Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the history of a vital stage of UK technical and economic development, perhaps the most important since the Second World War. It shows, from an industrial viewpoint, how the British handled the exploitation of their most significant natural resource gain of the 20th century. Notwithstanding the nearly 30 years of government support through the Offshore Supplies Office, the UK has not reaped the full benefit of the North Sea discoveries; this book attempts to explain why. It will assist governments and industries faced with future instances of unforeseen, specialist and large-scale new demand to manage their reactions more effectively. It also throws light on how governments can pursue strategic industrial objectives while leaving market mechanisms to function with minimal interference, something some administrations – perhaps even the British – may wish to do now or in the future. Covers the entire period from the first well offshore Britain until the dismantling of the specific British industrial policy measures for offshore supplies Based in large measure upon archives not previously accessed and the private testimony/papers of participants 'Drills down' to the level of individual company decisions through case study and other material The only properly researched description of how the world’s first major local content initiative developed
Book Synopsis Myanmar’s Political Transition and Lost Opportunities (2010–2016) by : Ye Htut
Download or read book Myanmar’s Political Transition and Lost Opportunities (2010–2016) written by Ye Htut and published by ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the politics of Myanmar under the reformist president Thein Sein. After taking office in March 2011, Thein Sein initiated the bloodless Myanmar Spring. He was able to transform Myanmar into a more transparent and dynamic society, bring Aung San Suu Kyi and other opposition activists into the political process, initiate a peace process with the ethnic armed organizations, reintegrate Myanmar into the international community after five decades of isolation, and, most importantly, for the first time since the country regained independence in 1948, he was able to enact the peaceful transfer of power from one elected government to another. But Thein Sein also lost opportunities to deliver what the people anticipated, and he failed to bring his USDP party to victory in the 2015 election. This book is not about the successes of the Thein Sein administration. Rather, it examines the reasons behind the lost opportunities in the transition to democracy. It draws on the author’s experiences as a member of Thein Sein’s cabinet as well as on extensive interviews with other cabinet members and politicians involved in the crucial events that took place between 2010 and 2016. The book is a must-read for anyone interested in this critical period of change for Myanmar.

Download or read book Opportunities Missed, Opportunities Seized written by Bruce W. Jentleson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic logic of preventive diplomacy is unassailable. Act early to prevent disputes from escalating; reduce tensions that could lead to war; deal with today's conflicts before they become tomorrow's crises. Yet as we look at the record of these first years of the post-Cold War era, it is quite mixed. There have been some preventive diplomacy successes and opportunities that have been seized by major powers and international organizations to help preserve and protect the peace. But there also have been other opportunities that have been missed, with some of the century's most deadly conflicts the result. This study examines ten major post-Cold War cases including Croatia-Bosnia, Rwanda, the Baltics, Russia-Ukraine, Macedonia, and North Korea_to assess the key factors contributing to both the success and failure of preventive diplomacy. The method of case study analysis employed is based on the work of Alexander L. George. Authors include both leading academics and prominent policy officials with first-hand knowledge.

Book Synopsis Opportunities Gained And Lost: J. E. B. Stuart’s Cavalry Operations In The Seven Days Campaign by : Major James R. Smith
Download or read book Opportunities Gained And Lost: J. E. B. Stuart’s Cavalry Operations In The Seven Days Campaign written by Major James R. Smith and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluates Confederate cavalry operations 12 June to 3 July 1862, as a prelude to and as a part of the “Seven Days Campaign.” General Robert E. Lee’s Seven Days Campaign succeeded in defeating a Union offensive aimed at Richmond, Virginia and served as an important turning point in the American Civil War. The thesis seeks to determine the substantive contributions General J. E. B. Stuart’s cavalry brigade made to this Confederate victory, as well as to assess the strengths and shortcomings of his particular style of mounted employment Stuart launched an armed reconnaissance 12-15 June 1862 known thereafter as the “Chickahominy Raid” that provided intelligence vital to General Lee’s success in the campaign and helped to bolster sagging Confederate morale. This was the first of the Confederate cavalry leader’s renowned “raids,” a style of operation that would be adopted by other Confederate mounted units and the Union cavalry as well. Stuart also attempted to strike out independently during the Seven Days Campaign itself, but his activities in this regard were not well synchronized with the rest of Lee’s army. As a result, Stuart missed opportunities to play a more decisive role in the battles outside Richmond.

