Book Synopsis Irish Migration, Networks and Ethnic Identities Since 1750 by : Dr Enda Delaney
Download or read book Irish Migration, Networks and Ethnic Identities Since 1750 written by Dr Enda Delaney and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-08-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays demonstrates in vivid detail how a range of formal and informal networks shaped the Irish experience of emigration, settlement and the construction of ethnic identity in a variety of geographical contexts since 1750. It examines topics as diverse as the associational culture of the Orange Order in the nineteenth century to the role of transatlantic political networks in developing and maintaining a sense of diaspora, all within the overarching theme of the role of networks. This volume represents a pioneering study that contributes to wider debates in the history of global migration, the first of its kind for any ethnic group, with conclusions of relevance far beyond the history of Irish migration and settlement. It is also expected that the volume will have resonance for scholars working in parallel fields, not least those studying different ethnic groups, and the editors contextualise the volume with this in mind in their introductory essay. This book was previously published as a special issue of Immigrants and Minorities.

Download or read book Orangeism written by Kevin Haddick-Flynn and published by Wolfhound Press (IE). This book was released on 1999 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Events centred around the Drumcree Parish Church and the Garvaghy Road have focused worldwide attention on the Orange Order and the Loyal orders in general. Taking its name from the historic figure of William of Orange the Orange Order has become, in the eyes of many, synonymous with bigotry and triumphalism. Much of the history of the Order remains untold and unexplored. In this study of the history of Orangeism, Kevin Haddick-Flynn presents the reader with a comprehensive and definitive account of the Order from its foundation in the 17th century through centuries of growth and conflict and brings us right up to 1999 and the turmoil of recent years culminating in the schism in the order in the wake of the murder of three Quinn brothers in the Summer of 1998.

Download or read book Royal Spectacle written by Ian Radforth and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2004-12-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1860, Queen Victoria sent her eighteen-year-old son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, on a goodwill mission to Canada and the United States. The young heir-apparent (later King Edward VII) had not yet gained his reputation as a fashion setter and rake, but he nevertheless attracted enormous crowds both in Canada, where it was the first royal visit, and in the United States. Civic leaders hosted the visitor in princely style, decorating their towns with triumphal arches and organizing royal entries, public processions, openings, and grand balls. In Royal Spectacle, Ian Radforth recreates these displays of civic pride by making use of the many public and private accounts of them, and he analyses the heated controversies the visit provoked. When communities rushed to honour the prince and put themselves on display, social divisions inadvertently became part of the spectacle seen by the prince and described by visiting journalists. Street theatre reached a climax in Kingston, where the Prince of Wales could not disembark from his steamer because of the defiance of thousands of Orangemen dressed in their brilliant regalia and waiving their banners. Contemporary depictions of the tour provide an opportunity to interpret the cultural values and social differences that shaped Canada during the Confederation decade and the United States on the eve of the Civil War. Topics explored include Orange-Green conflict, First Nations and the politics of public display, contested representations of race and gender, the tourist gaze, and meanings of crown and empire. An original and erudite study, Royal Spectacle contributes greatly to historical research on public spectacle, colonial and national identities, Britishness in the Atlantic world, and the history of the monarchy.
