For the beginner, who has little previous exposure to urban runoff quality management, the manual covers the entire subject area from sources and effects of pollutants in urban runoff through the development of management plans and the design of controls. For the municipal stormwater management agency, guidance is given for developing a water quality management plan that takes into account receiving water use objectives, local climatology, regulation, financing and cost, and procedures for comparing various types of controls for suitability and cost effectiveness in a particular area. This guidance will also assist owners of large-scale urban development projects in cost-effectively and aesthetically integrating water quality control to the drainage plan. The manual is also directed to designers who desire a self-contained unit that discusses the design of specific quality controls for urban runoff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water plays an essential role in the development and functioning of a city, but could also be a key risk factor for urban pluvial flooding, which may occur more frequently in the context of future climate change. The traditional means of flood risk management relied heavily on engineering measures, or the use of “gray” infrastructure. Recently, there has been a call to integrate nature-based solutions (NBS), which make use of natural processes and ecosystem services, with conventional engineering approaches. NBS infrastructures and designs pay great attention to ecosystem services considerations in assessing their induced hydrological processes, as well as in managing the stormwater and mitigating urban flood and droughts. Nevertheless, compared with grey infrastructure, larger space could be demanded for NBS, while the buffer effect for NBS in extremes events is still uncertain for evaluation.

Book excerpt: Precision conservation is a reality, and we are moving towards improved effectiveness of conservation practices by accounting for temporal and spatial variability within and off field. This is the first book to cover the application of the principles of precision conservation to target conservation practices across fields and watersheds. It has clearly been established that the 21st century will present enormous challenges, from increased yield demands to climate change. Without improved conservation practices it will not be possible to ensure food security and conservation effectiveness. Readers will appreciate the application of the precision conservation concept to increase conservation effectiveness in a variety of contexts, with a focus on recent advances in technology, methods, and improved results. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway design engineers, maintenance engineers, environmental personnel, administrators, and others responsible for the design, operation, and maintenance of stormwater management for highways and ancillary facilities. Information is presented on the basic hydrology needed to assess stormwater impacts and on the effectiveness of stormwater management techniques. Designers of highway facilities must consider stormwater management requirements within the context of both localized runoff impacts, as well as downstream effects of runoff. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the management of both stormwater quantity and stormwater quality. Stormwater quantity includes an overview of methods of estimating runoff and management control practices. Stormwater quality management includes discussions of the most prevalent pollutants and best management practices (BMP) to minimize pollutants from transportation facilities. Various types of structural and non-structural methods are described, including their design considerations and efficiencies. Several stormwater management models are described, with special concern for highway applications. Highlights from the 1990 National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits are presented.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching goal of the dissertation is the development of an integrated, scalable decision support framework that allows for optimization and comprehensive cost estimates of green infrastructure and is adaptable across the diverse hydroclimatology, regional policies, and practices. The integrated decision support system includes tools built around a user-friendly interface that can be implemented from the plot to sewer-shed scales. It includes novel and existing tools (i.e., Storm Water Management Model (SWMM)) coupled to optimization algorithms for strategic placement of stormwater best management practices (BMPs) on a watershed scale. The system of tools will allow resource managers and communities to evaluate options for improving stormwater runoff management using green infrastructure including costs. This research includes 3 chapters (excluding introduction and conclusion sections) with each chapter focusing on a specific tool. Chapter 2 presents the development of a site-scale integrated decision support tool (i-DSTss) for selection and sizing of stormwater BMPs. The tool has several component modules—hydrology, BMP selection and sizing, and life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA)—integrated into a single platform. The hydrology module predicted runoff from a small residential area and a parking lot with R2 value of 0.77 and 0.74, respectively. The BMP sizing module predicted outflow rates from a permeable pavement with R2 value of 0.89. The i-DSTss is built on an accessible platform and can be operated with a basic skillset. The i-DSTss is intended for designers, regulators, and municipalities for quick analysis of scenarios involving interaction among several factors
