Book Synopsis Dissident Practices by : Claudia Calirman
Download or read book Dissident Practices written by Claudia Calirman and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dissident Practices, Claudia Calirman examines sixty years of visual art by prominent and emerging Brazilian women artists from the 1960s to the present, covering the period from the military dictatorship to the return to democracy in the mid-1980s, the social changes of the 2000s, the rise of the Right in the late-2010s, and the recent development of an overtly feminist art practice. Though they were lauded as key figures in Brazilian art, these artists still faced adversity and constraints because of their gender. Although many of them in the 1960s and 1970s disavowed the term feminism, Calirman gives a nuanced account of how they responded to authoritarianism, engaged with trauma in the aftermath of the military dictatorship, interrogated social gender norms, and fought against women’s objectification. By battling social inequalities, structures of power, and state violence, these artists create political agency in a society in which women remain targets of brutality and discrimination.

Book Synopsis The São Paulo Neo-Avant-Garde by : Mari Rodríguez Binnie
Download or read book The São Paulo Neo-Avant-Garde written by Mari Rodríguez Binnie and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2024-09-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, in the wake of the installation of Brazil's military dictatorship, artists and art collectives in Brazil used their work to critique the government and its sanitized images of Brazil, its use of torture, and its targeted persecutions. Mari Rodríguez Binnie's The São Paulo Neo-Avant Garde studies this art and its engagement with politics and mainstream institutions and traditions. During this period São Paulo was home to a growing number of high-rise office buildings, and many of the artists studied here held day jobs that gave them after-hours access to new technologies of mass production that became foundational to their work. As the author writes, "By appropriating processes such as photocopy, offset lithography, and thermal and heliographic printing, these artists simultaneously challenged the hidebound institutions of São Paulo's art world, as well as the regime's own manipulation of mass media through censorship and propaganda. The artists did so through works that, in their radical content and form, hinged on establishing alternative networks of communication both at the local and international levels." The study moves forward chronologically and thematically, with each chapter examining a particular set of works in their broader contexts"--
Book Synopsis Daniel Senise : vai, que nós levamos as partes que te faltam by : Daniel Senise
Download or read book Daniel Senise : vai, que nós levamos as partes que te faltam written by Daniel Senise and published by Pinacoteca Do Estado de Saao Paulo. This book was released on 2010 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book/exhibition catalogue registers in a generous manner Daniel Senise's (b. Brazil 1955) art production for the last 15 years, his creative process and documents a series of panoramic exhibitions about this group held in four Brazilian museums between 2008 and 2009, but with different configurations in every exhibition space. The photographs show an articulation of paintings in the place they were presented, which confers them something of an installation, creating spaces over spaces, and allowing a better understanding of Senise's complex artwork. The book accounts for nearly 30 years of the artist's career in an illustrated and ordered chronologically.
