Book Synopsis From Dissonance to Sense by : Thomas Wilhelmsson
Download or read book From Dissonance to Sense written by Thomas Wilhelmsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this book focuses on the new role of private law in late modernity. It analyses the pressures for changes in this area of law due to the present processes of privatisation and marketisation. The perspective is welfarist: in what ways and to what extent can the welfare state expectations of the citizens be defended through private law mechanisms when state-offered security is diminishing? Which alternatives are available when developing private law? The questions are discussed against the background of theories concerning important features of late modern society, for example consumerism, risk, information, globalisation and fragmentation. Several fields of private law are analysed, such as private law theory, tort and liability law, contract law and credit law as well as access to justice issues. The approach is comparative, including analyses of both common law and continental law.
Book Synopsis Perspectives and Policies on ICT in Society by : Jacques Berleur
Download or read book Perspectives and Policies on ICT in Society written by Jacques Berleur and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governments, the media, the information technology industry and scientists publicly argue that information and communication technologies (ICT) will bring about an inevitable transition from "industrial" to "information" or "knowledge-based" economies and societies. It is assumed that all aspects of our economic and social lives, in both the public and private spheres, will be radically different from what they are today. The World Summit on the Information Society (Geneva 2003 - Tunis 2005) shows the importance of a worldwide reflection on those topics. Perspectives and Policies on ICT in Society explores the ICT policies of different nations and regions such as Africa, China, Europe, and India. The authors assess the arguments surrounding the impending new age, as well as some of the more sensitive issues of its developments. This progress will signal an expansion of ICT in many domains - the so-called ubiquity - such as in the workplace, the home, government, and education and it will affect privacy and professional ethics. The expansion will also encompass all parts of the earth, particularly developing countries. Such growth must take place in the context of historical dimensions and should underscore the accountability of professionals in the field. The intent of this book is to address these issues and to serve as a handbook of IFIP's TC9 "Computers and Society" committee. Thirty authors from twelve countries consider the ICT policies with their associated perspectives and they explore what may be the information age and the digital society of tomorrow. The book provides reflection on today's complex society and addresses the uncertain developments rising from an increasingly global and technologically connected world. Jacques Berleur is at the University of Namur, Belgium, and Chrisanthi Avgerou at the London School of Economics, United Kingdom.

Book Synopsis The Social in the Global by : Jonathan Joseph
Download or read book The Social in the Global written by Jonathan Joseph and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do influential social ideas contribute to global governance? This book takes an original approach to international relations by looking at the way social ideas help to portray the world in a particular way. Jonathan Joseph begins by analysing the role of important concepts such as globalisation, global civil society, social capital, networks and risk; then examines the role these concepts play in the discourse of international organisations. Using the concept of governmentality, he argues that contemporary social theories help justify contemporary forms of governance. By comparing organisations like the EU and the World Bank, Joseph investigates the extent to which these ideas are influential in theory and in practice.
Book Synopsis Industry and the European Union by : Michael Darmer
Download or read book Industry and the European Union written by Michael Darmer and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book is a most valuable contribution to the understanding of the complexity of European policies and their impact on individual businesses and industry as a whole. That focus makes this book unique. All in all, there are only a few books about the industrial policy of the European Union and none with such a focus.' - Karel van Miert, Universiteit Nyenrode, The Netherlands 'Contrary to standard works covering community industrial policy, this book is based on the experience of those involved in the actual formulation of policies. It documents the evolution of this policy towards a horizontal approach combining various instruments that need to be made consistent with each other. This book will be very valuable to scholars and policymakers alike.' - Alexis Jacquemin, European Commission and Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium European policies increasingly affect the daily decisions of European firms. Better understanding of the motivation and reasoning behind policies that affect industry is therefore essential to those interested in or affected by industrial policy. Industry and the European Union explores different European policy areas, focusing on aspects that are of particular importance for business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diffusion of information and communication technologies is rapidly changing the structure of advanced economies, raising new problems of technological unemployment. This book was released on 2011-04-28 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the success of the World Scientific publication “Governing and Managing Knowledge” edited by Thomas Menkhoff, Hans-Dieter Evers and Chay Yue Wah in 2005, this unique volume presents 16 new theoretical-practical papers on the strategic aspects of developing knowledge-based economies with case studies from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Uzbekistan. A key question which the book seeks to answer is what Asian policy-makers and leaders in government, economy and society can do to further enhance learning and capability formation so as to foster sustainable development in an increasingly globalized world. It addresses the politico-cultural and socio-economic challenges of effectively managing both knowledge resources and coping with the great digital divide created by globalization, continuous technology innovations and rapid external change. Book Synopsis Capacity Building for IT in Education in Developing Countries by : Gail Marshall
Download or read book Capacity Building for IT in Education in Developing Countries written by Gail Marshall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deryn Watson CapBIT 97, Capacity Building for Information Technologies in Education in Developing Countries, from which this publication derives, was an invited IFIP working conference sponsored by Working Groups in secondary (WG 3. 1), elementary (WG 3. 5), and vocational and professional (WG 3. 4) education under the auspices ofIFIP Technical Committee for Education (TC3). The conference was held in Harare, Zimbabwe 25th - 29th August 1997. CapBIT '97 was the first time that the IFIP Technical Committee for Education had held a conference in a developing country. When the Computer Society of Zimbabwe offered to host the event, we determined that the location and conference topic reflect the importance of issues facing countries at all stages of developmen- especially Information Technologies (IT) development. Information Technologies have become, within a short time, one of the basic building blocks of modem industrial society. Understanding IT, and mastering basic skills and concepts of IT, are now regarded as part of the core education of all people around the world, alongside reading and writing. IT now permeates the business environment and underpins the success of modem corporations as well as providing government with cost-effective civil service systems. At the same time, the tools and technologies of IT are of value in the process of learning, and in the organisation and management of learning institutions.
