Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oratory and Orators The French philosopher, d'alembert, goes so far as to say of eloquence, that the prodigies which it often works, in the hands of a single man, upon an entire nation, are perhaps the most shining testimony of the superiority of one man over another and Emerson expresses a simi lar opinion when he says that eloquence is the appro priate organ of the highest personal energy. As there is no effort of the human mind which demands a rarer combination of faculties than does oratory in its loftiest ights, so there is no human effort which is rewarded with more immediate or more dazzling triumphs. The philosopher in his closet, the statesman in his cabinet, the general in the tented field, may produce more lasting effects upon human affairs, but their in uence is both more slowly felt, and less intoxicating from the ascend ancy it confers. The orator is not compelled to wait through long and weary years to reap the reward of his labors. His triumphs are instantaneous; they follow his efforts as the thunder-peal follows the lightning's ash. While he is in the very act of forming his sentences, his triumph is re ected from the countenances of his hearers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Golden Age of American Oratory Although the Revolutionary orators ushered in this Golden Age of our Eloquence, no attempt has been made to describe them; because such a de scription now must be, at best, only a second-hand copy of their traditionary lineaments. Many of the illustrative remarks and conversa tions alluded to in this volume, especially of Mr. Clay, Mr. Webster, and Mr. Choate, were expressed directly to the author, or in his presence, by these gentlemen. He has not, however, thought it worth while to particularize these instances in the text; except where an important principle is asserted by such eminent authorities, or an important historical fact is narrated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Irish Orators and Oratory Every anthologist, even the worst, is in the afflicting position of that antique sophist, the fore-runner of all the tribe of company-promoters, who spent so much of his life trying to sell a house on the basis of a specimen brick. In the region of poetry which is, of its very nature, an exaltation, as brief as it is intense, he may avoid abject failure. In prose literature, too, the prospector may hope to come upon passages, quintessential and yet true to type, which can be broken off from the central mass without losing their character. Your author and worker in print has this further advantage: he writes for the individual, and the spiritual values in which he trades are, if not universal, at least partly stripped of localism and transience. But oratory is, by contrast, complex, diffuse, netted beyond release in impermanent details. Its triumph is of the moment, momentary. Some works give the precepts alone, but not the complete illustrations, others supply the orations, but do not indicate how they were formed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhetoric of Oratory There is no modern text-book, so far as the author is aware, which covers the same ground as the present volume. The treatment covers all forms of public discourse, but the point of view is that of formal oratory; the assumption always is that one has time to write out in full a set speech for a more or less formal occasion. Of course the formal ora tion is only one of many kinds of public speeches; indeed, with the average speaker, it may be com paratively rare, but it is only by the systematic study and practice of the rhetoric of oratory that the stu dent can best train himself generally for all kinds of public speaking. Such foundation work in written composition is absolutely essential to appreciate and cultivate the oratorical style and to guard against the prolix and discursive tendencies of extempore speech. The science and art of oratory was so comprehen sively and exhaustively treated by the ancient Greek and Roman rhetoricians that, as John Quincy Adams said in his address accepting the professorship of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard, to select, com bine, and apply their precepts is the only duty left for their followers of all succeeding times, and to obtain a perfect familiarity with their instruction is to arrive at a mastery of the art. A new treatise on oratory, therefore, can be little more than themodernizing of old material - the modern application of principles elaborately wrought out by such writers as Aristotle, Cicero, and Quintilian. The author would not underrate his indebtedness to some of the modern treatises (cited in the text), but for the most part the present treatise simply aims to adapt ancient precepts to present-day conditions, supplementing theory with suggestive exercises and considerable illustrative matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cicero on Oratory and Orators, Vol. 2 of 2: With Notes Historical and Explanatory Of wise and virtuous citizens, this excellent man, my faithful associate in the service of the pub lic, expired at the very time when the com monwealth could least spare him, and when we had the greatest reason to regret the want of his prudence and authority. I can add, very sincerely, that in him I lamented the loss, not (as most people imagined) of a dan gerons rival who Opposed my reputation, but of a generous associate who engaged with me in the pursuit of fame. For if we have Instances in history, though in studies of less impor tance, that some distinguished poets have been greatly afflicted at the death of their contem porary bards; with what tender concern should I honour the memory of a man, with whom it is more glorious to have disputed the prize of eloquence, than never to have combated as an antagonist! Especially, as he was always so far from obstructing my endeavours, or I his, that, on the contrary, we mutually assisted each other with our credit and advice. But as he, who had a perpetual run of felicity, left the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Our faith in the justness of the first conviction, is founded on the fact that the instance is exceeding rare in which history, with her impartial pen, has recorded, or tradition, with its authentic voice, has reported, an example of any person failing to grasp the palm of eloquence, who aspired to it with a perseverance which never faltered, and who was endowed by nature with powers of a respectable grade. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of Oratory, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 6 of 15: With Critical Studies of the World's Great Orators by Eminent Essayists As much must be said of history and philosophy. The philosopher speaks and writes. Can he, then, like the orator, find accents which make truth enter the soul; colors and forms that make it shine forth evident and manifest to the eyes of intelligence? It would be betray ing his cause to neglect the means that can serve it; but the profoundest art is here only a means, the aim of phil osophy is elsewhere; whence it follows that philosophy; is not an art. Without doubt, Plato is a great artist; he is the peer of Sophocles and Phidias, as Pascal is some times the rival of Demosthenes and Bossuet; but both would have blushed if they had discovered at the bottom of their souls another desngn, another aim than the service of truth and virtue.
