Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in optical technologies have made it possible to implement optical interconnections in future massively parallel processing systems. Photons are non-charged particles, and do not naturally interact. Consequently, there are many desirable characteristics of optical interconnects, e.g. high speed (speed of light), increased fanout, high bandwidth, high reliability, longer interconnection lengths, low power requirements, and immunity to EMI with reduced crosstalk. Optics can utilize free-space interconnects as well as guided wave technology, neither of which has the problems of VLSI technology mentioned above. Optical interconnections can be built at various levels, providing chip-to-chip, module-to-module, board-to-board, and node-to-node communications. Massively parallel processing using optical interconnections poses new challenges; new system configurations need to be designed, scheduling and data communication schemes based on new resource metrics need to be investigated, algorithms for a wide variety of applications need to be developed under the novel computation models that optical interconnections permit, and so on. Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections is a collection of survey articles written by leading and active scientists in the area of parallel computing using optical interconnections. This is the first book which provides current and comprehensive coverage of the field, reflects the state of the art from high-level architecture design and algorithmic points of view, and points out directions for further research and development.

Book excerpt: Optical media are now widely used in the telecommunication networks, and the evolution of optical and optoelectronic technologies tends to show that their wide range of techniques could be successfully introduced in shorter-distance interconnection systems. This book bridges the existing gap between research in optical interconnects and research in high-performance computing and communication systems, of which parallel processing is just an example. It also provides a more comprehensive understanding of the advantages and limitations of optics as applied to high-speed communications. Audience: The book will be a vital resource for researchers and graduate students of optical interconnects, computer architectures and high-performance computing and communication systems who wish to understand the trends in the newest technologies, models and communication issues in the field.

Book excerpt: Annotation Offers eight invited lectures by contributors from academia and industry in the fields of parallel computer systems, optical interconnections, and technology; two panel discussions; and 34 papers by contributors from throughout the world. In addition to reporting on recent advances in the field, they speculate on how optical interconnections might impact the design of parallel computer systems and communication networks, and the writing of applications and algorithms. Among the topics are reconfigurable architectures, embedding and mapping of applications and algorithms, the packaging and layout of optical interconnections, passive optical elements, data distribution and partitioning, and cost/performance studies. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a monograph on parallel optical interconnects. It presents not only the state of-the-art in this domain but also the necessary physical and chemical background. It also provides a discussion of the potential for future devices. Both experts and newcomers to the area will appreciate the authors' proficiency in providing the complete picture of this rapidly growing field. Optical interconnects are already established in telecommunications and should eventually find their way being applied to chip and even gate level connections in integrated systems. The inspiring environment of the Basic Research Working Group on Optical Information Technology WOIT (3199), together with the excellent and complementary skills of its participants, make this contribution highly worthwhile. Book excerpt: It is our great pleasure to present the proceedings of the symposia and workshops on parallel and distributed computing and applications associated with the ICA3PP 2010 conference. These symposia and workshops provide vibrant opportunities for researchers and industry practitioners to share their research experience, original research results and practical development experiences in the new challenging research areas of parallel and distributed computing technologies and applications. It was the first time that the ICA3PP conference series added symposia and wo- shops to its program in order to provide a wide range of topics that extend beyond the main conferences. The goal was to provide a better coverage of emerging research areas and also forums for focused and stimulating discussions. With this objective in mind, we selected three workshops to accompany the ICA3PP 2010 conference: • FPDC 2010, the 2010 International Symposium on Frontiers of Parallel and Distributed Computing • HPCTA 2010, the 2010 International Workshop on High-Performance Computing, Technologies and Applications • M2A 2010, the 2010 International Workshop on Multicore and Mul- threaded Architectures and Algorithms Each of the symposia / workshops focused on a particular theme and complemented the spectrum of the main conference. All papers published in the workshops proce- ings were selected by the Program Committee on the basis of referee reports. Each paper was reviewed by independent referees who judged the papers for originality, quality, contribution, presentation and consistency with the theme of the workshops.

Book excerpt: The 2004 International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing, - plications and Technologies (PDCAT 2004) was the ?fth annual conference, and was held at the Marina Mandarin Hotel, Singapore on December 8–10, 2004. Since the inaugural PDCAT held in Hong Kong in 2000, the conference has - come a major forum for scientists, engineers, and practitioners throughout the world to present the latest research, results, ideas, developments, techniques, and applications in all areas of parallel and distributed computing. The technical program was comprehensive and featured keynote speeches, te- nical paper presentations, and exhibitions showcased by industry vendors. The technical program committee was overwhelmed with submissions of papers for presentation, from countries worldwide. We received 242 papers and after - viewing them, based on stringent selection criteria, we accepted 173 papers. The papers in the proceedings focus on parallel and distributed computing viewed from the three perspectives of networking and architectures, software systems and technologies, and algorithms and applications. We acknowledge the great contribution from all of our local and international committee members and - perreviewerswhodevotedtheirtimeinthereviewprocessandprovidedvaluable feedback for the authors. PDCAT 2004 could never have been successful without the support and ass- tance of several institutions and many people. We sincerely appreciate the s- port from the National Grid O?ce and IEEE, Singapore for technical co-sponsorship.The?nancialsponsorshipsfromtheindustrialsponsors,Hewlett- Packard Singapore; IBM Singapore; Sun Microsystems; SANDZ Solutions; S- icon Graphics, and Advanced Digital Information Corporation, are gratefully acknowledged.
