Book excerpt: Economic and social factors are creating changes in Ontario's labour market, changes which have implications for the mix of jobs available to workers, for the skills and levels of training they receive, and for the ability of employers to recruit qualified workers. This review highlights recent changes in Ontario's labour market which have ramifications for the province's economic growth, including labour supply and demand, global trends, and labour markets for high-skill technical occupations. Labour supply and demand trends are provided for 1960 to 1996 in terms of the province's economic context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to analyze changes in the job mix of Ontario's economy and their implications for skills development. It reviews a number of trends in Ontario's economy that have affected demand in the labour market during the past 28 years. It also provides an analysis of how the mix of jobs in Ontario has evolved over time in response to these changes in the economy. It uses a projection to the year 2000 of trends in the demand for labour across occupations to offer a number of insights into future shifts in the occupational mix and their implications for the educational and training requirements of the work force. In addition, it presents a projection of labour supply growth and changes in the demographic characteristics of the work force during the decade ahead, along with a review of sources of new labour force entrants with advanced levels of education and training. It concludes with a discussion of labour market issues that will become much more important in the 1990s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study attempts to probe the causes and the impacts of unemployment in one local area, in Metropolitan Windsor in mid-1964. It attempts also to assess the effectiveness of existing measures designed to alleviate local unemployment and to eliminate its cause. In the process, it advances a number of policy suggestions. The study is based principally on a questionnaire survey of a random sample of 1,000 persons either currently or recently unemployed (500 of each)....In addition to the direct questionnaire survey of the unemployed - the supply side of the market - a limited survey of labour demand was made through a questionnaire directed to a sample of leading employers. The purpose was to determine the occupations in which vacancies exist, and the number of vacancies, which were compared with the number of unemployed in such occupations. Special problems in labour recruitment and the approach to these by individual firms, were probed in subsequent interviews with selected employers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Income inequality has skyrocketed in Canada over the past few decades. The rich have become richer, while the average household income has deteriorated and job quality has plummeted. Common explanations for these trends point to globalization, technology, or other forces largely beyond our control. But, as Jobs with Inequality shows, there is nothing inevitable about inequality. Rather, runaway inequality is the result of politics and policies - what governments have done to aid the rich and boost finance and what they have not done to uphold the interests of workers. Drawing on new tax and income data, John Peters tells the story of how inequality is unfolding in Canada today by examining post-democracy, financialization, and labour market deregulation. Timely and novel, Jobs with Inequality explains how and why business and government have rewritten the rules of the economy to the advantage of the few, and considers why progressive efforts to reverse these trends have so regularly run aground.

It looks at conceptual issues associated with services, the factors which have traditionally distinguished service activity from the production of goods, and how innovations in technology and industrial organization are altering these orthodox distinctions. It focuses on explanations for the rapid expansions of the service sector, and documents the shift from goods to services. It also examines the issue of nonstandard employment in Canada, and focuses on the skill content of jobs. In addition, it addresses the relationship between human capital and employment outcomes, and Canada's capacity for developing human resources. It reports the results of a major Economic Council study of income distribution trends. Finally, it presents conclusions and policy implications.
