Book excerpt: There's a world of adventure in Lucy's backyard, once she learns how to look at it. On a day without friends and activities, Lucy reluctantly heads to her backyard, where her curiosity takes hold and her vivid imagination is stoked. She discovers a busy world, makes some unexpected friends, and learns that Nature is anything but quiet. Lucy's Quiet Day, by Lisa Sirkis Thompson, author of Lucy's Mask, helps kids understand that alone time can be fun. In a hectic society, when kids are increasingly involved in programmed activities, it's important for them to learn that quiet days can be satisfying. And in a crisis like the pandemic, when quarantine suddenly forces quiet days on everyone, these skills are more important than ever. Unstructured time has been shown to help build resilience, creativity and confidence in kids, and helps them work through real world problems. Quiet days outdoors can help kids make connections with Nature. Lucy's Quiet Day is a story that parents, grandparents and teachers can use to gently bring this positive message to reading time.

But the sisters could not be more different. The school brings out a rivalry between them that few ever knew existed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 14 December 1911, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team became the first human beings to reach the South Pole, just over a month before Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition. He had already led the first expedition to traverse the North West Passage, and would go on to lead the first successful attempt to cross the Arctic by air (perhaps even becoming the first to reach the North Pole, according to some interpretations). Yet his personal life was messy to say the least, with a string of mistresses, including Eskimo girls he brought back to Norway, and a poisonous relationship with his brother. He disappeared in 1928 while taking part in an airborne rescue mission in the Arctic; his body was never found. Tor Bomann-Larsen's account of his life is the only full biography of Amundsen to be published in English.

Book excerpt: 2 Para's performance during Operation MARKET GARDEN is legendary but, as this book amply demonstrates, it was the culmination of three year's battle experience. A major factor behind the Battalion's successes was the leadership of its Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel John D Frost who never failed to inspire those under him by his example and character. Without Tradition is a superb record of, and a fitting tribute to, one of the most successful fighting units in the long and glorious history of the British Army.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of A Civil Action—this true story of a North Carolina outdoorsman who teams up with his Appalachian neighbors to save treasured land from being destroyed will “make you want to head for the mountains” (Raleigh News & Observer). LIVING ALONE IN HIS WOODED MOUNTAIN RETREAT, Jay Leutze gets a call from a whip-smart fourteen-year-old, Ashley Cook, and her aunt, Ollie Cox, who say a local mining company is intent on tearing down Belview Mountain, the towering peak above their house. Ashley and her family, who live in a little spot known locally as Dog Town, are “mountain people,” with a way of life and speech unique to their home high in the Appalachians. They suspect the mining company is violating North Carolina’s mining law, and they want Jay, a nonpracticing attorney, to stop the destruction of the mountain. Jay, a devoted naturalist and fisherman, quickly decides to join their cause. So begins the epic quest of “the Dog Town Bunch,” a battle that involves fiery public hearings, clandestine surveillance of the mine operator’s highly questionable activities, ferocious pressure on public officials, and high-stakes legal brinksmanship in the North Carolina court system. Jay helps assemble a talented group of environmental lawyers to contend with the well-funded attorneys protecting the mining company’s plan to dynamite Belview Mountain, which happens to sit next to the famous Appalachian Trail, the 2,184- mile national park that stretches from Maine to Georgia. As the mining company continues to level the forest and erect the gigantic crushing plant on the site, Jay’s group searches frantically for a way to stop an act of environmental desecration that will destroy a fragile wild place and mar the Appalachian Trail forever.

Book excerpt: Intelligent Christians not only lead lives of prayer, but also require an understanding of prayer. Too often we are told how to pray, but not why we pray. Too often we are asked to recite our creeds, but not to explore how they express our faith. This first American edition of Thornton's classic work provides inquisitive Christians with a map for an informed life of prayer. Drawing on the work of Macquarrie and Buber, Thornton illuminates the nature of the Trinity as the ground of our existence, and the eucharist as our ultimate form of prayer.

Book excerpt: Looking Up From The Bottom is the story of a family that was almost permanently torn apart by regrettable errors in judgement that set off a dismal chain of events. A three-person family can be likened to a tripod - the family members holding each other up. Remove one of the legs and that family can fall. Shirley Harper and daughter, Alice, had lost their husband and father unexpectedly, and struggled to remain upright without him. Gene Michaels was by all accounts "an okay guy" and was welcomed into the family as the new third member. He made errors in judgement that threatened to ruin the family tripod. It was almost too late when he realized the regrettable mistakes that he had made. Everyone has something that they have done in the past, that, if they could have that chance, they would ask for a do-over. Certainly, Gene Michaels made bad choices that he regretted very quickly. In the still of the night, he knew that he was at fault for the tears in the family fabric. Daughter Alice, too, had made mistakes. "Alice lay down on the bed, admitting to herself for the millionth time that she was lonely. She was sorry now that she came. She was sorry that she was so mean to her mother. Face it, Alice, she told herself. You're sorry for it all."

Book excerpt: This volume provides comprehensive and authoritative coverage of all the main areas linked to geomagnetic field observation, from instrumentation to methodology, on ground or near-Earth. Efforts are also focused on a 21st century e-Science approach to open access to all geomagnetic data, but also to the data preservation, data discovery, data rescue, and capacity building. Finally, modeling magnetic fields with different internal origins, with their variation in space and time, is an attempt to draw together into one place the traditional work in producing models as IGRF or describing the magnetic anomalies.

Book excerpt: Hull Rifles looks at the 4th East Yorkshire Regiment during the Great War and examines the origins of the battalion and its history over the three years it fought in France and Belgium. The battalion was involved in some of the bloodiest battles of the war and suffered such high casualty rates in early 1918 that the unit ceased to exist, except in name. The men of the original battalion were Territorials, part-time soldiers who gave their free time to provide home defense during a war. Officially formed on 1 April 1908 as a result of the Haldane changes, the unit could trace its history back hundreds of years and was one of the oldest in the country. All the men were volunteers and held a full-time job. They had committed themselves to regular weekly training and a camp in the summer where they practised large-scale manoeuvres with other units. When the call came to volunteer for overseas service, 80 per cent came forward. Their ranks were quickly filled with new volunteers who were prepared to fight abroad. Volunteer numbers were high and quickly the overseas battalion was at full strength, as was a second for home service. A third battalion was also formed to provide replacements for the men at the Front. As well as fighting on the Western Front, a battalion was sent to guard Bermuda for the duration. The text uses letters, newspaper cuttings and the war diary to provide a detailed picture of a typical Territorial battalion at war. Also included are many previously unseen photographs, a nominal list of the men who volunteered before Christmas 1915, including a convicted murderer, awards, casualty details and lists of officers.
