Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshore oil and gas drilling operations take place in some of the world's most biologically productive oceanic waters. An ongoing concern related to the development of this industry is that exposure to contaminants from waste discharges may cause ill effects on organisms and their habitat. Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) programs are undertaken to verify environmental impact assessment predictions, to detect any unforeseen effects, and to help identify cause-effect relationships. EEM has been carried out worldwide for many offshore developments, and much has been learned about the fate of drilling and production contaminants and their biological effects. EEM programs have rapidly evolved in response to new knowledge on the transport, fate, and effects of potential contaminants; changes in regulatory requirements; and improved impact assessment technologies and statistical approaches for data interpretation. In May 2003, an international group of scientists, environmental managers, and industry representatives shared their expertise and new knowledge at the Offshore Oil and Gas Environmental Effects Monitoring Workshop. The participants reviewed the status of current offshore oil and gas EEM programs and identified future research needs to advance our understanding of the impacts of the offshore oil and gas industry. This book represents a selected number of peer-reviewed papers from workshop participants, covering a range of topics including regional experience from past and ongoing EEM programs; environmental management issues such as risk assessment and decision-making processes; the development of predictive risk assessment models; and new approaches and technologies formonitoring potential alterations in benthic, pelagic, and tropospheric ecosystem components. This book will be of use to scientists, environmental managers, regulators, and industry representatives, as well as members of the general public wishing to improve their understanding on the application of offshore oil and gas EEM programs for the protection of our ocean environment and its resources.

Book excerpt: This report assesses the environmental risks, impacts and risk management measures associated with the conventional exploration and production of hydrocarbons within Europe. It also covers processes and technologies associated with offshore unconventional activities. The study used a lifecycle approach to break down exploration and production of hydrocarbons into five stages following a similar approach used for previous studies for the European Commission. Sub-stages and processes were then identified for each life-cycle stage for both offshore and onshore. For each process and sub-stage the environmental risks were assessed based on 8 environmental aspects (e.g. noise) for offshore and 10 for onshore. To conduct this assessment the risks and impacts of each aspect were reviewed against a risk rating system, based on consequence and likelihood. The assessment was conducted using a combination of data gathered from the oil and gas industry, including environmental impact assessments/statements, and expert judgement. The impacts of management measures on risks were also assessed. Finally, the risks and impacts identified for onshore unconventional exploration and production from a preceding study were compared to the risks and impacts of offshore conventional exploration and production in this study to determine the environmental risks of offshore unconventionals at sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time it was first published in 1998, Shipping and the Environment has been the leading text on international and US law and practice in this field. Written by renowned legal and insurance practitioners with over 100 years of combined specialist experience, including first-hand knowledge of many major incidents, it is not only a comprehensive reference work but an abundant source of introductory material and practical insights, all explained with a clarity appreciated by lawyers and non-lawyers alike in a broad international readership. While updating its core subjects of pollution from ships, wreck removal and dumping at sea, this enlarged text extends into other modern areas including pollution from offshore operations after Deepwater Horizon, plastics released into the sea, recycling of vessels, polar operations, and the fast-changing restrictions on carbon emissions from ships, as well as safety threats such as cyberattacks, terrorism and modern forms of piracy. With a highly readable introductory chapter amounting to a book within a book, this is a volume of great importance to all whose work or studies are concerned with marine environmental affairs, whether in government, international bodies, industry, technical organizations, the professions, environmental NGOs, the academic world or other walks of life.
