Book excerpt: The Falklands/Malvinas Conflict of 1982 makes an excellent case for reviewing the application of operational art in a modern, predominantly naval operation. The purpose of this paper is to provide the basis for a seminar review of operational art, particularly as it applies to joint task force (JTF) operations.

Book excerpt: On 2 April 1982, after more than 16 years of inconclusive diplomatic negotiations with Great Britain, Argentina launched Operativo ROSARIO, a military campaign designed to take by military means what the Argentine government could not secure by political means: the Islas Malvinas or what the British and the Islanders call the Falklands. As happens in many such instances, the Argentine government miscalculated the political resolve and military response of their British opponent. Refusing to accept the Argentine military action as a “fait accompli”, the British government responded to the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands with Operation CORPORATE, a military campaign to regain her lost territory. Great Britain, a major world political power and NATO member, and Argentina, a 3rd world nation with major power aspirations, resorted to military force to resolve their political differences over the future of a small cluster of mostly uninhabited islands in the South Atlantic. Thus began the Falkland Islands conflict. This paper will analyze the Falkland Islands conflict from the viewpoint of an operational commander. To facilitate this process, three general areas will be reviewed: (1) political considerations, (2) strategic objectives, and (3) operational factors, including objectives, centers of gravity (COGs) and employment of forces. Based on my conclusions, specific recommendations will be offered which directly impact on the operational level of war for the U.S. commander.

Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the definition of operational art. While it does not propose to offer a definition which will forever remove doubt as to the meaning of operational art, it does offer good suggestions as to how operational art might be defined. In his effort to better define the operational art, the author examines a recent military operation--the Falklands War. This is done to identify whether the Falklands War was, in fact, an example of operational art, and if so, what aspects of the war can be used to better define the operational art. The sequence adopted for the paper is to first address operational art historically, offering some ideas as to how it might be defined. Next the paper addresses the historical background of the events leading up to the Falklands War and the operations in the Falklands by both the British and the Argentines. Finally, the author develops the thought that the operational art is an inherent part of the achievement of strategic goals and is not necessarily related to force size. That is to say, whether or not the operational art is being used is not determined by the size of the force being used.
Book Synopsis Air Power in the Falklands Conflict by : John Shields
Download or read book Air Power in the Falklands Conflict written by John Shields and published by Air World. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Royal Air Force veteran of the Falklands Conflict presents a comprehensive, myth-busting study of the air campaign. In the spring of 1982, Argentina and the UK engaged in tense combat over control of the Falkland Islands. The ten weeks of fighting are often portrayed with a decidedly one-sided narrative: either heroic Argentine pilots relentlessly pressing home their attacks, or the Sea Harrier force utterly dominating its Argentine enemies. In Air Power in the Falklands Conflict, RAF veteran John Shields presents a detailed and even-handed analysis of the Falkland Islands air war. As an RAF officer, John Shields spent two and a half years in the Falklands as an air defense navigator. Using recently released primary source material, Shields looks at the air campaign at the operational level. He develops a considered view of what should have occurred, and contrasts it with what actually happened. In so doing, John Shields has produced a comprehensive account of the air campaign that has demolished many of the enduring myths of this Cold War conflict.

Book Synopsis The Falklands War: Understanding the Power of Context in Shaping Argentine Strategic Decisions by : Lt. Scott C. Nietzel

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis uses a historical case study approach to examine the impact of context on shaping decision making during the conduct of war. The case analyzed is the war between Argentina and Great Britain for control of the Falkland Islands in 1982. This thesis examines the relative strength of the belligerents’ positions using the concepts of force, time and space from current operational warfare doctrine and shows that British victory in the conflict was by no means a foregone conclusion. Next, an exploration of Argentine conduct of the war highlights and discusses in detail mistakes and errors in judgment that had direct impacts on battlefield results. These decisions are then traced to the context in which they were made. It is this context, specifically the power of limited war culture and to a lesser extent the strength of the military polity as a constituency, that explains the Argentine defeat in the Falklands.

