But this skirt chasing doesn’t come without quite a few problems. One problem is that both Mimi and Didina already have their steady sugar daddies in their lives. Another, bigger problem is that Didina’s steady man Jessop Panache is a violent man, who is now searching for Nick to... fix his wagon... And last, but not least, Mimi is a super-jealous lover and a revolutionary to boot, and has decided to pay Nick back for his infidelity by throwing a bottle of acid into his face. And on top of it all, the carnival is coming, and all the characters above will put on their masks and their costumes and dance the night away ... Will our romantic barber find a way out of this labyrinth of problems? Leave it to the great puppet master, Ion Luca Caragiale, to weave a head-spinning web of intrigue...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Darrell Gerohn Baksh, Jan de Cosmo, Frances Henry, Jeff Henry, Adanna Kai Jones, Samantha Noel, Dwaine Plaza, Philip W. Scher, and Asha St. Bernard Women are performing an ever-growing role in Caribbean Carnival. Through a feminist perspective, this volume examines the presence of women in contemporary Carnival by demonstrating not only their strength in numbers, but also the ways in which women participate in the event. While decried by traditionalists, the bikinis, beads, and feathers of “pretty mas’” convey both a newly found empowerment as a gendered resistance to oppression from men. Although research on Carnivals is substantial, especially in the Americas, the subject of women in Carnival as a topic of inquiry remains fairly new. These essays address anthropological and historical facets of women and their practices in the Trinidad Carnival, including an analysis of how women’s costuming and performance have changed over time. The modern costumes, which are well within the financial means of most mas’ players, demonstrate the new power of women who can now afford these outfits. In discussing the commodification and erotization of Carnival, the book emphasizes the unveiling of the female body and the hip-rolling sexual movements called winin or it. Through display of their bodies, contemporary women in Carnival express a form of female resistance. Intent on enjoying and expressing themselves, they seem invigorated by their place in the economy, as well as their sexuality, defying the moral controls imposed on them. Through an array of methods in qualitative research, including interviews, participant observation, and ethnography, this volume explains the new power of women in the evolution of Carnival mas’ in Trinidad amid the wider Caribbean diaspora.

But when the crowd thins and the promenade empties, a man is found dead at the center . . . Detective Littlejohn, who happens to be in town visiting a friend, now faces a perplexing case. In a small town that runs on gossip, nobody seems to know the victim. The waitress who identified him knew him only as ‘Uncle Fred.’ Who would want to murder an anonymous man? Book excerpt: "Teresa Lupo always envied her Aunt Sofia, whose adventurous life is in stark contrast to Teresa's by-the-book career as a police pathologist. But when Sofia vanishes in Venice on the eve of Carnival, thoughtful, methodical Teresa is the only person with a prayer of tracking her down. The only clues to Sofia's whereabouts are a mysterious letter, a bouquet of flowers, and a series of short stories by an unknown author, stories in which Sofia and Teresa inexplicably appear. The bizarre narratives form a complex puzzle that Teresa can solve only by immersing herself in the art and history of Venice and the fantastic spectacle of Carnival. But the deeper she ventures into the shadowy world behind the masks, the more Teresa comes to realize that in this enchanted, Byzantine city, nothing is what it seems."--P. [4] of cover.

Book excerpt: In this stunning work of historical fiction, the Booker Prize–nominated author of Jamrach’s Menagerie reimagines the incredible true story of Julia Pastrana, a woman branded a freak at birth. Although she was pronounced by the most eminent physician of the day to be “a true hybrid wherein the nature of woman presides over that of the brute,” Julia was fluent in English, French, and Spanish, and an accomplished musician with an exquisite singing voice. Alternately vilified and celebrated, all she wanted was for people to see beyond her hairy visage—and perhaps, the chance for love. When Julia meets a charming showman who catapults her onto the global stage, she believes that she has found true happiness at last. But the question of whether her lover truly cares for her—or if his management is just a new form of exploitation—lingers heavily. A deeply moving novel, in Orphans of the Carnival Carol Birch has crafted a haunting examination of how we define ourselves and, ultimately, of what it means to be human.
