Book excerpt: In FY 1990, Congress directed the Secretary of the Navy to commission a study by the National Academy of Sciences for the production of an integrated technology plan for the evolution of aircraft carriers in the first half of the twenty-first century. The House-Senate conferees emphasized "that the product of this study is to be a technology plan for the evolution of sea bases for the most efficient and economical accommodation of tactical air power in the first half of the twenty-first century". Based on this broad charter of evaluating sea bases, an examination of the floating ocean platform concept was included in the study. The floating ocean platform is a generic description of a large, relatively stationary or slowly mobile, platform that can be positioned in most areas of the ocean, and can serve a variety of purposes. The present report was the author's input to the study. It was based on technical analyses, literature reviews and surveys, and discussions/visits with the main groups and organizations involved in developing the floating ocean platform. All discussion material was unclassified, as are the contents of this report. All the external inputs and discussions, too numerous to mention, made this report possible, and are greatly appreciated. The first part of this report is the summary narrative that was submitted by the author to the Technology Group of the study. The second part is the viewgraphs that were presented to the Technology Group by the author on 12 February 1991. The third part is a selected bibliography of studies on the floating ocean platform over the past two decades, with over three thousand references identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant engineers are responsible for a wide range of industrial activities, and may work in any industry. This means that breadth of knowledge required by such professionals is so wide that previous books addressing plant engineering have either been limited to only certain subjects or cursory in their treatment of topics. The Plant Engineering Handbook offers comprehensive coverage of an enormous range of subjects which are of vital interest to the plant engineer and anyone connected with industrial operations or maintenance. This handbook is packed with indispensable information, from defining just what a Plant Engineer actually does, through selection of a suitable site for a factory and provision of basic facilities (including boilers, electrical systems, water, HVAC systems, pumping systems and floors and finishes) to issues such as lubrication, corrosion, energy conservation, maintenance and materials handling as well as environmental considerations, insurance matters and financial concerns. One of the major features of this volume is its comprehensive treatment of the maintenance management function; in addition to chapters which outline the operation of the various plant equipment there is specialist advice on how to get the most out of that equipment and its operators. This will enable the reader to reap the rewards of more efficient operations, more effective employee contributions and in turn more profitable performance from the plant and the business to which it contributes. The Editor, Keith Mobley and the team of expert contributors, have practiced at the highest levels in leading corporations across the USA, Europe and the rest of the world. Produced in association with Plant Engineering magazine, this book will be a source of information for plant engineers in any industry worldwide.* A Flagship reference work for the Plant Engineering series* Provides comprehensive coverage on an enormous range of subjects vital to plant and industrial engineer* Includes an international perspective including dual units and regulations

This event was the second in a series of electroanalytical conferences. The first was held in Ireland 1986 and the next will be held in Spain 1990. The aim of these conferences is tobring tagether scientists who use electroanalytical methods in their research. This is also reflected in the disposition of this volume where instrumentation and applications from the different fields have their own chapters. The editors are grateful to Mr. Johan Nyman, Mr. Kent Westerbolm and Mr. Markku Lehto for their technical assistance during the editorial work of this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Impact is concerned with the behaviour of structures and components subjected to large dynamic, impact and explosive loads which produce inelastic deformations. It is of interest for safety calculations, hazard assessments and energy absorbing systems throughout industry. The first five chapters introduce the rigid plastic methods of analysis for the static behaviour and the dynamic response of beams, plates and shells. The influence of transverse shear, rotatory inertia, finite displacements and dynamic material properties are introduced and studied in some detail. Dynamic progressive buckling, which develops in several energy absorbing systems, and the phenomenon of dynamic plastic buckling are introduced. Scaling laws are discussed which are important for relating the response of small-scale experimental tests to the dynamic behaviour of full-scale prototypes. This text is invaluable to undergraduates, graduates and professionals learning about the behaviour of structures subjected to large impact, dynamic and blast loadings producing an inelastic response.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Process flowsheeting concerns the use of computers to stimulate and design chemical plant of all types, such as petroleum refineries, petrochemical complexes or even food factories. In this 1979 introduction to the topic the authors examine the role of flowsheeting in process plant design and look at the various techniques on which computer-aided systems may be based. For each one of these approaches the advantages and disadvantages are clearly stated and the four most important methods are described in detail. In each case the motivation for its development is analysed and its use is illustrated by a number of practical examples. Particular attention is devoted to the underlying technology of process flowsheeting systems, and an introduction to the analysis of degrees of freedom in flowsheeting and a guide to further reading are also included. This book will still hold value for those interested in the historical development of process flowsheeting.
