Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optical properties of CdSe and ZnO single crystals have been determined from reflectivity measurements in the range of photon energies 2.5 - 14 electron volts. The measurements were made in a one meter vacuum monochromator using a hydrogen emission source. The crystals were grown from the vapor phase and consisted of platelets (CdSe) and bulk prisms (ZnO). The optical constants, n and k, and the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant were derived from the reflectivity measurements by a Kramers-Kronig analysis. The observed spectrum of CdSe is in good agreement with previously reported results of Cardona. The observed ZnO spectrum corressponds with similar results reported for other II-VI wurtzite semiconductors. The peaks have been interpreted as direct interband transitions in terms of an analogous zinc-blende energy band structure. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wet-Chemically synthesized colloidal nanocrystals are promising room temperature non-Classical light sources. This work is devoted to the study of the optical properties of a particular type of colloidal nanocrystals, called dot-In-Rods, in which a spherical Cadmium Selenide (CdSe) core is surrounded by a rod-Like Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) shell. By studying single dot-In-Rods at room-Temperature with a confocal microscope, a complete characterization of the optical, and especially quantum optical, properties of dot-In-Rods is provided for several geometrical parameters. We first study the blinking statistics of such emitters. We show that dot-In-Rods with thick shells are characterized by a reduced blinking that happens on fast timescales, typically on millisecond timescales. We then go on with a detailed characterization of the photon statistics of dot-In-Rods. A complete description of the photon statistics taking into account the blinking process is realized. The polarization of the emission is also investigated. We show that the emission polarization can be tuned by engineering the geometry. Finally, we also present experiments where we couple dot-In-Rods with various photonic devices. We demonstrate the possibility of excitation of a single emitter using a Zinc Oxyde (ZnO) nanowire. Using defects in liquid crystals, we also show that we are able to efficiently orientate single nanoemitters.
Book Synopsis Optical Properties of Solids by : S. Mitra
Download or read book Optical Properties of Solids written by S. Mitra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an account of the manner in which the optical phenomena observed from solids relate to their fundamental properties. Written at the graduate level, it attempts a threefold purpose: an indication of the breadth of the subject, an in-depth examination of important areas, and a text for a two-semester course. The first two chapters present introductory theory as a foundation for subsequent reading. The following ten chapters broadly concern electronic properties associated with semiconductors ranging from narrow to wide energy gap materials. Lattice properties are examined in the remaining chap ters, in which effects governed by phonons in perfect crystals, point defects, their vibrational and electronic spectra, and electron-phonon interactions are stressed. Fun and hard work, both in considerable measure, have gone into the preparation of this volume. At the University of Freiburg, W. Germany, from August 7-20, 1966, the occasion of a NATO Advanced Study Institute on "The Optical Properties of Solids," the authors of these various chapters lectured for the Institute; this volume provides essentially the "Proceed ings" of that meeting. Many major revisions of original lectures (contrac tions and enlargements) were required for better organization and presentation of the subject matter. Several abbreviated chapters appear mainly to indicate the importance of their contents in optical properties research and to indicate recently published books that provide ample coverage. We are indebted to many people: the authors for their efforts and patience; our host at the University of Freiburg, the late Professor Dr.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A researcher trying to predict or interpret spectra of transition metal ionsin possible laser host materials is confronted with a variety of different methods of describing the same physical situation. This book provides a systematic approach to the applied theory of crystal-field interactions of transition metal ions in 49 crystalline hosts that are or show promise of being good laser materials. The tables that make up the main part of the book present the experimentally determined parameters of the 3dN, 4dN, and 5dN transition-metal ions in the second, third, and fourth ionization states. These parameters have been converted to Slater and crystal-field parameters. The book is a source for research workers in laser development and in crystal-field theory, and for graduate students of solid state chemistry and physics.
Book Synopsis Comprehensive Nanoscience and Technology by :
Download or read book Comprehensive Nanoscience and Technology written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 2785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Nanotechnology and its underpinning sciences are progressing with unprecedented rapidity. With technical advances in a variety of nanoscale fabrication and manipulation technologies, the whole topical area is maturing into a vibrant field that is generating new scientific research and a burgeoning range of commercial applications, with an annual market already at the trillion dollar threshold. The means of fabricating and controlling matter on the nanoscale afford striking and unprecedented opportunities to exploit a variety of exotic phenomena such as quantum, nanophotonic and nanoelectromechanical effects. Moreover, researchers are elucidating new perspectives on the electronic and optical properties of matter because of the way that nanoscale materials bridge the disparate theories describing molecules and bulk matter. Surface phenomena also gain a greatly increased significance; even the well-known link between chemical reactivity and surface-to-volume ratio becomes a major determinant of physical properties, when it operates over nanoscale dimensions. Against this background, this comprehensive work is designed to address the need for a dynamic, authoritative and readily accessible source of information, capturing the full breadth of the subject. Its six volumes, covering a broad spectrum of disciplines including material sciences, chemistry, physics and life sciences, have been written and edited by an outstanding team of international experts. Addressing an extensive, cross-disciplinary audience, each chapter aims to cover key developments in a scholarly, readable and critical style, providing an indispensible first point of entry to the literature for scientists and technologists from interdisciplinary fields. The work focuses on the major classes of nanomaterials in terms of their synthesis, structure and applications, reviewing nanomaterials and their respective technologies in well-structured and comprehensive articles with extensive cross-references. It has been a constant surprise and delight to have found, amongst the rapidly escalating number who work in nanoscience and technology, so many highly esteemed authors willing to contribute. Sharing our anticipation of a major addition to the literature, they have also captured the excitement of the field itself in each carefully crafted chapter. Along with our painstaking and meticulous volume editors, full credit for the success of this enterprise must go to these individuals, together with our thanks for (largely) adhering to the given deadlines. Lastly, we record our sincere thanks and appreciation for the skills and professionalism of the numerous Elsevier staff who have been involved in this project, notably Fiona Geraghty, Megan Palmer and Greg Harris, and especially Donna De Weerd-Wilson who has steered it through from its inception. We have greatly enjoyed working with them all, as we have with each other.