Download or read book Fleet Air Defense in the Falkland Islands Conflict: A Failure in Operational Protection? written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the hastily composed British task force was dispatched to liberate the Falkland Islands in the spring of 1982 the difficult challenge of operational protection began. Not only was the task force not equipped for this type of operation but the capabilities and intent of the enemy was unknown. Upon reaching the South Atlantic the British task force commander faced a variety of decisions on courses of action and faced the dilemma of protecting an unprepared fleet and hastily concocted amphibious landing against a superior number of opposing aircraft. The task force commander's operational scheme has been questioned and the grievous cost of recapturing the islands is still controversial. In this paper I will examine what effect the operational factors of time, force and space had on the task force commanders available courses of action. I will also look at how the task force commander dealt with the dilemma of protecting a shifting operational center of gravity. I will look at the missing components of operational protection and how the operational scheme was developed in hopes of minimizing this critical vulnerability.
Book Synopsis Exocet Falklands by : Ewen Southby-Tailyour
Download or read book Exocet Falklands written by Ewen Southby-Tailyour and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a revelatory account of three un-tabulated special forces operations, PLUM DUFF, MIKADO and KETTLEDRUM, that were tasked to destroy Argentina's Exocet missiles during the 1982 Falkland's campaign. In that context alone this book is of international military importance. ?Using previously unknown material and through interviewing key players who have remained silent for 30 years, Ewen Southby-Tailyour has finally established the truth: that it has taken so long reflects the sensitivities, both military and personal, involved. ?Interviews with the SAS officer commanding Operation PLUM DUFF, members of the reconnaissance patrol for Operation MIKADO, plus the navigator of the helicopter that flew eight troopers into Tierra del Fuego, has allowed the author to describe the tortuous events that led, instead, to a significant survival story. ?The RAF pilots ordered to conduct an 'assault-landing' of two Hercules onto Rio Grande air base during Operation MIKADO have spoken of the extraordinary procedures they developed: so have the commander of the SBS and the captain of the British submarine involved in Operation KETTLEDRUM. ?The Super Ätendard pilots who sank HMS Sheffield and MV Atlantic Conveyor and then 'attacked' HMS Invincible, plus a key member of the Argentine special forces and the brigadier defending Rio Grande, add credence, depth and gravitas to the saga: as does an equally revealing interview with the SIS (MI6) officer who led the world-wide search for Exocets on the black market. ?Disturbing over-confidence by commanders at home was finely counter-balanced by stirring accounts of inspiring physical and moral courage across the South Atlantic. ?Exocet Falklands is a ground-breaking work of investigative military history from which many salutary lessons can be learned.??As featured in the Daily Record, Western Morning News, Plymouth Herald and on BBC Radio Wiltshire.
Book Synopsis The Falklands War by : Gordon Ramsey
Download or read book The Falklands War written by Gordon Ramsey and published by After the Battle. This book was released on 2009-03-30 with total page 1786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982, Argentina rashly gambled that a full-scale invasion of the Falkland Islands — ownership of which had been disputed with Great Britain for over a century — would put an end to years of political wrangling. However Britain’s response was to immediately dispatch a task force to recover the islands, by force if necessary. The ‘conflict’ which followed (a formal declaration of war was never given) lasted ten weeks from Argentine invasion to British liberation, the white heat of battle using 20th century technology contrasting with bitter hand-to-hand bayonet fighting in inhospitable conditions. Eyewitness accounts by the participants of both sides, and islanders, leave us in no doubt as to the ferocity of the combat on land, sea, and in the air. Comparison photography in color of all the battlefields, the crash sites of the aircraft shot down, the relics and the remains, together with portraits of those who lost their lives and the battlefield memorials, serve as a graphic testimony to their endeavors, 25 years after the battle. A Roll of Honour lists the casualties of both sides and, for the first time, the graves of all the British fallen — both on the islands and in the United Kingdom — have been visited and photographed as a lasting record of all those who made the supreme sacrifice.
Book Synopsis The Falklands War by : Martin Middlebrook
Download or read book The Falklands War written by Martin Middlebrook and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of the brief 1980s conflict between the UK and Argentina, from the author of The First Day on the Somme. With the surprise Argentine invasion of the remote Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982, the United Kingdom found itself at war. Due to the resolve of a determined Prime Minister and the resourcefulness of the Armed Forces, a task force, codenamed Operation Corporate, was quickly dispatched. Remarkably, just over two months later, the islands were liberated, and the invaders defeated. By any standards this was an outstanding feat of arms, cooperation made possible by political resolve, sound planning, strong leadership and the courage and determination of the British forces. Martin Middlebrook, the renowned military historian, has skillfully weaved the many strands of this extraordinary achievement into a fascinating, thorough and highly readable account. Thanks to his meticulous research he covers action at sea, on the land and in the air as well as providing the strategic overview. The author’s use of many first-hand accounts reveals what it was like to be part of this audacious military endeavor. The experiences of the Falkland Islanders during the Argentine occupation are also included. Thirty years on, Middlebrook’s The Falklands War is still an authoritative and thoroughly readable account of this historic enterprise. Originally published as Operation Corporate: The Story of the Falklands War, 1982. Praise for The Falklands War “The author’s descriptions of confrontations in the air, on the sea and on the various battlegrounds are superb, as are his explanations of the use of new weapons, such as the Sea Harrier and the Exocet missile.” —Publishers Weekly

