The first arises from having the transition and distribution matrices of the system be random variables, i.e., the random parameter problem; the second from having multiplicative noise at the input to the system, this being a special case of the first problem area; and the third from being unable to measure the state vector of the system exactly. In each of these 3 areas, the performance of the system is measured by using either a generalized sum-squared-error, a final-value, or a minimum-time criterion. The design procedures are based either upon minimizing the expected value of the performance index or upon minimiz'ng the performance index in the presence of worst-case variations within the system, e.g., minimizing the expected value of the sumsquared-error. In general, the results are in the form of feedback coefficients which relate the value of the optimum input to the value of the state vector of the system. (Author).

Book excerpt: Advances in Control Systems: Theory and Applications, Volume 6 provides information pertinent to the significant progress in the field of control and systems theory and applications. This book presents the higher level of automata, which represent the embodiment of the application of artificial intelligence techniques to control system design and may be described as self-organizing systems. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the existing technology in learning control system. This text then demonstrates how to apply artificial intelligence techniques to the designs of off-line and on-line learning control systems. Other chapters consider the decomposition methods and the associated multilevel optimization techniques applicable to control system optimization problems. This book discusses as well the complex optimal system control problems applied to the trajectory optimization problem. The final chapter deals with systems described by partial differential equations. This book is a valuable resource for control system engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation; methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; and methods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particular branches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation, - Non-Lagrange interpolation, - Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform - Generalised low-rank matrix approximation - Optimal data compression - Optimal nonlinear filtering

We have knownGiorgiosince our undergraduatestudies at the University of Padova, wherewe?rst experiencedhisfascinatingteachingin theclass ofSystem Identi?cation. While progressing through the PhD program, then continuing to collaborate with him and eventually becoming colleagues, we have had many opportunitiesto appreciate the value of Giorgio as a professor and a scientist, and chie?y as a person. We learned a lot from him and we feel indebted for his scienti?c guidance, his constant support, encouragement and enthusiasm. For these reasons we are proud to dedicate this book to Giorgio. The articles in the volume will be presented by prominent researchers at the "--Ternational Conference on Modeling, Estimation and Control: A Symposium in Honor of Giorgio Picci on the Occasion of his Sixty-Fifth Birthday", to be held in Venice on October 4-5, 2007. The material covers a broad range of topics in mathematical systems theory, esti- tion, identi?cation and control, re?ecting the wide network of scienti?c relationships established during the last thirty years between the authors and Giorgio. Critical d- cussion of fundamental concepts, close collaboration on speci?c topics, joint research programs in this group of talented people have nourished the development of the?eld, where Giorgio has contributed to establishing several cornerstones.

Book excerpt: In this investigation the geneal solution is derived for the problem of the optimum linear estimation of a sampled stochastic process, when the transition and output matrices of the model of the process are random parameters that are independent from one sample point to the next with known mean and covariance. The resulting estimate is optimum in the sense that it minimizes the trace of the covariance matrix of the error (a generalized mean-squared-error criterion). All of these results are derived from the sampled version of the Wiener-Hopf equation, and they apply without modification to stationary and nonstationary statistics and to growing-memory and infinite-memory filters. Book excerpt: This research is concerned with the development of computer-oriented procedures for the design of sampled data control systems. Two general areas of this problem are considered: the synthesis of optimal controllers having low dynamical order, and the design of adaptive control systems. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of a quantitative performance criterion. Two new performance criteria are developed; the meanquadratic-error criterion and the average rate-of-decay criterion. Since the primary requirement of a dynamical system is stability, these criteria are examined in terms of the theorems from Liapunov's direct method of stability analysis. The analysis of the rate criterion may be applied to nonlinear as well as linear systems. Included in the discussion are illustrations on how some of the qualitative performance criteria, such as 'good' transient response, may be satisfied through proper selection of the mathematical performance criterion. The optimization procedures are based upon the concept of performance feedback in which the evaluated performance of the system is used directly in the adjustment of the system parameters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of nature is often through nonuniform observations in space or time. In space, one normally observes the important features of an object, such as edges. The less important features are interpolated. History is a collection of important events that are nonuniformly spaced in time. Historians infer between events (interpolation) and politicians and stock market analysts forecast the future from past and present events (extrapolation). The 20 chapters of Nonuniform Sampling: Theory and Practice contain contributions by leading researchers in nonuniform and Shannon sampling, zero crossing, and interpolation theory. Its practical applications include NMR, seismology, speech and image coding, modulation and coding, optimal content, array processing, and digital filter design. It has a tutorial outlook for practising engineers and advanced students in science, engineering, and mathematics. It is also a useful reference for scientists and engineers working in the areas of medical imaging, geophysics, astronomy, biomedical engineering, computer graphics, digital filter design, speech and video processing, and phased array radar.
