Book excerpt: The paper discusses the opportunities for sustainable rural development in Bulgaria provided by the integrated development of organic production and alternative tourism. The study outlines that rural areas have significant natural, human, economic and cultural potential and their development supports the regional growth. Organic production as an alternative for sustainable rural development is examined by the traditional pillars of sustainability as providing: economic sustainability - competitiveness increase, strong market orientation and increase in incomes; social sustainability - bigger responsibility towards consumers' needs, improving quality and safety of food, regional development; ecologic sustainability - a common frame, effective application, control, development of standards of environmental protection, health and welfare. The dimensions of culture and accountability are added too and the significance of the relationships with the tourism sector are underlined. It is concluded that sustainable alternative tourism is one of the key sectors with great opportunities for diversifying rural economy minimizing environmental and cultural damages, optimizing visitors' satisfaction, maximizing long-term economic growth, and balancing growth potential and the conservation of the environment.

Book excerpt: Considering the priorities of sustainable development in the context of assurance food quality and safety and rural development, the paper underlines the importance of agri-food sector and the elaboration and the implementation of new methods and instruments in management of small and medium agricultural holdings. The study addresses organic production as an overall systematic approach having a great potential for assuring sustainable growth in rural areas, and it is discussed in terms of the opportunities provided by alternative food networks, and community supported agriculture in particular. The study presented reveals the most important questions in the development of community supported agriculture (CSA) in Bulgaria and its link to organic production development. The focus in the following discussion is put on the functioning of CSA groups in the country making a proposal for a model of establishment and management underlining the significance of motivation, communication and feedbacks and envisaging the application of the concept of corporate social responsibility.

However a number of strategic and organizational problems and also certain rules for its application in the praxis need to be formulated for its effective realization in Bulgaria. The strategic framework for rural areas development of the Ruse District and the opportunities for applying the Leader approach and creation of LAGs as a tool for assuring sustainable development are presented in the article. An analysis has been made about the problems for the "Leader" approach application in Bulgaria. The basis for the analysis are the main results from the realization of the pilot project "Sustainable Rural Development" managed by the Ministry of agriculture and forestry and UNDP, as well as good practices and problems identified. An investigation of the establishment process and also surveying of functional problems of LAGs in Bulgaria is made in the article. Results of a special designed questionnaire have been analysed and discussed in the paper. On that basis appropriate conclusions and recommendations are developed and presented in the paper, which might be used in the process of establishing of LAGs in Ruse district and also in other regions in Bulgaria.

It also focuses on UA effects on the social well-being of citizens and communities, the correlation between social capital and UA attitudes, the challenges for UA to integrate disadvantaged social groups, the factors for success of small UA businesses, as well as the role of policy and civil society in developing UA. This work is also important for the analysis of the underlying links between all aspects of urban agriculture, many of which are valid beyond the local socio-economic context and environmental specifics of the city of Sofia.

The research aims to reveal the role and benefits of social entrepreneurship for sustainable rural development through analysis of the factors and barriers to its application. It is important in rural areas to create suitable conditions for building social enterprises with a large scope covering all vulnerable groups of the territory. In this context, the logical connection between the factors of social entrepreneurship is discussed which takes into account the peculiarities of rural areas in Bulgaria in connection with its application. Some of the most important factors, challenges, and constraints that have been analyzed are economic, social and institutional. The results show that sustainable rural development can be achieved in solving socially significant problems with the means and approaches of social entrepreneurship and its promotion in rural areas.
