Book excerpt: From a bestselling author and economist, a contemporary moral case for economic growth—and a dose of inspiration and optimism about our future possibilities. Growth is good. Through history, economic growth, in particular, has alleviated human misery, improved human happiness and opportunity, and lengthened human lives. Wealthier societies are more stable, offer better living standards, produce better medicines, and ensure greater autonomy, greater fulfillment, and more sources of fun. If we want to continue on our trends of growth, and the overwhelmingly positive outcomes for societies that come with it, every individual must become more concerned with the welfare of those around us. So, how do we proceed? Tyler Cowen, in a culmination of 20 years of thinking and research, provides a roadmap for moving forward. In this new book, Stubborn Attachments: A Vision for a Society of Free, Prosperous, and Responsible Individuals, Cowen argues that our reason and common sense can help free us of the faulty ideas that hold us back as people and as a society. Stubborn Attachments, at its heart, makes the contemporary moral case for economic growth and delivers a great dose of inspiration and optimism about our future possibilities. As a means of practicing the altruism that Stubborn Attachments argues for, Tyler Cowen is donating all earnings from this book to a man he met in Ethiopia earlier this year with aspirations to open his own travel business.

Book excerpt: The next financial collapse will resemble nothing in history. . . . Deciding upon the best course to follow will require comprehending a minefield of risks, while poised at a crossroads, pondering the death of the dollar. The U.S. dollar has been the global reserve currency since the end of World War II. If the dollar fails, the entire international monetary system will fail with it. But optimists have always said, in essence, that confidence in the dollar will never truly be shaken, no matter how high our national debt or how dysfunctional our government. In the last few years, however, the risks have become too big to ignore. While Washington is gridlocked, our biggest rivals—China, Russia, and the oil-producing nations of the Middle East—are doing everything possible to end U.S. monetary hegemony. The potential results: Financial warfare. Deflation. Hyperinflation. Market collapse. Chaos. James Rickards, the acclaimed author of Currency Wars, shows why money itself is now at risk and what we can all do to protect ourselves. He explains the power of converting unreliable investments into real wealth: gold, land, fine art, and other long-term stores of value.

Book excerpt: The cryptocurrency trend of the past few years has continued to grow despite widespread predictions that it would just be a flash in the pan. Blockchain is suddenly everyone's favorite buzzword. But what if there's more to this story than meets the eye? What if Digital Currency is about to change the world in ways beyond our imagination? And what if geopolitical forces our politicians don't even understand have already inspired China and Russia to use Digital Currency to attack the U.S. Dollar's dominance over the global financial system? The Dollar has served as the world's reserve currency since 1944, and the fringe benefits have allowed the U.S. Government to borrow and spend beyond its means and run massive trade deficits for decades. Now China and Russia suddenly have a new lever to use which could upset the global balance of power. Who would have guessed that technology breakthroughs conceived by the inventors of cryptocurrency would hand China and Russia just the weapon they needed to attack the Dollar's rule over the global economy? The invention of digital cash enables government-issued digital currency systems that could completely modernize the global monetary system. The potential benefits to society are so great that it's hard to grasp their full magnitude. But a digital currency system introduced by China and Russia could upstage the Dollar and replace it as global reserve currency, causing devastating consequences for the U.S. economy. Which country wins the new digital currency Space Race could change the course of human history. There's plenty of evidence that China and Russia are already hard at work. The Chinese central bank is aggressively hiring Blockchain engineers, but has been suspiciously quiet about what they're working on. Sergei Glaziev, economic advisor to Russian President Vladimir Putin is giving keynote speeches to Blockchain conferences. The Chinese central bank filed more digital currency patents than anyone else in 2017. This book explains why China and Russia are suddenly so interested in Digital Currency technology, and more importantly, what they plan to do with it. Time is short for the U.S. Government to wake up and recognize the threat that now looms over the U.S. Dollar's dominance at the center of the global financial system, and why Digital Currency technology is likely to be the challengers' weapon of choice to defeat the Dollar.Author Erik Townsend is uniquely qualified to sort this puzzle out and tell the entire fascinating story. In his first career, Townsend was a distributed systems architect - an expert in all the technologies used to create cryptocurrencies. In his second career, he was a hedge fund manager who studied reserve currency status extensively. Townsend first gives readers an introduction to both conventional money and digital currency, then gives a detailed introduction to relevant monetary history subjects, and finally ties it all together and explains how a state-sponsored digital currency system could steal the title of global reserve currency from the U.S. Dollar and change the balance of world power.

Book excerpt: Johnstone Justice. What America Needs Now. In this exciting new series, bestselling authors William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone pay homage to America’s trail-hardened backwoodsmen who, like a fine grain whiskey, only get better with age . . . REAL MEN DON’T RIDE INTO THE SUNSET In his mountain-man days, Elwood “Firestick” McQueen was practically a living legend. His hunting, tracking, and trapping skills were known far and wide. But it was his deadly accuracy with a rifle that earned him the Indian name “Firestick.” His two best buddies are Malachi “Beartooth” Skinner—whose knife was as fatal as a grizzly’s chompers—and Jim “Moosejaw” Hendricks, who once wielded the jawbone of a moose to crush his enemies in the heat of battle. Of course, things are different nowadays. The trio have finally settled down, running a horse ranch in West Texas—and spending quality time with their lady friends. But if you think these old boys are ready for lives of leisure, think again . . . Firestick is the town marshal. Beartooth and Moosejaw are his deputies. And when a hired gunman shows up with bullets blazing, these three hard-cases are ready to prove they aren’t getting older. They’re getting deadlier . . . Live Free. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis G. Clarke, born into slavery, was separated from his Scottish father and quadroon mother at the age of six in Madison County, Kentucky. the atrocities he suffered and witnessed under his new masters were abominable and way beyond what most slaves endured during slavery. After escaping from bondage, Clarke then traveled to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and became a primary spokesman for the abolitionist movement throughout the Northeast and Canada during the 1840s and 1850s. While in Cambridge, he lived in the home of Aaron and Mary Safford where he met many times with Harriet Beecher Stowe, Mary's stepsister, as well as many other luminaries of the abolitionist movement. the rebellious quadroon slave George Harris of Mrs. Stowe's book Uncle Tom's Cabin was identified by her as based significantly upon the life of Clarke. When the Civil War ended, Clarke continued to be in demand as a speaker, nationally, on behalf of former slaves. Clarke's notoriety and influence was such that when he died in Lexington, Kentucky, that his passing was noted in newspapers throughout the world with full-page eulogies. If there was a common thread in Lewis's life, it related to striving to have the kind of family life that he never experienced as a child; however, during his lifetime, the vicissitudes of race and color lines in America made his vision not only challenging but ephemeral.
