encompassing the end of the reign of Emperor Leopold I and that of his elder son, Joseph I, the court's emphasis on piety and music meshed perfectly with the musical practices of Viennese convents. This mutually beneficial association disintegrated during the eighteenth century, and the changing relationship of court and convents reveals something of the complex connections among the Habsburg court, the Roman Catholic Church, and Viennese society. Identifying and discussing many musical works performed in convents, including oratorios, plays with music, feste teatrali, sepolcri, and other church music, Page reveals a golden age of convent music in Vienna and sheds light on the convents' surprising engagement with contemporary politics.
Book Synopsis Queens, Princesses and Mendicants by : Nikolas Jaspert
Download or read book Queens, Princesses and Mendicants written by Nikolas Jaspert and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decades between ca 1280 and ca 1380 were marked by a striking affinity to the Mendicant orders on the part of many female members of royal and princely courts. And yet, "Queens, Princesses and Mendicants" is both an innovative and comparatively neglected juxtaposition in medieval studies, for historical research has generally tended to neglect the relationship between Mendicants and aristocratic women. This volume unites twelve articles written by experts from seven European countries. The contributions cover a wide array of medieval European kingdoms in order to facilitate direct comparisons. Was affinity towards the Mendicants a prevalent phenomenon in the late Middle Ages? Can one even term "philomendicantism" a late medieval European movement? The collection of essays provides answers to these and other questions within the field of gender, religious and cultural history.

With recourse to the available secondary literature and a wealth of primary sources, this book shows how the early history of the Poor Clares cannot be reduced to Franciscan initiatives, and that the institutionalization of the order was characterized by prolonged conflicts and a series of important papal interventions. The work also provides insight in the expansion of the order, the complexities of religious reforms, and the significant cultural production of the women involved.
Book Synopsis Kulturelle Wirkungen der Reformation / Cultural Impact of the Reformation by : Klaus Fitschen
Download or read book Kulturelle Wirkungen der Reformation / Cultural Impact of the Reformation written by Klaus Fitschen and published by Evangelische Verlagsanstalt. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The Reformation not only changed theology and the church, but set in motion a fundamental transformation, which encompassed every aspect of society. Thus, Protestantism had an enduring influence on social structures, patterns of perception, normative ideas, scientific concepts, scopes for artistic expression and cultural identities. The announced proceedings document the international and interdisciplinary congress "Cultural Impacts of the Reformation" held in August 2017 by the universities of Halle-Wittenberg, Jena and Leipzig at the LEUCOREA Foundation in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The contributions – amongst others by Udo Sträter, Charlotte Methuen, Martin Heckel, Herman Selderhuis, Rudolf von Sinner, Daniel Jeyaraj und Jochen Hörisch – show precisely both the ways the Protestant confessional milieus have been influential for 500 years and how they themselves have reacted to cultural challenges.

Book Synopsis Anticlericalism in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe by :
Download or read book Anticlericalism in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally anticlericalism has been regarded as a significant historical factor, by some historians even as the unifying focal point for the host of movements known as the Reformation of the sixteenth century. In forty-one essays eminent historians of culture, religion, and society redefine and redirect the debate regarding the scope and impact of European anticlericalism during the period 1300-1700. The meaning of reform and resentment is here clearly articulated and the sentiments are analyzed which were directed first against all levels of the Roman hierarchy and later as well against the evangelical pastor. Using sources drawn from a wide variety of city and village archives, of literary genres and theological tracts, the articles presented here uncover the clusters of reform hope and bitter resentment directed toward parish priest, monk, bishop and pope, in addition to the early Protestant clergy. The volume highlights the continuity and discontinuity of anticlerical passion, language, goals and actions between the late medieval and Reformation periods.
