Book excerpt: Optical properties of carbon nanotubes have recently attracted considerable amount of attention. Due to there direct band gap material characteristic these and dimension of the order of nano meters they find potential applications in the field of nano photonics. Thus the optical study of carbon nanotubes is important for both fundamental research and for the next generation technical applications. In this thesis single walled carbon nanotubes were dispersed in various encapsulates such as surfactants, polymers, proteins etc to separate them individually and study there optical properties. The individually dispersed single walled carbon nanotubes displayed unique absorbance spectra. The optical absorption spectrum of a particular tube is expected to be dominated by a series of relatively sharp inter-band transitions, at energies associated with the van Hove singularities, the absorbance spectrum obtained on our samples were consistent with this expectation. Our samples also showed sharp photoluminescence peaks mostly from the semiconducting single walled carbon nanotubes. The detailed overlap of the absorbance spectra and photoluminescence spectra lead us to believe that our samples contain mainly individual tubes encapsulated in one of the surfactants or polymers. Thin film transistors (TFT) were made with a mesh of single walled carbon nanotubes as the active channel on top of a silicon/silicon oxide substrate, with silicon acting as a back gate and titanium/gold electrodes were evaporated on top of the nanotube film. Photocurrent properties of these thin films were investigated and they showed a huge change in the photocurrent in the presence and absence of the laser light. Thin films of carbon nanotubes were also deposited on rectangular silicon substrates and the influence of applied strain in the presence of laser light was investigated. These films showed a huge change in resistance on application of mechanical strain. Raman measurements were also performed on these thin films and the obtained radial breathing mode (RBM) data helped resolve the diameter of many single walled carbon nanotubes.

Fundamentally similar to the earlier discovered Buckminsterfullerene (C60), carbon nanotubes are hollow cylinders formed from a single sheet of carbon atoms. The research presented in this dissertation investigates several carbon nanotube properties, with an emphasis on the interactions between light and electrons within the nanotube. Better understanding of these optoelectronic properties is of great interest for future advancement in solar energy conversion. Carbon nanotubes are a quintessential material for researchers studying nanoscience. Small changes in nanotube structure can lead to striking differences in electrical and optical properties. In addition to this rich variety of properties, nanotubes can be concentrically inset within one another resulting in single-walled, double-walled, and multi-walled versions. Single-walled carbon nanotubes are desirable for optoelectronic study as complicated interactions between shells are avoided; which, while an interesting topic, is beyond the scope of this work. In the past, determination of carbon nanotube wall number was achieved via transmission electron microscopy, a technique requiring difficult sample preparation, making it impractical for most working devices. This thesis presents an alternative technique based on the compressibility of nanotube sidewalls as measured by atomic force microscopy. This technique is readily applicable to common device designs and can distinguish single and double-walled carbon nanotubes. This technique has been applied to characterizing the output of our growth process, resulting in recipes that highly favor single-walled growth. The optical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes have been studied intensely. Each single-walled nanotube has an optical fingerprint based on its unique atomic structure. Specific single-walled nanotube structures can be selected for a wide range of optical applications. Again, however, most techniques previously used to study these optical properties are not easily transferable to common device designs. In this research, the measurement of nanotube fingerprints is achieved by optoelectronic means through the use of a newly constructed scanning photocurrent microscope. This instrument measures changes in electrical transport as the device is locally illuminated by a spectrally-tunable light source, making it a versatile tool for studying nanostructures implemented in a variety device designs. Early work on nanotube optoelectronic properties attributed photocurrent generation to a photovoltaic mechanism. This thesis, however, shows that strong photothermoelectric effects can also be present in nanotube optoelectronic devices. Light absorbed by a nanostructure can locally raise the temperature, resulting in thermoelectric currents. If a carbon nanotube is being employed as the absorbing element of a solar cell, it is possible for thermoelectric currents to reduce or enhance the efficiency of energy conversion. The last portion of this work investigates the nature of optically generated thermoelectric effects in carbon nanotubes. With a better understanding of these thermoelectric effects, future nanostructure solar cell design can efficiently utilize thermoelectric currents.

Electrical and optical characterization gives insight on their performance. The realization of liquid crystal and OLED displays shows the compatibility of transparent carbon nanotube electrodes with production processes. Results of the semiconductor application are presented on a transistor level. The dependence of the transistor performance on the network density for both, mixed and highly semiconducting nanotubes is discussed.

Samples were grown with an injection chemical vapor deposition method on substrates of silicon with various deposited layers and bare fused silica. The morphology of the forest is characterized by the height, density, and presence of defects. Total diffuse reflectance and transmittance measurements were taken in the 2-16 +̧−7m spectral range and correlated to the forest0́9s specific morphology. From these correlations, the conditions necessary to maximize the absorption of the forest were found and exploited to cater sample growth for specific substrates to make ideal absorbers. From the transmittance data, the absorption coefficient is found via Beer-Lambert0́9s Law and also correlated to sample morphology, giving us an indication of the height of the forest needed for ideal absorption. Two models were used to attempt to reproduce the experimental absorption coefficient: an effective medium theory using a Maxwell Garnett approximation and by treating the carbon nanotube forest as an effective cylindrical waveguide with walls of graphite. Each model leads to a set of fitting parameters providing a better physical understanding of the forests. It was found that the effective medium theory gave results loosely corroborated with electron microscopy, but had trouble fitting the experimental data, and the index of refraction it provides does not behave like a unified medium. The waveguide model fits the data well, but it requires more experimental evidence to be more conclusive. The theoretical models need more work, but fabrication of ideal absorbers has been achieved on various substrates providing framework for their usage in radiometry and spectroscopy
