Book Synopsis EU Environmental Policies in Subnational Regions by : Antje C.K. Brown
Download or read book EU Environmental Policies in Subnational Regions written by Antje C.K. Brown and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Despite the fact that environmental directives are one of the strongest areas of policy decreed by the EU, it has a much poorer record when it comes to actual implementation of these policies. Instead of focusing on the traditional state-centrist accounts, this book compares two subnational regions within the EU, Scotland and Bavaria, and their role in the policy process. The author offers a multi-layered implementation map which highlights three main government ’layers’ involved in the filtering process and identifies various formal and informal determinants which shape EU environmental policies during the process. The book not only compares implementation performances between the two regions and their respective states, but also compares the region’s processes against the national processes, thereby exposing determinants that would otherwise remain undetected. In doing so, it confirms that subnational regions feature determinants which differ in many respects from national determinants and influence the effectiveness of EU environmental policies. The book contributes to a better understanding of the implementation deficit and presents a more refined picture of the EU environmental policy ’reality’.

Download or read book Global Environment Outlook 2000 written by United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The continued poverty of the majority of the planet's inhabitants and excessive consumption by the minority are the two major causes of environmental degradation The present course is unsustainable and postponing action is no longer an option. Inspired political leadership and intense cooperation across all regions and sectors will be needed to put both existing and new policy instruments to work. ' From the Synthesis Global Environment Outlook 2000 (GEO-2000) is a comprehensive and authoritative review and analysis of environmental conditions around the world. It is the flagship publication of the world's leading environmental organization, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and is based on information provided by more than 30 regional and international collaborating centres. The book presents a region-by-region analysis of the state of the world's environment, highlighting key global concerns and making recommendations for policy action. The regions covered include Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia and the Polar Areas. Chapter 1: Global Perspectives describes the main drivers of environmental change, such as the economy, population growth, political organization and regionalization, as well as potential impacts of recent global developments including the growth of the consumer culture, trade and international debt. Chapter 2: The State of the Environment provides a global and region-by-region overview of the environment at the end of the second millennium. The chapter covers global issues such as ozone, climate change, El Nifio and nitrogen loading, and universal issues of land and food, forests, biodiversity, freshwater, marine and coastal areas, atmosphere and urban areas. Chapter 3: Policy Responses reviews the broad range of policy instruments and responses being used to address environmental issues, including multilateral environmental agreements, and analyses the difficulties of compliance, implementation and assessment. Chapter 4: Future Perspectives looks at environmental issues that will require priority attention in the 21st century and some alternative policy options that could be used in the regions. Chapter 5: Outlook and Recommendations makes recommendations for future action based on the environmental legacy left by past and present policy and management systems. GEO-2000 will be the benchmark reference and guide to the state of the global environment. Written in clear, non-technical language and supported throughout by informative graphics and tables, it is essential reading for all those involved in environmental policy making, implementation and assessment, and for researchers and students of regional and global environmental issues. Download or read book Europe and Civil Society written by Carlo Ruzza and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-16 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe and Civil Society provides an in-depth examination of how public interest groups and social movements seek to influence the European policy-making process. The book is based on a comparison of the role of networks of activists and their allies--broadly defined as Movement Advocacy Coalitions--in influencing decision-making at the European Union level in three specific areas of policy-making: environmentalism, anti-racism and ethno-nationalist regionalism. It draws on systematic documentary analysis and an extensive series of interviews with activists and institutional actors to examine the role of public interest organizations in these three areas. This focus reflects topical societal concerns and facilitates new insights into the study of European policy-making, political sociology, and social movement research.
Book Synopsis Environmental Policy Integration by : Andrea Lenschow
Download or read book Environmental Policy Integration written by Andrea Lenschow and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating environmental policies into the policies of all other sectors is the core European environmental policy. But there has been no thorough investigation of the political process involved. This volume provides the first. It analyses the process of policy integration - the greening of public policy - across the relevant sectors and countries. It finds significant variation from sector to sector and from country to country, and analyses the reasons for this. (Surprisingly the UK, traditionally the 'dirty man' of Europe is far more actively engaged than environmental 'progressives' such as Germany.) It identifies the obstacles to integration and offers solutions for policy formulation, decision making and implementation at the relevant political levels.

Book Synopsis Protecting Our Environment by : Janet R. Hunter
Download or read book Protecting Our Environment written by Janet R. Hunter and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant changes in how the world approaches global environmental problems have occurred since the late 1970s. Countries have become increasingly aware of the "borderless" nature of environmental issues, i.e., that production and consumption in one country can spill over to affect another country's environment. Protecting Our Environment considers the successes that have been achieved in the European Union (EU), as well as issues the Union still faces regarding the protection of the environment in the future. Authors Janet R. Hunter and Zachary A. Smith identify the factors that have allowed the EU to form a successful environmental regime, including the development of the environmental management approach and the principles upon which it is based. They examine in detail the challenges that have been encountered in the implementation of environmental programs, and the solutions that have been developed to address those challenges. Also considered is how economic development and environmental protection have been reconciled within the EU. By analyzing the successful example of the EU, Protecting Our Environment provides a model for a contemporary approach to global environmental problems.

Book Synopsis Casebook on EU Environmental Law by : Ludwig Krämer
Download or read book Casebook on EU Environmental Law written by Ludwig Krämer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-08-30 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comments on fifty key judgments which the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance have given on European Community environmental law. For each judgment, the facts and procedures are described, followed by an extract of the essential parts of the judgment and a commentary which places the judgment in its legal, environmental and political context and develops the lines of reasoning of the Court. The fifty cases selected cover all substantive and procedural aspects of Community environmental law, as regards the provisions of the EC Treaty (cases 1 to 9), horizontal problems (cases 10 to 18), water and air (cases 19 to 25), products and noise (cases 26 to 32), nature protection (cases 33 to 38), waste management (cases 39 to 45) and procedural questions (cases 46 to 50). Particular emphasis is laid on commenting on recent judgments: thus, the oldest case discussed dates from 1991 and 43 of the 50 judgments date from 1996 or later. The book provides a clear insight into the jurisdiction of the European Courts; it will be of particular use to practitioners of national and Community environmental law, researchers, law students and administrators. It is written in a comprehensible style which also makes it a useful tool for non-lawyers who deal with European Community environmental law and policy.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive explanatory framework for understanding the European Community environmental law. It looks behind the technicalities of the European Union environmental law as it explains the purpose and effects of Community's rulemaking. The proposed explanatory framework is used to analyze several environmental issues such as air pollution, water pollution, waste management and biodiversity protection as well as strategic, planning and economic instruments and to provide normative direction for the future development of EC law. This book is innovative in that it examines environmental issues from both a Community and an international perspective exploring the inter-connection between International Law and Community rulemaking. This book is an indispensable source for those who wish to understand EC environmental law, students, scholars and practitioners of EC law, environmental law, international law and policy.
