Book excerpt: A creel survey will be conducted to estimate sport angler effort, catch, and harvest of large (≥75 cm mid eye to tail fork length) early- and late-run Chinook salmon in the lower Kenai River between the Warren Ames Bridge (river mile [RM] 5.1) and Slikok Creek sanctuary area (RM 18.6). Creel survey estimates will be geographically stratified in relation to the RM 13.7 Kenai River Chinook salmon sonar to provide angler effort, catch, and harvest of large Chinook salmon. A standardized inriver netting project will be conducted in the Kenai River at RM 8.6 to index abundance and estimate the age, sex, and length (ASL) composition of large early- and late-run Chinook salmon. Inseason estimates of Chinook salmon catch and harvest, used in conjunction with sonar passage estimates, inseason catch rates, and the length of returning Chinook salmon from the inriver netting study are used by fisheries managers for inseason management decisions to achieve escapement goals. This plan covers the creel survey and inriver netting studies for the 2021–2023 seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Deshka River is the largest producer and has the largest sport fishery of Chinook salmon in the North Cook Inlet Management Area. The Deshka River weir has operated seasonally since 1995. A floating, resistance-board-weir is used at river mile (RM) 7 to enumerate Chinook and coho salmon and to collect age, sex, and length data from these species. The Deshka River sustainable escapement goal (SEG) range is currently 9,000–18,000 fish for Chinook salmon and 10,200–24,100 fish for coho salmon. Data collected at this weir are used to manage sport and commercial fisheries inseason and to develop and evaluate escapement goals. This project is also used as a platform to collect harvest data upstream of RM 7, passage data of other fish species, environmental data, and it provides recapture data for the greater Susitna River drainage Chinook salmon mark–recapture project.

Book excerpt: Sport anglers fishing from shore in the Juneau area of Southeast Alaska target and harvest Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, primarily during April - August, the duration of which can be truncated due to wild stock management measures. Angler effort, catch, and harvest data will be collected from June through August 2022 from shore-based anglers at 2 prioritized locations in the Juneau area associated with Alaska hatchery release sites. Harvest sampling will be used to collect biological samples and associated data to estimate the age, length, and genetic composition of the Chinook salmon harvest. Chinook salmon will be inspected for missing adipose fins, indicating the head should be removed to recover a coded wire tag. Contributions of hatchery and wild coded-wire-tagged stocks to the sport harvest will be estimated for both locations.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to determine Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha harvest by sport anglers on the Situk River and the age components of that harvest. Additionally, sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka harvest will be determined and various methods of angler use patterns for both species will be recorded. Creel sampling techniques will be used to collect catch, harvest, effort and biological information from the Situk River for this purpose. This information is used to manage for the Chinook salmon biological escapement goal for the Situk River as per the Situk-Ahrnklin and Lost River Chinook salmon Management Plan, along with achieving the Situk River sockeye salmon biological escapement goal. Inriver abundance for both Situk River Chinook and sockeye is obtained from another project with a fish weir, and escapement is calculated by subtracting the above-weir sport harvest estimate of this project from that weir count. Additionally, the Chinook salmon age component information of the harvest gathered here is required for yearly stock assessment models to predict the following years run and set preseason management regulations.

Book excerpt: An ongoing coded-wire tag project, used as part of a stock assessment program for Chilkat River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch, will be conducted during fall 2020 and spring 2021 to provide estimates of smolt abundance and marine harvest for Chinook and coho salmon. This project uses modified Peterson 2-event mark-recapture methods to estimate smolt abundance, and port and creel sampling of coded-wire tags in mixed stock commercial and sport fisheries to estimate marine harvest for both species. Juvenile salmon will be measured for length and weight, marked with adipose fin clips, and tagged with coded wire tags in fall 2020 (juvenile Chinook salmon) and spring 2021 (Chinook and coho salmon smolt) as event 1 of the mark-recapture study. During event 2, adult Chinook salmon will be sampled for missing adipose fins, coded wire tags, age, sex, and length in Chilkat River fishwheels and drift gillnets, which are operated in the lower Chilkat River as part of a separate adult mark-recapture project. Adult Chinook salmon will be also sampled for missing adipose fins, coded wire tags, and age, sex, and length during Chilkat River drainage spawning grounds surveys to complete event 2 sampling. Coho salmon will also be sampled as adults during event 2 in the lower Chilkat River fishwheels. Age composition of Chinook salmon adults will be estimated by scale ageing techniques; age composition of coho salmon smolt and adults will also be estimated. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game uses these data to make local and regional management decisions. Chilkat Chinook salmon is a Pacific Salmon Commission exploitation rate and escapement indicator stock and has recently been added to the base model of abundance indicator stocks for the Chinook Technical Committee, which influences coastwide management.

Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) stocks hatchery-reared Chinook and coho salmon smolt in numerous locations throughout Southcentral Alaska to improve or create terminal sport fisheries in order to meet the demand on sport fishery resources. This project estimates adipose finclip quality and weight composition for Chinook and coho salmon smolt releases. The success of stocking hatchery smolt depends on numerous variables, many associated with the hatchery program. Marking, data collection, and reporting are monitored and standardized for each release so that meaningful comparisons can be made among hatchery releases. Meaningful comparisons may in turn allow project managers to better understand factors critical to the success of smolt stocking projects and to improve existing programs.

Book excerpt: This plan describes the coded-wire tagging of juvenile Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha on the Unuk River for the 2019 and 2020 brood years, which covers the coded-wire tagging of parr in fall of 2020 and 2021 and smolt in spring of 2021 and 2022, and sampling returning adults for age, sex, length, and coded-wire tags in escapement from the 2022 through 2027 return years. This study provides estimates of smolt and parr abundance, overwinter (freshwater) survival, mean lengths of juveniles, and harvest information of Chinook salmon originating from the Unuk River in Southeast Alaska. A separate project will be conducted on the Unuk River that employs aerial and foot survey peak counts to estimate large (≥660 mm mid eye to fork of tail length) adult Chinook salmon returning to the river in 2020 and 2021. The primary goals of this and the companion study are to estimate inriver run size, total run size, marine harvest-exploitation rate and harvest distribution, smolt and parr abundance, marine survival (smolt to adult) and overwinter survival (parr to smolt). The Alaska Department of Fish and Game uses this information to make local and regional management decisions, and the Pacific Salmon Commission uses the data for coastwide management and stock assessment through the Chinook Technical Committee.

This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report amends ROP.SF.2A.2020.04 by extending its primary objectives for an additional year. This project has 2 main goals: 1) assess the status of the Ninilchik River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) stock, and 2) collect Chinook salmon broodstock for supplementation of the Ninilchik River and stocking of terminal saltwater fishery locations in Kachemak Bay. After the escapement goal is reviewed in 2023, Chinook salmon escapement monitoring will transition from the broodstock collection weir at RKM 7.7 to the weir at RKM 4.1. The downstream monitoring location provides full enumeration of wild and hatchery-reared escapements. After paired counts at both weir locations are made, the current SEG, associated with the upper weir, will be updated with reference to the lower weir. The resulting lower-weir goal will better reflect the whole escapement in the Ninilchik River. The complete enumeration of the hatchery-reared run and age sampling will also provide estimates of survival rates of hatchery broods and will provide harvest rates in years when the fishery prohibits retention of wild Chinook salmon. These estimates will help clarify the contribution that hatchery-reared Chinook salmon make to the Ninilchik River sport fishery.
