This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1987, the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC) has been running sea ice forecasting systems in various regions of Navy interest (the Central Arctic, the Barents Sea, and the Greenland Sea). The Polar Ice Prediction System (PIPS1.1) predicts sea ice conditions in the Arctic basin, the Barents Sea, and the Greenland Sea at a resolution of 127 km. Two regional sea ice forecasting systems, the Polar Ice Prediction System - Barents Sea (RPIPS-B) and the Polar Ice Prediction System - Greenland Sea (RPIPS-G), also predict sea ice conditions in the Barents and Greenland Seas, respectively, at a higher resolution of 20-25 km. In 1995, the Naval Research Laboratory delivered to FNMOC a coupled ice-ocean system, the Polar Ice Prediction System 2.0 (PIPS2. 0), which predicts sea ice conditions of most of the ice-covered regions in the Northern Hemisphere. PIPS2.0 will replace the three existing operational forecast systems when it completes the final operational testing phase at FNMOC. PIPS2.0 uses as its basis the Hibler ice model and the Cox ocean model. PIPS2.0 has a resolution of approximately a quarter of a degree, which is similar to the resolution of the operational regional systems (RPIPS-B and RPIPS-G). This report briefly describes the main program and each of its subroutines.
Book Synopsis Long-Range Ice Forecasting System (LRIFS) Applied for the Beaufort Sea by : L. W. Davidson
Download or read book Long-Range Ice Forecasting System (LRIFS) Applied for the Beaufort Sea written by L. W. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied research conducted from 1984 to 1990 on behalf of the Environmental Studies Research Funds (ESRF) and Ice Centre Environment Canada (ICEC) has resulted in the implementation of an operational Long Range Ice (sea ice and iceberg severity) Forecasting System (LRIFS) at Ice Centre, Ottawa. The LRIFS system employs statistical models based on Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analyses of up to 40 years of regional surface and upper air weather data to predict abundance of sea ice and icebergs, in some locations up to six months prior to occurence. The system also makes provision of the use of ice anomaly data to predict future ice conditions. In the present work, this system has been generalized from its previous east coast base, and is now configured for use anywhere in the northern hemisphere. Major enhancements has been introduced to automate the identification of potentially viable meteorological predictors, and tests have been added to eliminate predictors showing artificial skill.

Book Synopsis Operational Analysis and Prediction of Ocean Wind Waves by : Madhav L. Khandekar
Download or read book Operational Analysis and Prediction of Ocean Wind Waves written by Madhav L. Khandekar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an attempt to compile the present state of knowledge on ocean wave analysis and prediction. The emphasis of the monograph is on the development of ocean wave analysis and predic tion procedures and their utility for real-time operations and appli cations. Most of the material in the monograph is derived from journal articles, research reports and recent conference proceedings; some of the basic material is extracted from standard text books on physical oceanography and wind waves. Ocean wave analysis and prediction is becoming an important activity in the meteorological and oceanographic services of many countries. The present status of ocean wave prediction may be compar able to the status of numerical weather prediction of the mid-sixties and early seventies when a number of weather prediction models were developed for research purposes, many of which were later put into operational use by meteorological services of several countries. The increased emphasis on sea-state analysis and prediction has created a need for a ready reference material on various ocean wave analysis and modelling techniques and their utility. The present monograph is aimed at fulfilling this need. The monograph should prove useful to the ocean wave modelling community as well as to marine forecasters, coastal engineers and offshore technologists. The monograph could also be used for a senior undergraduate (or a first year graduate) level course in ocean wave modelling and marine meteorology.

Book Synopsis Remote Sensing of Sea Ice in the Northern Sea Route by : Ola M. Johannessen
Download or read book Remote Sensing of Sea Ice in the Northern Sea Route written by Ola M. Johannessen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote Sensing of Sea Ice in the Northern Sea Route: Studies and Applications initially provides a history of the Northern Sea Route as an important strategic transport route for supporting the northern regions of Russia and cargo transportation between Europe and the Northern Pacific Basin. The authors then describe sea ice conditions in the Eurasian Arctic Seas and, using microwave satellite data, provide a detailed analysis of difficult sea ice conditions. Remote sensing techniques and the basic principles of SAR image formation are described, as well as the major satellite radar systems used for ice studies in the Arctic. The authors take a good look at the use of sensing equipment in experiments, including the ICE WATCH project used for monitoring the Northern Sea Route. The possibilities of using SAR remote sensing for ice navigation in the Northern Sea Route is also detailed, analysing techniques of automatic image processing and interpretation. A study is provided of regional drifting ice, fast ice and river ice in the coastal areas of the Arctic Seas. The book concludes with a review of the practical experience using SAR images for supporting navigation and offshore industrial activity, based on a series of experiments conducted with the Murmansk Shipping Company on board nuclear icebreakers.
Book Synopsis The Drift of Sea Ice by : Matti Leppäranta
Download or read book The Drift of Sea Ice written by Matti Leppäranta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents in The Drift of Sea Ice the fundamental laws of sea ice drift which come from the material properties of sea ice and the basic laws of mechanics. The resulting system of equations is analysed for the general properties of sea ice drift, the free drift model and analytical models for ice drift in the presence of internal friction, and the construction of numerical ice drift models is detailed. The science of sea ice drift through its 100-year history to the present day is explained. The text includes the geophysical theory, observations from field programs, and mathematical models. Topics covered include the science of sea ice drift, forecasting drift velocity based on volume, size and shape, sea ice ridging and remote sensing, modelling of the ice conditions, and finally the role of sea ice drift in research fields in ice-covered seas, oceanography, marine ecology and engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedures for preparing short-range (48-hour) forecasts and long-range (15- and 30-day) estimates of austral summer sea ice conditions in the western Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound are given. Magnitude and direction of short-period ice drift are related to pack concentration, topography, and thickness, surface currents, and forecasted surface wind velocities. Long-period ice estimates are based on analog techniques relating various environmental factors to pack growth, extent, and disintegration as well as using the progression of ice melt indicated by selected historical data. Examples of short-range ice forecasts and long-range estimates are given. Techniques are included for interpreting sea ice from satellite imagery.
