Existem muitos recursos à considerar na Web Semântica, mas o mais importante é a ontologia escrita em Web Ontology Language (OWL). O presente volume busca uma abordagem diferenciada e, por isso, não abrange tudo o que se pode fazer com OWL, nem mesmo todos os seus elementos. Materiais técnicos são facilmente obtidos na Web, ao contrário dos aspectos abordados aqui, ausentes na maioria das outras obras. Explica-se e exemplifica-se um conjunto de constructos – para representar entidades, relações e valores ̶ que engloba tudo o que é preciso para criar de ontologias OWL. Explicam-se também as bases do raciocínio automático, fornecendo um sumário de inferências padrão. O texto busca ser acessível aos não iniciados, sem desvalorizar a tradição reflexiva da Ciência da Informação.

O conhecimento é analisado não mais como um produto puro da mente, mas é compreendido como construído, descrito e expresso na linguagem. Não há conhecimento sem linguagem. A forma como os conceitos de saber e certeza são utilizados tem relação com as formas de vida. Elas são a base e o fundamento para entender as causas e razões relacionadas a uma epistemologia regionalizada e contextualizada. Em Wittgenstein, não há mais uma epistemologia autorreflexiva e mentalista, mas discursiva e relacionada aos seus modos de utilização na vida. O conhecimento é pensável a partir dos limites da linguagem e não mais a partir de limites lógicos e transcendentais como em Kant, por exemplo. Eu chamo essa forma de analisar o conhecimento de epistemologia crítico-discursiva. Essa atividade filosófica analisa a gramática dos usos de conceitos epistêmicos, como saber e certeza, atrelados às formas de vida. Isso está diretamente ligado à ideia de que o significado está no uso. O significado está no uso e o uso é a condição de possibilidade de avaliação dos limites do significativo e do não significativo, do relevante e do irrelevante. A atividade filosófica é assim, crítico-terapêutica, pois visa a eliminar os mal-entendidos da linguagem em geral e das ciências em particular. Os problemas são resolvidos a partir da identificação das causas ou razões que estão presentes na sua origem e a origem de tais problemas está no modo como usamos a linguagem. Para clarificar a compreensão do significado, as perguntas podem ser: como são usados os conceitos? Quais as formas e regras que coordenam esse uso? As ações linguísticas realizadas estão imbricadas de que modo com as formas de vida? Esclarecer esse tipo de questão é uma forma relevante e atual de entender a relação entre linguagem, conhecimento e realidade.
