Book excerpt: Winner of the Christopher Award and the New York City Book Award Winner of the 2016 Wheatley Book Award in Nonfiction A history of African Americans in New York City from the 1910s to 1960, told through the life of Samuel Battle, the New York Police Department’s first black officer. When Samuel Battle broke the color line as New York City’s first African American cop in the second decade of the twentieth century, he had to fear his racist colleagues as much as criminals. He had to be three times better than his white peers, and many times more resilient. His life was threatened. He was displayed like a circus animal. Yet, fearlessly claiming his rights, he prevailed in a four-decade odyssey that is both the story of one man’s courageous dedication to racial progress and a harbinger of the divisions between police and the people they serve that plague twenty-first-century America. By dint of brains, brawn, and an outsized personality, Battle rode the forward wave of African American history in New York. He circulated among renowned turn-of-the-century entertainers and writers. He weathered threatening hostility as a founding citizen of black Harlem. He served as “godfather” to the regiment of black soldiers that won glory in World War I as the “Hellfighters of Harlem.” He befriended sports stars like Joe Louis, Jesse Owens, and Sugar Ray Robinson, and he bonded with legendary tap dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. Along the way, he mentored an equally smart, equally tough young man in a still more brutal fight to integrate the New York Fire Department. At the close of his career, Battle looked back proudly on the against-all-odd journey taken by a man who came of age as the son of former slaves in the South. He had navigated the corruption of Tammany Hall, the treachery of gangsters like Lucky Luciano and Dutch Schultz, the anything-goes era of Prohibition, the devastation of the Depression, and the race riots that erupted in Harlem in the 1930s and 1940s. By then he was a trusted aide to Mayor Fiorello La Guardia and a friend to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Realizing that his story was the story of race in New York across the first half of the century, Battle commissioned a biography to be written by none other than Langston Hughes, the preeminent voice of the Harlem Renaissance. But their eighty-thousand-word collaboration failed to find a publisher, and has remained unpublished since. Using Hughes’s manuscript, which is quoted liberally throughout this book, as well as his own archival research and interviews with survivors, Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Arthur Browne has created an important and compelling social history of New York, revealed a fascinating episode in the life of Langston Hughes, and delivered the riveting life and times of a remarkable and unjustly forgotten man, setting Samuel Battle where he belongs in the pantheon of American civil rights pioneers.

Book excerpt: A profound exploration of how to hold on to hope when our unchanging faith collides with a changing culture, from two respected Christian storytellers and thought leaders. “Offers neither spin control nor image maintenance for the evangelical tribe, but genuine hope.”—Russell Moore, president of ERLC As the pressures of health warnings, economic turmoil, and partisan politics continue to rise, the influence of gospel-focused Christians seems to be waning. In the public square and popular opinion, we are losing our voice right when it’s needed most for Christ’s glory and the common good. But there’s another story unfolding too—if you know where to look. In Gospelbound, Collin Hansen and Sarah Eekhoff Zylstra counter these growing fears with a robust message of resolute hope for anyone hungry for good news. Join them in exploring profound stories of Christians who are quietly changing the world in the name of Jesus—from the wild world of digital media to the stories of ancient saints and unsung contemporary activists on the frontiers of justice and mercy. Discover how, in these dark times, the light of Jesus shines even brighter. You haven’t heard the whole story. And that’s good news.

But what actually happens in heaven? What are we going to be doing there? Won't it get boring at some point? According to Scripture, a large part of our experience of heaven will be a continual revealing of God's glory. Not just his glory in the moment, but during all of time. The mysteries of providence, the hidden movements of God throughout history, and the forgotten and unnoted works of even the most obscure of God's people will be unveiled so that we can see how wise, loving, gracious, and powerful our God is. And though we will experience perfection in heaven, we will never be omniscient, which means we will always be learning more about God's glory, inspiring us to return joyful praise and thanksgiving. If your vision of heaven has been limited to clouds and harps and angels, it's time to expand that view with the truth found in this biblically based look at the afterlife.

