Book excerpt: The problem of optimal joint pricing and advertising decision making for a new product facing potential competitive entry has received inadequate attention. We propose a model that attempts to find the optimal price - advertising frontier in the face of potential competitive entry that maximizes total discounted profits for pre- and post-entry periods. We find that a firm would charge the price that equates price elasticity to marginal revenue product of advertising (as predicted by [Dorfman, R. and Steiner, P.O. (1954), Optimal Advertising and Optimal Quality, American Economic Review, 44(5), 826-836.]) only when the potential effects of pricing and advertising on its market share are not considered. Under optimal conditions, aware that market share is subject to erosion, the firm charges a somewhat lower price than the profit maximizing price, and sets an advertisement expense that is somewhat higher than the profit-maximizing advertising level as predicted by Cournot's monopolistic setting. We illustrate the applicability of our model using business product examples taken from several industries including operating systems, software, pharmaceutical, and telephone switching. Directions for future research with implications for B2B managers (for example, the possible effects of preannouncement to forestall competitive entry) are discussed.

The most prominent reason for the increased interest in global sourcing is the idea to benefit from factor cost differences between sourcing regions. However, recent research indicates that cross-border sourcing is no panacea to generate cost savings. There are situations in which international sourcing does not lead to the intended price reductions or even causes expensive backsourcing activities. Accordingly, the ambiguous image of global sourcing is the point of departure for the dissertation at hand. Thus, the main purpose of this thesis is to explore how global sourcing can contribute to a firm’s purchasing performance. The results indicate that the accumulation of social capital between the buying organisation and its international suppliers can increase the sourcing success. However, given the limited amount of resources for those intimate buyer-supplier relationships, close partnerships cannot be maintained with all suppliers. Consequently, the research at hand points in the direction that global sourcing can be a means to increase the intensity of competition in supply markets, facilitating the pursuit of more adversarial relationships.

Procter & Gamble, founded in 1837 is a global manufacturer of consumer goods operating in more than 80 countries with over 110,000 employees. It started its operation in Germany in1960 and is ranked third in the disposable paper industry regarding market share. After introducing the nature of consumer behaviour, and its linkage to Procter & Gamble’s strategic marketing activities, an extensive literature review will be given. The research topic is put in a conceptual and theoretical context by examining literature about the strategic, the operational dimension relevant to this piece of work. The author defined the appropriate methodology and research design, necessary to achieve the research objectives of this study. Firstly, strategic marketing changes and the dynamics of the disposable paper industry were critically analysed based on secondary data. Secondly, the gathered primary data will be presented and discussed in order to identify consumer buying behaviour concerning a product’s pricing and branding strategy. Thirdly, conclusions were drawn about P & G’s success or failure in the industry, supported by Porter’s five forces model. The development of the company’s ‘value pricing strategy’ will be outlined based on secondary data. Concluding, it can be said that an effective marketing strategy considering high value manufacturer’s brands is crucial for achieving a sustainable competitive position in the marketplace.

New product introductions usually trigger various shifts in market dynamics. Manufacturers of new products control the marketing mix by pricing and advertising new products. Competitors could respond by promoting their existing products, or by introducing new products. And finally, consumers can react by either switching their purchases among the existing products or to new products. This dissertation aims at significantly deepening our current understanding of several key facets of the impact of new product introductions on market dynamics. The first part focuses on analytically deriving dynamic optimal marketing mix strategies under various market diffusion dynamics for discontinuous new products. In the rest of the dissertation, we empirically analyze the dynamic effects of various types of continuous new products introduced in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry. Specifically, the first essay focuses on deriving dynamic optimal marketing mix strategies for new products introduced in a market with two distinct consumer segments - "influentials" and "imitators". The market evolution of demand is modeled through an empirically established diffusion function. In the second essay, we investigate aggregate spillover effects and extension success due to three types of brand development strategies - brand extensions, line extensions and cobranded extensions. We also examine the category and market factors that moderate those effects. In the third essay, we analyze the impacts of the introduction of line extensions, which are the most common form of new product introductions in the CPG industry. Specifically, we detect and investigate the shifts in category dynamics due to the introduction of four types of line extensions - novel national brand, novel store brand, imitative national brand and imitative store brand.
