Open Distributed Processing (ODP) systems are those that support heterogenous distributed applications both within and between autonomous organizations. Many challenges must be overcome before ODP systems can be fully realized. This book describes the recent advances in the theory and practice of developing, deploying and managing open distributed systems. Applications of these systems include but are not limited to telecommunication, medical and large scale transaction processing and electronic commerce systems. All of these are currently developed on distributed platforms. For anybody working in industry or research in this field, Open Distributed Processing and Distributed Platforms will prove an invaluable text.

Book excerpt: Object-based Distributed Computing is being established as the most pertinent basis for the support of large, heterogeneous computing and telecommunications systems. The advent of Open Object-based Distributed Systems (OODS) brings new challenges and opportunities for the use and development of formal methods. Formal Methods for Open Object-based Distributed Systems presents the latest research in several related fields, and the exchange of ideas and experiences in a number of topics including: formal models for object-based distributed computing; semantics of object-based distributed systems and programming languages; formal techniques in object-based and object oriented specification, analysis and design; refinement and transformation of specifications; multiple viewpoint modeling and consistency between different models; formal techniques in distributed systems verification and testing; types, service types and subtyping; specification, verification and testing of quality of service constraints and formal methods and the object life cycle. It contains the selected proceedings of the International Workshop on Formal Methods for Open Object-based Distributed Systems, sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing, and based in Paris, France, in March 1996.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) is an international standard that provides a solid basis for describing and building widely distributed systems and applications in a systematic way. It stresses the need to build these systems with evolution in mind by identifying the concerns of major stakeholders and then expressing the design as a series of linked viewpoints. Although RM-ODP has been a standard for more than ten years, many practitioners are still unaware of it. Building Enterprise Systems with ODP: An Introduction to Open Distributed Processing offers a gentle pathway to the essential ideas that constitute ODP and shows how these ideas can be applied when designing and building challenging systems. It provides an accessible introduction to the design principles for software engineers and enterprise architects. The book also explains the benefits of using viewpoints to produce simpler and more flexible designs and how ODP can be applied to service engineering, open enterprise, and cloud computing. The authors include guidelines for using the Unified Modeling LanguageTM (UML) notation and for structuring and writing system specifications. They elucidate how this fits into the model-driven engineering tool chain via approaches, such as Model-Driven Architecture® (MDA). They also demonstrate the power of RM-ODP for the design and organization of complex distributed IT systems in e-government, e-health, and energy and transportation industries. All concepts and ideas in the book are illustrated through a single running example that describes the IT support needed by a medium-sized company as it grows and develops. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "A goal of Open Distributed Processing (ODP) is to allow the interconnection of existing heterogeneous systems and to support the introduction of new services at run-time (to allow for system evolution). One of the greatest problems in achieving this goal is managing the heterogeneity of the environment. The Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) introduces a Type Repository function as a support for overcoming this problem by providing a framework for describing and relating the types of information, services, and entities in an open distributed system. This report presents a brief overview of type description and type management in RM-ODP, and focuses on the development of a type model and strategies for type management for use in an open distributed environment. It considers related approaches in object- oriented databases, persistent programming, and distributed system architectures, and evaluates them with respect to the requirements of ODP. It further considers issues related to the construction of a Type Manager providing tools for type description and type management to operate in an open distributed environment."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2002, this book presents techniques in the application of formal methods to object-based distributed systems. A major theme of the book is how to formally handle the requirements arising from OO distributed systems, such as dynamic reconfiguration, encapsulation, subtyping, inheritance, and real-time aspects. These may be supported either by enhancing existing notations, such as UML, LOTOS, SDL and Z, or by defining fresh notations, such as Actors, Pi-calculus and Ambients. The major specification notations and modelling techniques are introduced and compared by leading researchers. The book also includes a description of approaches to the specification of non-functional requirements, and a discussion of security issues. Researchers and practitioners in software design, object-oriented computing, distributed systems, and telecommunications systems will gain an appreciation of the relationships between the major areas of concerns and learn how the use of object-oriented based formal methods provides workable solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword A variety of technological advances have taken place since the early days of computer networking in the sixties and the present distributed systems of the nineties. The major concern of the past was the distribution of functions aimed at providing reliable and high perfomance data transmission facilities for different geographical spans, from local to global areas. Currently, the area of greatest interest appears to focus on that of distributed applications. M. Stonebraker's "Your company is distributed so should your data be" augurs this shift of focus towards a more complete coverage of distributed systems technology. One of the reasons that this process of technological advance required approxirnately thirty years was the relatively slow acceptance of the concept "Openness". Openness means, intuitively, that different components from different manufacturers produced by different groups are able to interact and cooperate with each other. It is clear that the need for Openness arose step by step with the consequence that the technological irnplications and concepts were developed in parallel with the need for using them. The work on "Open Systems Interconnection (OSI)" began in the late seventies (1977) under the sponsorship of the International Standardization Organization. Five years later the "Open Systems Interconnection Reference Model (OSI-RM)" was born. This framework for the development of standards covers data transport issues (up to Layer 4) as weIl as some application issues (File Transfer, etc.; up to Layer 7).

Book excerpt: Client/Server applications are of increasing importance in industry, and have been improved by advanced distributed object-oriented techniques, dedicated tool support and both multimedia and mobile computing extensions. Recent responses to this trend are standardized distributed platforms and models including the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) of the Open Software Foundation (OS F), Open Distributed Processing (ODP), and the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) of the Object Management Group (OMG). These proceedings are the compilation of papers from the technical stream of the IFIPIIEEE International Conference on Distributed Platforms, Dresden, Germany. This conference has been sponsored by IFIP TC6.1, by the IEEE Communications Society, and by the German Association of Computer Science (GI -Gesellschaft fur Informatik). ICDP'96 was organized jointly by Dresden University of Technology and Aachen University of Technology. It is closely related to the International Workshop on OSF DCE in Karlsruhe, 1993, and to the IFIP International Conference on Open Distributed Processing. ICDP has been designed to bring together researchers and practitioners who are studying and developing new methodologies, tools and technologies for advanced client/server environ ments, distributed systems, and network applications based on distributed platforms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparison of Posix Open System Environment (Ose) And Open Distributed Processing (Odp) Reference Models Advances in technology, giving increasing importance to information service networks, and personal workstations are two factors which permit the construction of distributed applications running on a large set of interconnected systems. With the increasing need to interconnect information processing systems, distributed systems are becoming very important. Organizations need to exchange information, both inside the organization and between cooperating organizations. Many organizations are becoming dependent on distributed computing systems. When a distributed processing system stops providing the service required by its users, an entire factory's production may stop, a bank cannot conduct its normal transactions or an airline cannot make reservations. Management of these heterogeneous software and hardware environments, in order to supply and maintain the services required, is one of the most difficult problems facing computer users today.