Book Synopsis Crisis and Opportunity by : Francois Falloux
Download or read book Crisis and Opportunity written by Francois Falloux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Prix Pierre Chauleur of the French Academie des Sciences d'Outre-Mer Until some way is found of dealing with Africa's catastrophic environmental crises none of the continent's other problems will find a long-term solution. Yet there is hope, and Crisis and Opportunity sets out a programme for dealing with the problems successfully. Written in a clear and engaging style, the book shows how environmental management can be achieved and institutionalized from within Africa, rather than through interference from the West, by implementing National Environmental Action Plans (NEAPS). Aware of the urgency of the problems, Francois Falloux and Lee Talbot offer practical guidelines based on direct experience and incorporate a great range of relevant case studies and examples. Their book will be of enormous importance to the governments, local communities and development agencies confronting the issues, and may mark a milestone if recovery in Africa is to take place. Francois Falloux is Senior Environmental Advisor, Africa Region at the World Bank. Dr Lee M Talbot is a former Director-General of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). Originally published in 1993

Book Synopsis Governance and Opportunity in Metropolitan America by : Committee on Improving the Future of U.S. Cities Through Improved Metropolitan Area Governance
Download or read book Governance and Opportunity in Metropolitan America written by Committee on Improving the Future of U.S. Cities Through Improved Metropolitan Area Governance and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-09-24 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's cities have symbolized the nation's prosperity, dynamism, and innovation. Even with the trend toward suburbanization, many central cities attract substantial new investment and employment. Within this profile of health, however, many urban areas are beset by problems of economic disparity, physical deterioration, and social distress. This volume addresses the condition of the city from the perspective of the larger metropolitan region. It offers important, thought-provoking perspectives on the structure of metropolitan-level decisionmaking, the disadvantages faced by cities and city residents, and expanding economic opportunity to all residents in a metropolitan area. The book provides data, real-world examples, and analyses in key areas: Distribution of metropolitan populations and what this means for city dwellers, suburbanites, whites, and minorities. How quality of life depends on the spatial structure of a community and how problems are based on inequalities in spatial opportunity--with a focus on the relationship between taxes and services. The role of the central city today, the rationale for revitalizing central cities, and city-suburban interdependence. The book includes papers that provide in-depth examinations of zoning policy in relation to patterns of suburban development; regionalism in transportation and air quality; the geography of economic and social opportunity; social stratification in metropolitan areas; and fiscal and service disparities within metropolitan areas.

Book Synopsis Missed Opportunities by : Marc Raboy
Download or read book Missed Opportunities written by Marc Raboy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1990 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Missed Opportunities, Marc Raboy reveals the short-sightedness behind the traditional view of Canadian broadcasting policy as an instrument for promoting a national identity and culture. He argues that Canadian broadcasting policy has served as a political instrument for reinforcing a certain image of Canada against insurgent challenges, such as maintaining the image of Canada as a political entity distinct from the United States and acting against internal threats, most notably from Quebec. It has served as a vehicle for the development of private broadcasting industries and to further the general interests of the Canadian state. Most of the time, Raboy maintains, this policy has been the object of vigorous public dispute.
Book Synopsis War and Media Operations by : Thomas Rid
Download or read book War and Media Operations written by Thomas Rid and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-04-11 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first academic analysis of the role of embedded media in the 2003 Iraq War, providing a concise history of US military public affairs management since Vietnam. In late summer 2002, the Pentagon considered giving the press an inside view of the upcoming invasion of Iraq. The decision was surprising, and the innovative "embedded media program" itself received intense coverage in the media. Its critics argued that the program was simply a new and sophisticated form of propaganda. Their implicit assumption was that the Pentagon had become better at its news management and had learned to co-opt the media. This new book tests this assumption, introducing a model of organizational learning and redraws the US military’s cumbersome learning curve in public affairs from Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, the Balkans to Afghanistan, examining whether past lessons were implemented in Iraq in 2003. Thomas Rid argues that while the US armed forces have improved their press operations, America’s military is still one step behind fast-learning and media-savvy global terrorist organizations. War and Media Operations will be of great interest to students of the Iraq War, media and war, propaganda, political communications and military studies in general.
Book Synopsis Proportional Liability: Analytical and Comparative Perspectives by : Israel Gilead
Download or read book Proportional Liability: Analytical and Comparative Perspectives written by Israel Gilead and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Causal uncertainty is a wide-spread phenomenon. Courts are often unable to determine whether a defendant’s tortious conduct was a factual cause of a plaintiff’s harm. Yet, sometimes courts can determine the probability that the defendant caused the plaintiff’s harm, although often there is considerable variance in the probability estimate based on the available evidence. The conventional way to cope with this uncertainty has been to apply the evidentiary rule of ‘standard of proof’. The application of this ‘all or nothing’ rule can lead to unfairness by absolving defendants who acted tortiously and may also create undesirable incentives that result in greater wrongful conduct and injustice to victims. Some courts have decided that this ‘no-liability’ outcome is undesirable. They have adopted rules of proportional liability that compensate plaintiffs according to the probability that their harm was caused by the defendant’s tortious conduct. In 2005 the Principles of European Tort Law (PETL) made a breakthrough in this regard by embracing rules of proportional liability. This project, building on PETL, endeavours to make further inquiries into the desirable scope of proportional liability and to offer a more detailed view of its meaning, implications, and ramifications.