Book excerpt: Salinger Dolan. You know his name. You've seen his face. You've spent money on the endless amount of useless crap he endorses.Of course, you've heard the stories. You know the ones...The one that claimed he was hard to work with and totally unprofessional on set.The one where he got caught doing drugs on the set of the most popular, family-friendly show in America. The one where he ruined the reputation-and career-of America's sweetheart. There's more truth to those stories than his fans want to believe because Salinger is the kind of thoughtless, careless, dangerous Hollywood bad boy the paparazzi and fame-hungry starlets can't get enough of.Eventually, the shine of his flashy lifestyle started to fade, and Salinger realized the only thing he's famous for nowadays is his bad behavior and well-documented struggle with addiction. The former golden boy is beyond tarnished, and the only person who can help him get his glow back is the one woman who wants absolutely nothing to do with him.Maren Copeland. You might recall her name. It's possible you vaguely remember her face. You're probably wondering where she went. After all, you've heard the stories...The one where she exposed Salinger Dolan's drug use all those years ago.The one that said she tried to ruin his career because she was envious of his popularity. The one about how she went from being everyone's favorite to a pariah overnight.Maren Copeland is now known as the comeback queen. After years of hard work and purposely avoiding entanglements with problematic heartthrobs like her first co-star, she's on track to revitalize her career and rearrange her priorities after a very messy and very public divorce. For the first time in both her professional and personal life, she's the one calling all the shots.Unfortunately, the path to get her where she wants to be leads directly to none other than Salinger Dolan. He's the one and the only person she swore she would never work with again.Once upon a time, he cost her everything. He's back to make amends and promised to give her anything she wants if she'll just give him a chance to prove he's grown up.She doesn't trust him.She knows she'd be a fool to believe he's changed. After all, what are the odds that a spoiled, entitled brat like Salinger Dolan could become a righteous man?

Book excerpt: Inside the hidden world of Hasidic Jews in Brooklyn's Crown Heights--a close-knit but divided community. On a cold night in December, the members of a Hasidic anti-crime patrol called the Shomrim are summoned to a yeshiva dormitory in Crown Heights. There to break up a brawl, the Shomrim instead find themselves embroiled in a religious schism which has split the community and turned roommate against roommate, neighbor against neighbor. At the center of the storm is Aron Hershkop, the owner of an auto-repair business and the leader of the Shomrim. Hershkop watches as the NYPD builds a criminal case against his brothers and friends, apparently with the help of several local residents, who have taken the rare step of forgoing a ruling from the local rabbinical council. Soon, both sides are squaring off in a Brooklyn criminal court, with the Shomrim facing gang assault charges and decades in prison. What conflict could run so deep it left both sides airing their dirty laundry so publicly? This compelling story takes you to the deepest corners of a normally hidden world. Features fast-paced writing and a true story with surprising twists, personal conflicts, and a tense trial Offers a glimpse in a normally sheltered and private community many see, but few know much about. Centers on an unusual man facing a universal conflict: do you do what’s simple and expedient, or do you do follow our heart, your tradition, and your faith?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Righteous Men - Two Wicked Cities explores in depth the fascinating Bible account of Abraham and Lot, and Sodom and Gomorrah. This true story is not only an intriguing one, but a tale replete with lessons both timely and pertinent in today's America. Approach this volume with an open heart and mind, and you'll gain invaluable insights desperately needed in our lives, our families, our churches, and our nation. And perhaps like Queen Esther of old, you'll find that God has actually brought you to this time and place so that you can help make a real difference in your world! I don't believe I've ever come across a single book that was as Biblically sound and culturally relevant as "Two Righteous Men -- Two Wicked Cities." This book is clearly the product of decades of Bible Study as well as depth of insight into contemporary life in America. Sam demonstrates clearly how the lives of Abraham and Lot were recorded for us as examples of the workings of God in the lives of individuals, communities and a nation. He reminds us of our Godly heritage and points clearly to the way home for America. I highly recommend this book to every student of the Bible as well as every American concerned about the future of our nation. --Reverend Bill Banuchi Sr. Executive Director New York Faith & Freedom Coalition President, Marriage & Family Savers Institute "Two Righteous Men --Two Wicked Cities" is relevant to our day and worthy of our attention and discussion. I highly recommend it. It is my prayer for the Spirit of God to use this book to help open our eyes to our desperate need for spiritual revival and to give us wisdom to know how to restore righteousness to our nation. --Scott Darling President OneMillionPraying.org, Montana State Coordinator for National Day of Prayer
