Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China and Japan are the two most important countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Their economic ties are significant not only because they are the second and third largest economies in today's world, but also because their economic relationship has an important impact on regional economic co-operation and international production chains. China's Japan Policy: Adjusting to New Challenges analyzes the significance of Japan in China's foreign policy framework within the broader context of China's world view, its national objectives, and the Chinese leadership's policy adjustments in response to the changing international and domestic circumstances. It looks at China's Japan policy in recent decades since their normalization of relations in 1972. The book also examines the unique characteristics of the China–Japan bilateral relationship, especially the historical legacy, territorial disputes, and the special cultural affinities between the two nations. Readers interested in China and Japan will find this an invaluable reference with detailed insights on international relations and economic developments in the Asia-Pacific region. Book excerpt: CONTENTS CHAPTER I The War Against Japan PAGE i CHAPTER II The Political Oligarchy I 12 CHAPTER III The Economic Oligarchy 59 CHAPTER IV The Emperor Idea 91 CHAPTER V Foreign Influences and Anti-Foreignism 123 CHAPTER VI The Authoritarian State 155 CHAPTER VII Background of War 182 CHAPTER VIII The Future of Japan 226 INDEX follows page 258 VII PREFACE a UR WAR against Japan has been long and costly in both men and treasure. Yet we still have not revealed clearly that we know what we are fighting for. We have fought to avenge Pearl Harbor and the victims of the infamous March of Death in the Philippines, to kill c the little yellow monkey men and., occasionally and in a vague sort of way, to rid the world of Japanese militarism The lack of a clearly defined set of war aims against Japan has certainly not impaired the fighting efficiency of the armies and the naval and air forces that have been piling defeat after defeat on the Japanese enemy. But as the final defeat of Japan comes nearer and the problems of the peace loom larger, we must have a clearer conception of the nature of the ideas that we are fighting in our war against Japan. This book has been written in the hope of bringing into clearer focus the aims of the ideological war. We shall not have won the war until the peace hasbeen firmly established., and it can be so established only after the crushing of the ideas on which Japanese mili tarism and aggression are based. It would be impossible to list here the names of all who have helped me, directly or indirectly, to formulate my thinking about Japan. I am greatly in debt to my classes at the Univer sity of Washington, whose interest and, at times, lack of interest forced meto do much of the research and the think ing on which the book is based. George E. Taylor, the head of my department at the University, and Harold M. Vinacke of ix Preface the University of Cincinnati have been particularly unstint ing in the aid and counsel they have given me. I musty of course, assume sole responsibility for the ideas set down in these pages. They are the fruit of my research and my thinking at the University and are not related to the work I have been engaged in since my departure, on leave, from the University in the spring of 1942. I should like to add that the names in this book are set down according to the Japanese usage the surname is written first and the given name second. Japanese historical figures are re ferred to by their given names rather than by their family names. JOHN M. MAKI Japanese Militarism

Book excerpt: In 1960 the Japan-United States security treaty was rewritten amid controversy and rancor. In the years since, Japan has astonished the world with her comeback from the status of defeated nation to a major industrial nation. This book is a detailed study of Japan's foreign policy which guided the nation in its resurgence. Five years in the preparation, the book examines the three main pillars of Japanese foreign policy: national prosperity, national security and recognition of Japan as an international power. The author's detailed knowledge of Japanese domestic politics provides the essential background for an understanding of the nation's pursuit of its foreign objectives.

The book is comprised of 11 chapters that cover the international relation policy of a great power. The text first discusses the characteristics and distinctive features of imperialist foreign policy in the 70s and early 80s. The next chapters deal with the diplomacy of major world powers, which include U.S., France, Federal Republic of Germany, Great Britain, and Italy. The next two chapters cover eastern powers, namely, China and Japan. Chapter 9 tackles the diplomacy of capitalist countries and the disarmament problem. The 10th chapter discusses the diplomacy of the western powers and European security, while the last chapter details the diplomacy of the developed capitalist countries and the United Nations organization. The book will be of great use to individuals who have a keen interest in international diplomacy, particular the diplomatic pattern of the global superpowers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive research on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, this book closely examines the claims and controversy surrounding the ‘Nanjing Massacre’, a period of murder in 1937-1938 committed by Japanese troops against the residents of Nanjing (Nanking), after the capture of the then capital of the Republic of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Focusing on weighing up arguments denying Nanjing Massacre, this book considers the Japanese ‘Illusion’ school of thought which contests the truth of the Nanjing Massacre claims, including the death toll and the scale of the violence. The Nanjing Massacre remains a controversial issue in Sino-Japanese relations, despite the normalization of bilateral relations, and this book goes to great lengths to examine the events through comparative narratives, investigating different perspectives and contributings to the debate from the extensive research of the Tokyo Trial Research Centre at Shanghai, as well as volumes of Chinese and Japanese historical documents.
