Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early nineteenth-century illustrations of Hartford, Connecticut, show church steeples towering over the Victorian homes and brownstone facades of businesses around them. The modern skyline of the town has lost many of these elegant steeples and their quaint and smaller neighbors. Banks have yielded to newer banks, and organizations like the YMCA are now parking lots. In the 1960s, Constitution Plaza replaced an entire neighborhood on Hartford's east side. The city has evolved in the name of progress, allowing treasured buildings to pass into history. Those buildings that survive have been repurposed--the Old State House, built in 1796, is one of the oldest and has found new life as a museum. Yet the memory of these bygone landmarks and scenes has not been lost. Historian Daniel Sterner recalls the lost face of downtown and preserves the historic landmarks that still remain with this nostalgic exploration of Hartford's structural evolution.

Book excerpt: While president of Aetna Life from 1879 to 1922, Morgan Bulkeley served four terms as mayor of Hartford, two terms as Connecticut’s governor, and one term as a United States senator. His friends and business and political acquaintances were a who’s who of the Gilded Age: Samuel Clemens, J. P. Morgan, Samuel and Elizabeth Colt, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, Albert Spalding, General Sherman, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Katherine Hepburn, as well as every president from Ulysses Grant to Warren Harding. In 1874 Bulkeley formed the Hartford Dark Blues who soon joined the unruly National Association, antecedent of the National League. He served as the league’s first president for a year, and was later elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. It was during Bulkeley’s controversial “holdover” term as governor that he earned the nickname “Crowbar Governor.” He used a crowbar to remove a lock that had been placed on his office door after refusing to vacate the governor’s chambers on a technicality. Written in classic storyteller fashion, and augmented by copious research, Crowbar Governor offers readers a privileged glimpse into life and politics in Connecticut during the Gilded Age. Ebook Edition Note: Eight images from the Connecticut Historical Society have been redacted.

Book excerpt: First published in 1919, this fascinating volume provides an overview of the history of the Aetna Insurance Company, beginning with their very first president and policy. A history of the Aetna Insurance Company is arguably a history of modern insurance itself, making this volume a must-read for those with an interest in the topic. Contents include: "Thomas K. Brace, First and Third President", "Section of Original Petition for Aetna Charter", "Original Entry in First Record Book", "Seal of Aetna Insurance Company", "First Aetna Advertisement", "Henry L. Ellsworth, Second President", "Page from Correspondence Book No. I", "Aetna Policy No. I" ,"Aetna Office Building, 1837 to 1867", etc. William George Jordan (1864 - 1928) was an American lecturer, editor, and essayist. He is most famous for his self-help books, especially those on the subject of mental training and cognitive improvement. Other notable works by this author include: "Mental Training" (1894), "The Kingship of Self-Control" (1898), and "The Majesty of Calmness" (1900). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial History of Hartford: Gathered From the Original Records, Illustrated The town of Hartford has passed the two hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of its settlement, and, in a few years, it will have completed three centuries of history. The early town that the founders knew has long since disappeared. Features that were familiar for generations have been swept away by the ravages of time. Only a few landmarks now remain. Within the area of what was formerly a country town, a large city has grown into vigorous life. To the sons and daughters of Hartford, the story of this development during colonial times, is of interest. It may also serve a patriotic purpose, by helping her citizens to maintain a fellowship with the forefathers, and by awakening in her children of foreign descent a loyal regard for her traditions. In the hope of rendering such a service to the city, for which the author confesses a strong personal affection, this volume has been written, in the course of a study of the records, extending over many years. Students of Connecticut records have occasionally acknowledged their doubt whether certain fundamental facts, which concern both our local history and the founding of the Colony, have been correctly conceived. Views have become current, and have been passed on from one authority to another, which appeal for their warrant largely to records that have been lost, and are not in harmony with those that are extant. Such is the opinion that three organized towns created the Commonwealth. The records prior to 1639 that have disappeared, were those of three plantations, which were constituted as such and bore the names of the three Massachusetts towns from which their inhabitants emigrated. We have, fortunately, the early records of Springfield, at first united with them, to disclose the nature of their government. Hartford, alone, has documentary evidence of any town organization before the Commonwealth was formally established. Students studying the American Revolutionary War learn primarily about battles and how independence from the British was achieved. In Voices of Revolutionary America: Contemporary Accounts of Daily Life, readers get the largely untold story of the American Revolution: the ongoing issues and details of life in the background, behind the battles. This book surveys the entirety of the Revolutionary era, describing topics like marriage, childbirth, learning a trade, cost of living, slavery, and religion in the late 18th century. While some documents from the 1760s and early 1770s are provided to present general information about life, the book focuses on the years of the war from 1775 to 1783 and describes how the prolonged conflict impacted people's day-to-day lives.