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the political atmosphere and events leading to the Falklands war and concludes that the war was caused by critical misperceptions on both sides. Analyzes British response with emphasis on force selection, strategy, “Jointness,” and the role of airpower. Suggests that British victory hinged on a well-coordinated, joint warfighting effort, and highlights the key role played by airpower. Concludes with a caution concerning the potential for worldwide perceptions of reduced US power projection capabilities in light of budget-induced force reductions. Warns that these perceptions could lead, as they did in the Falklands, to military conflict.

Book Synopsis Amphibious Assault Falklands by : Michael Clapp
Download or read book Amphibious Assault Falklands written by Michael Clapp and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A British Naval commander’s eyewitness account of the 1982 war in the South Atlantic. Since he was in charge of the amphibious operations in the Falklands War, it goes without saying that there is no one better qualified to tell the story of that aspect of the campaign than Commodore Michael Clapp. Here he describes, with considerable candor, some of the problems met in a Navy racing to war and finding it necessary to recreate a largely abandoned operational technique in a somewhat ad hoc fashion. During the time it took to “go south,” some sense of order was imposed and a not very well defined command structure evolved, this was not done without generating a certain amount of friction. He tells of why San Carlos Water was chosen for the assault and the subsequent inshore operations. Michael Clapp and his small staff made their stand and can claim a major role in the defeat of the Argentine Air and Land Forces.

Book Synopsis The Regionalization of Warfare by : James Brown
Download or read book The Regionalization of Warfare written by James Brown and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three wars have dominated world events in recent years: The conflict which erupted between the United Kingdom and Argentina over the Falkland/Malvinas Islands; the multinational conflict in Lebanon involving Irsaeli, Syrian, and FLO forces in Lebanon; and the savage struggles between ground and air units of the Iranian and Iraqi forces. The scale and intensity of these wars, their potential for global conflict, make them crucial for an understanding among citizens in general, and defense and political analysts in particular. The authors and contributors to this most unusual volume come to several common conclusions: professionalism is a crucial factor in military effectiveness, but not necessarily dependent on modes of recruitment; high technology is crucial, but only in relation to the quality and training of the personnel; public support is necessary to sustain military morale in democratic and authoritarian regimes alike. These are only some of the incisive findings registered and explored in The Regionalization of Warfare. The volume a'ssembles experts not only on these three major regional and interregional conflicts, but on current U.S. defense policies; Soviet strategic interests in Middle East and Persian Gulf conflicts; and a series of papers on lessons learned and unlearned as a result of these "small wars" of the early 1980s. For those interested in military history, global strategy, and regional rivalries, this -collection of finely written, sophisticated papers will prove to be of intense concern.
