Book excerpt: The increasing concern with indoor air quality has led to air-quality standards with increased ventilation rates. Although increasing the volume flow rate of outside air is advisable from the perspective of air-quality, it is detrimental to energy consumption, since the outside air has to be brought to the comfort condition before it is insufflated to the conditioned ambient. Moreover, the humidity load carried within outside air has challenging HVAC engineers to design cooling units which are able to satisfactorily handle both sensible and latent contributions to the thermal load. This constitutes a favorable scenario for the use of solid desiccants to assist the cooling units. In fact, desiccant wheels have been increasingly applied by HVAC designers, allowing distinct processes for the air cooling and dehumidification. In fact, the ability of solid desiccants in moisture removal is effective enough to allow the use of evaporative coolers, in opposition to the traditional vapor-compression cycle, resulting in an ecologically sound system which uses only water as the refrigerant. Desiccant Assisted Cooling: Fundamentals and Applications presents different approaches to the mathematical modeling and simulation of desiccant wheels, as well as applications in thermal comfort and humidity controlled environments. Experts in the field discuss topics from enthalpy, lumped models for heat and mass transfer, and desiccant assisted radiant cooling systems, among others. Aimed at air-conditioning engineers and thermal engineering researchers, this book can also be used by graduate level students and lecturers in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air conditioning system is one of the major consumers of electrical energy in many parts of the world today. It represents between 40 and 70% of the energy consumption in commercial buildings. The demand of energy for air conditioning systems is expected to increase further in the next decades due to the population growth, the new economic boom, and the urbanization development. The rapid growth of air conditioning and electricity consumption will contribute further to climate change if fossil and nonrenewable resources are used. More energy-efficient and renewable energy-based air conditioning systems to accomplish space cooling are needed. This book intends to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in sustainable air conditioning technologies and focus on the most recent research and development on green air conditioning systems including energy-efficient and renewable energy-based air conditioning systems.

Book excerpt: Active Solar Systems is volume 6 in a series that surveys advances in solar energy research since the oil shock of the early 1970s. Books in the series document in particular the period 1973 to 1985, which spawned a rich array of federally financed technological programs and developments facilitating the practical use of solar energy. The twenty-two contributions in Active Solar Systems introduce design, analysis, and control methods for active systems and cover advances in the interconnected technologies for water heating, space heating, and space cooling. They show that, with effective marketing and with environmental costs factored into individual consumer decisions, there is strong potential for solar water heating and space heating, and that solar cooling has potential but needs further development to become commercially viable. The details of the materials involved in these technologies are covered in volume 5, Solar Collectors, Energy Storage, and Materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a concise, systematic treatment of essential theories and practical aspects of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. It is designed for students pursuing courses in mechanical engineering both at diploma and degree level with a view to equipping them with a fundamental background necessary to understand the latest methodologies used for the design of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. After reviewing the physical principles, the text focuses on the refrigeration cycles commonly used in air-conditioning applications in tropical climates. The subject of psychrometry for analysing the various thermodynamic processes in air conditioning is particularly dealt with in considerable detail. The practical design problems require comprehensive use of tables and charts prepared by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This text incorporates such tables and charts so that the students are exposed to solving real-life design problems with the help of ASHRAE Tables. Finally, the book highlights the features, characteristics and selection criteria of hardware including the control equipment. It also provides the readers with the big picture in respect of the latest developments such as thermal storage air conditioning, desiccant cooling, chilled ceiling cooling, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort. Besides the students, the book would be immensely useful to practising engineers as a ready reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive summary on the energy systems used in green buildings, with a particular focus on solar energy - the most common renewable energy source applied in this field. With the growing concern about environmental protections, the concepts of green building have been widely promoted and implemented in nowadays building designs and constructions. Among all, sustainable energy systems, including energy harvesting, conversion, and storage, is one of most important design factors in green buildings. Unlike traditional energy systems which highly rely on fossil fuel, green buildings utilize renewable energy source or high efficient energy systems, or both, to provide environmental friendly, low carbon waste energy. The most updated concepts, designs, technologies developed and implemented in heat pumps, cooling systems, power systems, and energy storage will be discussed here in details. This handbook is subdivided into 7-9 main sections to provide an in-depth discussion from foundational principles to practical techniques. In addition, different cases about green energy systems implemented in global will be discussed. The book will be structured easy-to-read, to make it more accessible to graduate students and professionals in diverse scientific and engineering communities, including applied physics, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, material engineering, and chemical engineering.
